One of the most original psychoanalysts after Freud, Karen Horney pioneered such now familiar concepts as alienation, self-realization, and the idealized image, and she brought to psychoanalysis a new understanding of the importance of culture and environment.

Karen Horney was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1885 and studied at the University of Berlin, receiving her medical degree in 1913. From 1914 to 1918 she studied psychiatry at Berlin-Lankwitz, Germany, and from 1918 to 1932 taught at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. She participated in many international congresses, among them the historic discussion of lay analysis, chaired by Sigmund Freud.

Dr. Horney came to the United States in 1932 and for two years was Associate Director of the Psychoanalytic Institute, Chicago. In 1934 she came to New York and was a member of the teaching staff of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute until 1941, when she became one of the founders of the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and the American Institute for Psychoanalysis.

In Neurosis and Human Growth, Dr. Horney discusses the neurotic process as a special form of the human development, the antithesis of healthy growth. She unfolds the different stages of this situation, describing neurotic claims, the tyranny or inner dictates and the neurotic's solutions for relieving the tensions of conflict in such emotional attitudes as domination, self-effacement, dependency, or resignation. Throughout, she outlines with penetrating insight the forces that work for and against the person's realization of his or her potentialities.

This 40th Anniversary Edition includes a new preface by Stephanie Steinfeld, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Rubin, M.D., of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis.

in school they did not talk about Karen as one of the top psychological thinkers but if you read this book you will find that she is amazingly intelligent and has a very analytical mind with great perceptions and Revelation in the area of overcoming mental illness

This book is, I believe, one of the most insightful investigations into human psychology ever written. I will write a few points on why I hold this to be the case:
1. The author does not locate the origins of psychological conflict in the sexual arena, but focuses intensely on self-esteem.
2. It focuses on disruptive trends that any given individual may have within themselves rather than making excessive use of modern labels: e.g. the focus is on the trend to self-deprecate rather than on having `personality-disorder X'. This allows the reader to examine themselves with a greater sense of flexibility rather than strait-jacket themselves too tightly with the diagnosis of a certain kind of illness.
3. This book is written well; the reader could read this book in a coffee shop and does not need a previous knowledge of psychoanalytic theory in order to gain something from this book.
4. This book is practical and theoretical at the same time. Horney goes deep enough into the structure of mental health problems in order to illuminate, but does not get bogged down in theoretical debate.
I therefore recommend this book to anyone interested in an improvement in mental health and general well-being; reading this book will be much more rewarding than staying on the surface level with popular self-help books.

I can't give a better recommendation than that

For my commentary on this book, I'll reference the tags that Amazon asks you to choose between for the plot, mood, pace, and characters. Patrick O'Brian's work, and 'Master and Commander' in particular, is not served well by these kinds of choices. There are surprising plot elements, and ones that are foreshadowed long in advance. There are parts of the book that are light-hearted and hopeful, and parts that are very dark. The pace is slow as a walk on the island of Mahon, and fast as the seconds on the deck of an enemy ship.

In other words, O'Brian writes life. I can't give a better recommendation than that. Nailing him down as a sea-story guy or a history guy is a mistake. He writes friendships and hatred, hope and fear, and all the reasons and ways that we suffer and rejoice in little events and big. Read it.

Painfully accurate to the point of boredom

I am a very big fan of historical fiction Bernard Cornwell is my favorite author I was hoping in O'Brian's series to find a similar storyteller

In my opinion that is not the case I would not doubt that this book is very accurate but to me it's boring as well .

A ponderous, very detailed and extremely accurate account of how sailors in the Royal Navy lived the 1800s. If you are expecting the action and adventure that was present in the movie based on this book it will take a while to get to that .

Personally I could not get that far into the book it is a slow read I'm sure it will reward those that will delve into it and thus I did not give it a terrible review but a so-so one . It's just my opinion others make very much enjoy this .

ought to be clearly defined as an abridged edition

As others mentioned, I had previously read the printed version and was terribly disappointed in finding missing material, especially the brain surgery that exemplifies the doctor's genius. When kindle came out with an update I was so hoping that the commissions had been rectified. Unfortunately they have not. This kindle edition ought to be clearly marked as ABRIDGED. I would very much like my money back Amazon. Shame on you for your sloppy work.

Get Ready To Bake!

Please don't skip over this book because of the title; this is a wonderful book about making challah. The recipes start with the classics and then move to the more innovative. I've never read about the concept of "tunnels of filling" which are an easy and innovative way to make challahs move flavorful and even more special. You won't regret the purchase.

Reference book

If you are interested in improving your trading skills, this is NOT the book for you.
If you are interested in general background information about the world of FOREX, then you may buy this book.
The book is split into 6 parts. Part one and two, which corresponds to 40% of the book, reads like an encyclopaedia, where the book covers mostly background knowledge of FOREX related instruments and legislature.
Then it spends another 40 pages (part 3) bashing brokers.
I am sure there is quite a number of unethical brokers out there, but the decent ones exist and they are not hard to find if you spend some time doing your due diligence.
The picture the author paints about brokers makes you want to give up on trading forex and start something else.
I am not disregarding the author's experiences with brokers; I just think the book would be better if he cut that short and instructed his readers on how to research for good brokers.

The title of the book has two parts: scams and tricks to profit.
The profit part corresponds to part 4 and 5. What should be the most interesting part of the book (at least from my perspective), it is under 80 pages long.

I find the author delves deeply into the scams part and is shallow when it comes to teaching you how to profit.

Summarising: if you are interested in general background information, go ahead, buy the book. But if you are interested in technical (actionable) information that also takes into account brokers' business models, I find "Beat the Forex Dealer" by Agustin Silvani much better.

Interesting and useful

The Forex edge did cover a lot of ground discussing the Forex market. The author covered the basics of Forex and there was a thorough discussion of possible issues with brokers. Personally I think that a lot of the issues have been fixed with bad brokers due to the somewhat recent market regulation. The take away from this book should be to be ever vigilant of problems caused by the brokers who might be less than scrupulous, regardless of what instrument you're trading, there is after all a lot of money in the trading game.

What I liked most was how he approached showing us some basic mechanical systems, the EA/Robot discussion and also that he talks about Forex Options trading which it seems many other authors don't even talk about. Usually you hear just about trading the spot market without thought to Options, specifically as a method to hedge your trades.

If you are profitable and very experienced you will not need to read this book. If you are not yet profitable and or break even than this book can help you. And if your brand new to Forex this book could be really good (or another book my the Dicks) place to start, just don't get scared with the broker scam section.

It was OK. The author did some good research on the technical side of his trading examples, however, there is a lot of Opinion in this book.

This book is good, but not great and not worth the 30 I paid for it. I use MT4 with large and small accounts and have had trouble from time to time, but nothing like he is stating. I also use 3 brokers. No problems. I hear a lot of the same theories out there from traders that are losing trades and what not, as trying to pass blame on the failed trades to the broker, not their lack of skill. He needs to understand that there actually are technical issues with these brokers as prices are moving and moving very fast. If you trade at news time, expect to be misquoted or have slippage, this happens to EVERYONE and it is a reality, not a conspiracy against the author. And no, I dont work for any broker.

I would not suggest this book to any new traders, only to traders that are looking for research on the various Broker Scams out there.

Literacy for the 21st Century: A Balanced Approach (5th Edition)

This is a fantastic book. It is written well and has great applications for teaching literacy in the classroom. This is a book that I will keep for a resource in the years to come because of how valuable the information is as well as all of the additional resources provided within it. However, the website is not as helpful as I hoped. When I originally purchased the book from Amazon, the internet code was not included by the publisher to access the website. When I called the publisher to ask them about it, they were not helpful at all. Amazon did help me out so now I do have access. So, the book is great, the publisher was not helpful, and the website is not one that I have been impressed with to this point.
