As America entered the postwar 1950s a resurgence by the auto manufacturers enabled them to create the most eccentric and extravagant automobiles of all time. Fierce competition between designers from General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and independents such as Packard all turned to one car builder nestled firmly in America's bustling automotive mecca to help design the most elaborate prototype and concept cars ever: Creative Industries of Detroit.
Author Leon Dixon's comprehensive account chronicles the greatest automotive achievements constructed at Creative Industries of Detroit. The careers of the company's founder, Fred Johnson, and his successor, Rex Terry, are examined to show how two former Chrysler employees led the most diverse automotive firm in all of Detroit. Dream cars created and examined in great detail include the Ford Atmos-FX, Mercury XM-800, Dodge Granada, Packard Balboa, Packard Panthers, Packard Request, Ford Mystere, Corvette Corvair, Dodge Daytona, Plymouth Superbird, Delorean, and many more. An amazing amount of hardware was constructed, each make separate from the other, and with a high level of secrecy.
Creative Industries of Detroit: The Untold Story of Detroit's Secret Concept Car Builder offers the most exhaustive and complete account of the 40-plus-year history creating dream, prototype, concept, and one-off cars from Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1950 Presidential Lincoln Limousine to the 1993 Mustang Mach III concept cars. This all-inclusive book is the first-ever on the subject, and features behind-the-scenes images and interviews never published before.

thus the author can offer only his best guess or speculation on what really transpired
By David W. Temple
This is a book I pre-ordered many months ago and anxiously waited for its release. It was worth the wait. Leon Dixon has written an authoritative book on a subject that only he could have researched and written. His decades of involvement in the auto industry and curiosity about concept cars over the same time period have combined to give the reader as close to an insider's perspective as is possible to provide today. The files of Creative Industries have long been discarded, so even just a magazine article on the subject would have been impressive enough. Instead, the author has put together a book filled with extensive details. Unfortunately, with the passage of time there are mysteries which will likely linger until the end of time, thus the author can offer only his best guess or speculation on what really transpired. In other cases, there is great detail presented. For those who are fascinated by concept cars, this is a must-have book. The only complaints (and I will not knock a star off for these since these issues involve the publisher's constraints rather than a failure of the author) are the fact it is soft cover rather than hard cover and wish that whatever landed on the cutting room floor (there are ALWAYS cuts) could have made it into the book - in other words the subject matter deserved more pages for more photos and more information. I particularly enjoyed the sections detailing the Packard Panthers and Mopar concepts like the Chrysler Typhoon, Dodge Charger I and Charger II, and the Plymouth XP-VIP as well as coverage of Ford's Mystere.

Great History of a Little-Known Company That Built Cars You Have Never Seen
By George Holmes
Do you like cars? Ever see a concept car and think "Oh, wow that's neat"? Do you have an appreciation for mid 20th Century American history? Do you like a well-presented story with amazing never-before-seen pictures? Then you are going to really enjoy this book.
There is a ton of information here, and the author presents it in a story form which is never boring and always enlightening.
After reading the book quickly I am now going to go back and study every page. There is that much to learn here. The photographs are fantastic. This book will be on my side table by my reading chair for a long time.

Those dream cars we all admired
By Robert Zimmerman
This is an excellent book with information long time coming. As an official 'Car Nut" and a Packard historian I found information here that filled in a lot of gaps in my Packard researching. But, there is much more to this book then just Packard. He talks of 'Dream Cars' from Ford, Chrysler, GM, AMC and others, plus the people who designed and built them.A fascinating read.
I had a friend who owned a 1954 Packard Panther Show Car several years back and through this book I finally found that he had Panther No.1 of the 4 built. As soon s I heard about this book, I bought it without a second thought.
