About the Author
Joel Samaha is University Distinguished Teaching Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. He received his B.A. (History), J.D., and Ph.D. (History) from Northwestern University and studied under Sir Geoffrey Elton at Cambridge University, England. Professor Samaha was admitted to the Illinois Bar, briefly practiced law in Chicago, and then taught at UCLA. In 1971, he joined the University of Minnesota, where he served as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Studies for four years, taught television and radio courses in criminal justice, co-taught a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar in legal and constitutional history, was named College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Teacher in 1974, and named University Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2007. Professor Samaha's works have appeared in Historical Journal, American Journal of Legal History, Minnesota Law Review, William Mitchell Law Review, and Journal of Social History.

Essential Reading

By the Numbers (BTN) is a text every CrossFit coach should have. As a coach, the essence of what you do is teach movement. BTN outlines guiding principles of how to view and develop movement on the macro level. It then provides a concrete method to teach exercises through a series of idealized poses to athletes, fix movement errors and make your gym move better. This method works in a 1:1 setting or a class of 20. In a complex group setting with many ability levels, it allows you to coach day 1 athletes and 5 year PR'N veterans together, maintaining cohesiveness. This isn't another book outlining points of performance, it is a book about coaching CrossFit.

Sean's Movement Hierarchy allows everybody in the gym to get on the same page, coaches and athletes. Our On-Ramp Program is based off its progressions, the book gives me a central text for new coaches to study (instead of teaching it repeatedly). New day 1 athletes are exposed to the same drills and cues they will encounter in class, giving them consistency and repetition. Sean's Movement Hierarchy allows coaches to scale workouts consistently, based on the client's ability level, instead of just reducing the weight. You will find the best scale for the overhead squat, is not a light crappy overhead squat with PVC. For athletes, the hierarchy clearly outlines how to progress, answering the question how do I get from where I am to where I want to go. Athletes that make progress and remain uninjured, are long term clients.

Required Reading for the CrossFit Coach

By The Numbers is a long overdue in the CrossFit community. Sean has compiled teaching methods and progressions and placed them into one place. Many veteran coaches have often discussed the need for such a book as this. This is the teaching operations manual for the affiliate. The book should be required reading for anyone who wants to be a CrossFit coach. Quality of coaching has been a large bogey man for the 11+ years I have been coaching CrossFit. One of the main reasons quality teaching methods have not been codified. Quality is often referenced as an amorphous concepts without definition. Here is a definition. Many of the progressions and concepts used in By The Numbers are what I have used to develop my athletes and teams who have qualified for the CrossFit Games. (40+ athletes and six teams)

By The Numbers is an indispensable tool to develop coaches.

An absolute must read for anyone who coaches CrossFit!

By the Numbers (BTN) is an essential text for all those who coach CrossFit and also for athletes who want to get better at doing CrossFit. Being able to take someone who has never set foot in a gym before and effectively teach them how to move safely and effectively is a skill that is not developed overnight. Anyone can yell encouragement at their athletes and call themselves a "coach", but in the end being able to communicate clearly and get a new athlete moving in the correct manner takes skill. BTN provides a method that is repeatable and just works. No matter whether the class consists of 20 people or just 1, the methods shown in BTN work. If you are considering becoming a CrossFit coach then this book is the first thing you should reach for. Your level 1 cert is just the beginning and you need to learn repeatable, consistent ways of teaching movement. If you are already a CrossFit coach then this book is an absolute must for your professional library and you will no doubt reach for it again and again.

A children's classic

My youngest sister was born in 1965, and I remember when she got this for her fourth birthday. She and I both had many children's books as youngsters, and this is the one that both of us remember best. I would read to her and show her the pictures, and it would hold her interest even at that young age. She would laugh with delight at the antics of all of the animals in the book, particularly "Babykins", a particularly ill behaved kitten sitting in a high chair and throwing its food around with a spoon when nobody was looking. When my sister was grown and had her own children, this is the book that she would mention as wanting a copy of to give to them. I highly recommend it. Besides having a method that works at holding children's interest, you just don't see craftsmanship in illustrations like this anymore.

Over 2,500 words with 1000 pictures! We want a reprint!

Richard Scarry books are delightful and teach children about life and language. This particular book is one of the most interesting ways to teach children over 2,500 words.

On the inside cover all the animals introduce themselves. There are cats, mice, pigs, bears, chickens and just about every animal you can think of. These entertaining animals appear on various pages and help to tell the story of words.

The words are organized according to the alphabet just as in an adult dictionary. Most of the words are used in a sentence and they all have illustrations. Some of the items are combined into one large picture. When "Ali Cat" is coloring on one page, each crayon and the color is displayed on the page. The words: colors, colored, coloring are also typed next to the original word "color." In this way you can use all the words in sentences to teach your children even more word usage.

Yes, there are plenty of silly things to make children laugh. I found the artwork very amusing in some places. There are so many pictures, you cannot possibly see everything in one, two, or even three readings. This is a book your child will enjoy for years. I would like to see a reprint of this classic children's dictionary.

Richard Scarry's Stroybook Dictionary

This is a wonderful book for children to pour through on their own, or read to them, (one letter at a time), for learning letters, we read about the letter we've been working on that day. For increasing their vocabulary, and understanding of vocabulary, it's been invaluable. The pictures are there for the more visual learner, and for the younger ages. When you read a word, it will show all forms of the word, plus use them in sentences. The sentences and pictures are humorous, using situations we encounter every day, or feel grateful that we haven't. I think it also helps with learning to deal with difficult situations that we encounter too.

Protecting the one you love!

This is the second book in the Trident Security series and although it isn't necessary to read book one first I do highly recommend it.

Ian Sawyer is the boss of Trident Security and the Master Dom at The Covenant, an exclusive BDSM club co-owned by him, his brother Devon and cousin Mitch. He was engaged to Kaliope Levine 10 years ago and since she broke up with him he has sworn off all long-term relationships with women.

Angelina Beckett is a graphic designer who has just moved in next door to Brody Evans. James Athos will do everything to make sure that Angelina is safe, including finding out who her neighbors are and that leads him to Trident Security. When James decides to take one more undercover mission he knows he must count on the men of Trident Security to keep Angie safe.

Yet as Ian gets to know Angie he is captivated by her and wants her in every way possible. When a disaster strikes and Angie learns the truth about all of the relationships around her will she be able to move on from the hurt and the secrets? Will Ian and James be able to protect the girl they both love?

I enjoyed this book but found some of a little repetitive in regards to the BDSM club. That being said if you hadn't read the first book it would be important information.

Again I was surprised at how willing Angie was to Ian's lifestyle and how fast she jumped into. But as I have never been propositioned by a former Navy Seal I can't say I wouldn't do the same. I found it interesting how Ian stuck to the rules so explicitly even though he was the owner with him explaining that he had to adhere to the rules exactly like everyone else.

I loved when everything went sideways and how Brody was right there to protect Angie. The level of security and preparedness was awesome and I think these guys are definitely prepared for anything! I also loved how Angie went crazy when she discovered all the secrets that were kept from her by Ian. It was so awesome how she put him in his place!

Ian is definitely another pure Alpha male! He is so DOM yet I can see that he is so caring although he is scared to get his heart broken again. I'm glad he was able to figure everything out!

I am really enjoying all the characters and as each book goes along I am definitely loving the men of Trident Security!!

BDSM at its best!

His Angel is the story of Angelina (aka Angie or Angel) and Ian. Angie is a woman who has a hard time dating. She feels like something is missing from her relationships both emotionally and sexually. Ian has a particular type of lifestyle. He has been burned in the past by a woman and refuses to let any other woman get close to him again. When Ians co-worker and friend moves next door to Angie, Ian is immediately attracted to her and finds himself visiting his friend more often in hopes of seeing her. Angie has noticed Ian and is attracted to him as well, but thinks that there is no way he would ever be interested in her.
Ian works for a security agency. When he gets a job to protect Angie at all costs, he spends more time watching her. After a blind date of hers falls through, Ian asks her out, which starts their romantic relationship. Not long after they start dating, Angie finds out about Ians BDSM lifestyle. While she is a little freaked, she is more intrigued and allows Ian to introduce her to the lifestyle. Hot sex scenes and emotions proceed, while Angie and Ian find themselves falling deeper than either had imagined.
I enjoyed this story, but at the same time I felt that it needed to be blended more. I understand that the characters needed to fall in love and have their getting to know you stage, but I feel that the mystery (aka Angie is in danger) was lost while we were watching them fall in love. I kind of felt like it was two different stories in a way. In the beginning we are introduced to the idea that Angie might be in trouble, but then it is put on the back burner for a majority of the book. After Ian and Angie become close, the danger aspect is used as a way to bring a climax to the story. I think that worked fine except I would have liked to see some clue that she was going to be in danger before the climax of the book. That is just me personally though.
Ian and Angies relationship was a good one. I liked how he introduced her to the BDSM lifestyle and how she struggled a little, but eventually was able to acclimate. With that being said, I think she was a little bit too accepting at first. I felt like they moved things a long quicker than I think it should have. Angie never thought a BDSM lifestyle was real until she found out about Ian. She was told by a random woman she had never met in a bathroom, which I figured she would freak out a bit more at this point. I understand her intrigue, but I guess I figured she might have been a little more reluctant at first. She even jumped right in that same night and asked Ian to introduce her to the lifestyle. I think that someone being so new would have wanted to go slow to make sure that it was what she really wanted. After asking some questions, I think that I would have liked to see her without a night or two while she thought about the information discussed. The actual BDSM portion of the book I found to be interesting. The explanation of the BDSM club and the patrons was told in a way that I could imagine it.
With that being said, I really did enjoy this book and learning about Ian and his lifestyle. I think that Angie and Ian progressed their relationship a little fast, but it was still a good relationship. I loved how Ian kept denying his love for Angie, but when he thought he lost her, he was forced to deal with the fact that he was indeed in love with her. Angie admitted she loved Ian to herself quicker than Ian, but I think she knew she would fall for him from the beginning. I would recommend this book to my friends and would enjoy reading other books by this author.

I can not thank Ms Cole enough, because I have fallen firmly in love with the men of Trident Security and awaiting the next book in the series with baited breath ! I fell in love with Devon" devil dog" Sawyer in Leather and Lace and it has been no different with his brother Ian in this book. Though each book can be read as an independent story I would strongly urge you to read them in order .
Some quick background the men of Trident Security are former Navy Seals, the Sawyer brothers also happen to own an elite BDSM club too. Devon finds his soulmate and submissive in "Leathe and Lace" and now in His Angel it is his brother Ian's turn.
Ian Sawyer is the former leader of the sal team four but even a strong dominant like him has his weakness and his was his former fianc� Kaliope , she broke his heart and left him firmly in the mind set that he will never allow himself to love again and be hurt again. Ian may not be open to a lifelong love but , meeting Boomers new neighbor Angie he finds himself very attracted to her and thinking of her often . However, seeing her sitting I. Her back patio with another man who she is obviously intimate with , shoots down the fantasies he has been having of her on her knees in front of him and the chance that just maybe she might be accepting if his lifestyle.
A new day brings new possibilities when their new client turns out to be Jimmy Athos Them an Ian presumed to be Angie's boyfriend , whitens out to be a dead agent under cover and he is hiring trident to keep Angie safes hike he is under cover,the last man on this job was found dead with his family , for Jimmy , Angie may be his best freind but she is also like family, they only have each other since both lost their families years ago; so her safety is priority .
Boomer uses his friendship to talk her into installing a new alarm system and while they are doing that they add a few extra items such as hidden cameras and trackers , just in case and to be able to protect her more efficiently. Without her knowledge .
Days later Ian swings buy to pick up papers at boomers and can not resist. Looking out his back sliding doors and when he catches a glimpse of Angie , he finally gives into his desires and asks out the beautiful submissive , yes submissive she may not know it But he sure as hell does.
Before Ian is ready to tell Angie he is a dominant and a Master at his own BDSM club he is outed and luckily Angie is not scared off, it gets hot and sexy soon enough , while things feel like they're going well soon enough trouble comes knocking. At Angie's door and Trident Security goes into full protection mode.
The suspense and intrigue move the book along quickly as well as the hot D/s scenes , I will say that even though this book has an HEA , their was one scene were I cried right along with Angie!

I can not express enough how great this series has been so far And I have purposely chosen to limit this review not to give away to much story line !
