Not much progression from Book 1
By Sarah
NOTE: Spoiler alert!
I read the first book, which I loved and was excited to find out how the story progresses. So I immediately got book 2 of the series, ready and eager to delve into the excitement. Oh how underwhelmed I was! While I have to say that the premise of the story in its entirety is intriguing, I found book 2 to be a true disappointment.
It's almost as long as book 1, and takes over immediately where book 1 ends, but for the progress it makes to the ongoing saga, it probably should have been 1/4 of it's current length. There's too much repetition with little headway. For instance, in the entire book we are told about Claire's indecision regarding her feelings for Farron. Just when it seems as though she finally accepts how she feels, we're jerked back to indecisive ground when Bren shows up unexpectedly. It seemed as though she was done with Bren after finding out he tried to kill her repeatedly. What possible reason could she still have to be hang up on him? Certainly none is given in the book.
There's also the fact that for all the training she's been doing since book 1, she's still gotten nowhere in mastering either her power or her fighting skills. This probably wouldn't be too bad if each chapter in this book didn't refer to her training in one way or another. What is she learning?
Whereas in book 1 each new concept introduced seemed to have a good reason, in book 2 we get new twists that are neither explained nor do they help advance the story. It feels as though they're just page fillers. It almost seems as though book 2 is a page holder for what's coming next - I can only hope book 3 will be more in keeping with book 1. I would almost suggest waiting for book 3 and skipping this one, but book 3 isn't out yet so it's impossible to determine how the story will flow.

spineless bumbling heroine finally shows a little spirit but it is too late - everybody loses
By Robert Shuler
I got depressed when reading this, about 2/3rd of the way through, because the heroine does the same stupid things over and over and over and over and . . . well you get it, learning nothing. She never talks about a problem with the person it affects, but just makes some snap judgement on her on or worse - under the influence of an enemy - and does things she knows won't work out that will make her and the other person miserable. Over and over she does it. I cannot imagine having dinner with the author and remaining civil. I feel like I'd get slapped, stabbed, and fed an order of shrimp to which I'm violently allergic. The heroine criticizes these traits in others.
All through the first two books, she is resentful of a magic mark which in fact would give her the power to stop the centaur attacks which ruined her home, and solve most other problems in her life. She makes little attempt to learn to use it, and cannot stand any unpleasant sensations or anything. Finally, after I started skimming it got a little better. I guess that makes the action faster. She even, after running away half a dozen times and just finding nowhere to hide, manages to run up and stab a monster and help win a fight (which she was previously leaving all up to her friend). But in the end she does something pitifully stupid that her boyfriend has told her not to ever, ever do and explained in detail the reasons why. She says she does it for him but obviously he does not want it. She even traps him into doing it. That's where the book ends. I will not be reading the sequel.
On reflection, I think the heroine reminds me of extremely dysfunctional girlfriends I had maybe ten years ago but long since outgrew. This is not what I read escapist literature for. I want to be inspired to believe people can be more competent than what I am used to, not less, and can grow and learn. Most of this genre involves the development of the hero or heroine. Perhaps the author just had an idea for a short story and padded it?

angry, upset and disappointed
By Amazon Customer
Warning: may contain spoilers.
I was so upset by this book. I couldnt wait to read it as the first one had been so good. However, I was really let down.
There was hardly any story progression, shes at the castle most of the book, and is content to stay there.
She is so flippen annoying and indecisive about her feelings for Farren. oh lets just sleep with him but you dont know if you love him.
I think the most disappointing thing for me in this book was Claire. She is so weak and timid in thia book!!! Arrgh. The way she complies with everything and doesnt stand up for herself! She even actually considers the idea of becoming the kings mistress. She has no bloody backbone in this book and its really irritating because its such a change from the first book.
I could rant on and on, but I will say this, I will be thinking very carefully about buying the third book. So let down...
