En La balada de los Vlsungs se relata la historia del gran heroe Sigurd, el cazador del mas celebre de los dragones, Fafnir, de cuyo tesoro se apodero; del despertar de la valquiria Brynhild, que dormia rodeada por un muro de fuego, y de sus esponsales; y de su llegada a la corte de los grandes principes a quienes llamaban los niflungs (o nibelungos), de quienes se convirtio en hermano de sangre. En esta corte nacio un gran amor, pero tambien un gran odio, alimentado por el poder de la hechicera, madre de los nibelungos, iniciada en las artes de la magia, de las transformaciones y de las pociones de olvido. «En escenas de dramatica intensidad, de confusion de identidades, pasiones frustradas, celos y amargas luchas, la tragedia de Sigurd y Brynhild, del nibelungo Gunnar y su hermana Gudrun, se hace mas intensa hasta su final con la muerte de Sigurd a manos de sus hermanos de sangre, el suicio de Brynhild, y la desesperacion de Gudrun. En La balada de Gudrun se relata su destino tras la muerte de Sigurd, su matrimonio en contra de su voluntad con el poderoso Atli, soberano de los hunos (el Atila historico), el asesinato de este a manos de los hermanos nibelungos de Gudrun, y la espantosa venganza que esta lleva a cabo.
