Essential Reading

By the Numbers (BTN) is a text every CrossFit coach should have. As a coach, the essence of what you do is teach movement. BTN outlines guiding principles of how to view and develop movement on the macro level. It then provides a concrete method to teach exercises through a series of idealized poses to athletes, fix movement errors and make your gym move better. This method works in a 1:1 setting or a class of 20. In a complex group setting with many ability levels, it allows you to coach day 1 athletes and 5 year PR'N veterans together, maintaining cohesiveness. This isn't another book outlining points of performance, it is a book about coaching CrossFit.
Sean's Movement Hierarchy allows everybody in the gym to get on the same page, coaches and athletes. Our On-Ramp Program is based off its progressions, the book gives me a central text for new coaches to study (instead of teaching it repeatedly). New day 1 athletes are exposed to the same drills and cues they will encounter in class, giving them consistency and repetition. Sean's Movement Hierarchy allows coaches to scale workouts consistently, based on the client's ability level, instead of just reducing the weight. You will find the best scale for the overhead squat, is not a light crappy overhead squat with PVC. For athletes, the hierarchy clearly outlines how to progress, answering the question how do I get from where I am to where I want to go. Athletes that make progress and remain uninjured, are long term clients.

Required Reading for the CrossFit Coach

By The Numbers is a long overdue in the CrossFit community. Sean has compiled teaching methods and progressions and placed them into one place. Many veteran coaches have often discussed the need for such a book as this. This is the teaching operations manual for the affiliate. The book should be required reading for anyone who wants to be a CrossFit coach. Quality of coaching has been a large bogey man for the 11+ years I have been coaching CrossFit. One of the main reasons quality teaching methods have not been codified. Quality is often referenced as an amorphous concepts without definition. Here is a definition. Many of the progressions and concepts used in By The Numbers are what I have used to develop my athletes and teams who have qualified for the CrossFit Games. (40+ athletes and six teams)
By The Numbers is an indispensable tool to develop coaches.

An absolute must read for anyone who coaches CrossFit!

By the Numbers (BTN) is an essential text for all those who coach CrossFit and also for athletes who want to get better at doing CrossFit. Being able to take someone who has never set foot in a gym before and effectively teach them how to move safely and effectively is a skill that is not developed overnight. Anyone can yell encouragement at their athletes and call themselves a "coach", but in the end being able to communicate clearly and get a new athlete moving in the correct manner takes skill. BTN provides a method that is repeatable and just works. No matter whether the class consists of 20 people or just 1, the methods shown in BTN work. If you are considering becoming a CrossFit coach then this book is the first thing you should reach for. Your level 1 cert is just the beginning and you need to learn repeatable, consistent ways of teaching movement. If you are already a CrossFit coach then this book is an absolute must for your professional library and you will no doubt reach for it again and again.
