That in itself suffices as a raison d'etre for this important project, which deserves - and is likely to attract - a wide readership. About the Author
Jaswant Singh (born 3 January 1938) is an Indian politician. He is from the Indian State of Rajasthan and was an officer in the Indian Army in the 1960s. He served as Finance minister in the short-lived government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which lasted just from 16 May 1996, to 1 June 1996. After Vajpayee became Prime Minister again two years later, he became Minister for External Affairs of India, serving from 5 Dec. 1958 until 1 July 2002. Responsible for the foreign policy, he dealt with high tensions between India and Pakistan. In July 2002, he became Finance Minister again, switching posts with Yashwant Sinha. He served as Finance Minister until the defeat of the Vajpayee government in May 2004 and was instrumental in defining and pushing through the market-friendly reforms of the government. Known for his moderate political views, he is a self-described liberal democrat even though the Bharatiya Janata Party is often described as a right-wing nationalist organization. He was conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for the year 2001. On 19 August 2009, he was expelled from BJP after criticism over his remarks in this book.

Intellectually Dishonest

Secular Hindus feel very good about themselves when one of them comes out and defends Muslims or the Muslims' point of view (by the way, the same is true of secular Muslims). This is exactly the sentiment that Jaswant Singh has tapped by publishing this book. The re-writing of history to present a Fox news-like version of a "fair and balanced" view will not change the underlying facts.
Presenting Jinnah as one voice of reason that Nehru and Gandhi did not accommodate is a false premise to start with. Jinnah and the Muslim League were NOT at par with Gandhi and the other freedom fighters of Indian National Congress for very legitimate reasons. Muslim League wanted a bite of the independence dividend that so many in the Congress had worked so hard and sacrificed so much to achieve. On this thorny issue where getting an unbiased view is so difficult, one voice of reason that is not questioned by Indian Hindus or Pakistani Muslims is that of Maulana Azad (who was one of the pillars of the foundation of secular India). The following excerpt from Maulana Azad's book states things the way they were.
"Pakistan was the creation of Muslim League. Naturally the Muslim League party became dominant power in the new state. I have already described how Muslim League was originally founded to oppose the Congress. The League therefore had hardly any members who had fought for the independence of the country. They had neither made any sacrifice nor gone through the discipline of a struggle. They were either retired officials or men who had been brought into public life under British patronage. The result was that when the new state was formed, power came into the hands of people who had no record of service or sacrifice. Many of the rulers of the new state were selfish people who had come into public life only for the sake of personal interest."

Pakistan was created on the premise that Muslim rights (and later Islamic values) will be compromised in secular India and secular Jinnah became the champion of Islam. Jinnah was to the Islamic interests as Clarence Thomas is to the African Americans in the U.S. Supreme Court. An alcohol drinking, chain smoker (who died of tuberculosis) Jinnah was a westerner at heart and selfish in actions. Thrown out of Indian National Congress (with no support even from his secular Muslim fellows) over a decade ago, he took his bitter revenge by joining the Muslim League and creating a nation to get even. I know lots of Pakistanis will find this deeply offensive, but it is very hard to ignore the facts.
Though not on Jinnah, I would recommend Maulana Azad's book to get a fair and balanced view of the national environment and the characters surrounding the partition.
