About the Author
Dr. Prabir Basu, founding President of Greenfield Research Incorporated, a private research and development company in Canada that specializes in gasification and torrefaction, is an active researcher and designer of biomass energy conversion systems. Dr. Basu holds a position of Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department and is Head of Circulating Fluidized Bed Laboratory at Dalhousie University, Halifax His current research interests include frontier areas, chemical looping gasification, torrefaction, biomass cofiring amongst others.

Professor Basu also founded of the prestigious triennial International Conference series on Circulating Fluidized Beds, and a private R&D company, Fluidized Bed Systems Limited that specializes on design, training and investigative services on fluidized bed boilers.

Professor Basu has been working in the field of energy conversion and the environment for more than 30 years. Prior to joining the engineering faculty at Dalhousie University (formerly known as the Technical University of Nova Scotia), he worked with both a government research laboratory and a boiler manufacturing company.

Dr. Basu’s passion for the transformation of research results into industrial practice is well known, as is his ongoing commitment to spreading advanced knowledge around the world. He has authored more than 200 research papers and seven monographs in emerging areas of energy and environment, some of which have been translated into Chinese and Korean. He is well known internationally for providing expert advices on circulating fluidized bed boilers and conducting training courses to industries and universities across the globe.

Very good book as a primer to such technologies and fundamentals of biomass characterization and handling.

You may get disappointed if you are looking for detailed technical-economical information for feasibility studies, but clearly it is not the advertised proposal of the book anyway.

Easy reading, comprehensive to anyone with good 'high school level' technical/scientific background.

"You don't begin with meaning," according to fiction writer Rick DeMarinis, "you end with it." A critic approaching a story from a mythological standpoint might find a mythological theme, but "there are as many themes in a story as there are critical theories." Hogwash, says James N. Frey. "Mythic structures, forms, motifs, and characters ... are 'The Key' to writing more-powerful fiction," and it is a fiction writer's job to imbue his or her work with them. In The Key, Frey describes each of the mythic qualities (ascribed to the mythic hero, the "Evil One," the "Call to Adventure," and the other elements of the mythic journey) and offers examples of how to use them in one's writing. Don't get the wrong idea. Frey is not interested in academic or overly intellectual writing. Sure, he invents a Proust-reading Nevada cowboy to illustrate the concept of "The Hero's Lover," but there are more references here to James Bond than to Homer. Frey advises using first-person journal writing to get to know one's characters. He emphasizes fiction's need for conflict at every turn. And he recommends working from a premise, as it helps one know what to leave out (everything in the story must work to further the premise). This is interesting. Frey has broken down several successful plots (movie and book) and found a similar pattern -- not just of climax and denouement, but of theme and character. He bases the archetypal Western "story" on ancient myths (they do compare pretty well) and recommends how to go about writing your own story based on this framework. Its simplicity and broad-based appeal would seem most applicable to pop-genre fiction and movies (even non-genre movies). Literary, it is not -- nor postmodern nor poetry. (It could be epic poetry.) But it's definitely the map of the skeleton of some of the most popular and satisfying stories.

All of James N. Frey's books are excellent. And entertaining. This one covers novel writing from the requirements and characteristics of the quest, a format that seems to fit most of the novels written today, either loosely or quite closely.

There are other books on this subject, including Joseph Campbell's works and Christopher Vogler's The Writer's Journey. There are important differences in Frey's book. It is written by a fiction writer for fiction writers. It is a quicker read and an easy one. And Frey shows us how to actually build a novel, using the power of myth. And he does this right in his book. So you get explanations but also enlightening examples constantly.

Some feel that we need Campbell and Vogler for an indepth treatment of myth. Phooey. We don't need to become myth scholars. What those of us need to know is the characteristics of quest fiction so that when we wish we can use them in the building of our fiction. The Key provides plenty of that.

Whether building the Parthenon or the pyramids, the ancients created with a wisdom that often astonishes us. So it is with the power of myth. Get this book and learn what you need to know.

DAMN GOOD ADVICE FOR WRITERS

Go to just about any writing workshop, and you'll hear advice to employ the "power of myth." All this is really means is to use ageless storytelling techniques. But unlike a lot of instructors, Frey gives excellent advice on HOW to do just that.
Frey understands that plot arises out of character, and so he focuses on the character interaction, and the use of archetypal - mythic -- patterns for development. Throughout the book, he offers many examples from well-known sources, enabling the reader to see the commonalities between very diverse characters and stories.
Another bonus of this book is the illustration of the techniques described in Frey's other works. We see how character bios aid the writing in understanding the character - even if much of that bio never shows up in the novel or screenplay. The journals "written" by the characters demonstrate the importance of getting inside the heads of characters, a method that aids the writer to understand the character's motivation. I particularly appreciate the advice to use this method will all important characters, not just protaoonists. Villains and secondary characters require the writer's understanding, too.
While in many respects, the underlying information here is not very different from that provided by Swain, McKee or Vogler, (but then, how could it not be similar? - all concern story structure) Frey's explanation is more accessible. Being a writing book junkie, I'd say buy `em all. But if you can only get one about story - this is probably the one to get.

IT MAY BE SHORT, BUT SIZE DOESN'T MATTER!

The book is only 85 pages long (if you take out the Appendices and filler material). That alone gets it four out of five stars. Well... not really... but there's a lot to be said for producing a book that will actually get read. You can read the whole thing in one bathroom sitting, assuming you just returned from Mexico. By comparison, similar books like "Pro PHP Security" by Chris Snyder and Michael Southwell (also a very good book) are more along the lines of 500 pages and such books are intended as comprehensive reference books rather than tutorials. You'd have to eat at a restaurant in North Korea to get all the way through the Pro PHP Security book. Seriously though - the criticisms of this book primarily pretain to its lack of detail - but I'd rather actually finish a high level book than have a detailed book sit on my shelf unread.

Chris' book is great. It's chocked full of easy to understand explanations and little five line code fragments to demonstrate what he's explaining. Sure enough, if you read the whole thing, you'll understand the essentials of PHP Security. Hey - perhaps that explains the title?

Do I need this book if my company already uses web scanning security software? Yes - you won't understand the problems that those products identify if you don't understand PHP security basics. If you don't understand reported errors, You'll be tempted to ignore or suppress warnings that you don't understand. Chris' book will give you the knowledge that you need in a few easy to follow pages.

There are a few ommissions. They include:

OMISSION #1: The book should mention somewhere that many of the security vulnerabilities it describes are not unique to PHP - especially big ones like cross-site scripting and SQL injection. While PHP has some vulnerabilities that other languages do not (and vis-versa), Java, C#, Ruby, and all the other server-side languages can also be attacked with cross-site scripting, SQL injection, session spoofing, cookie theft, backdoor URLs, etc., etc.

OMISSION #2: The book would have benefited from the addition of a page of system administration best practices to improve security rather than confining itself only to coding best practices. For example, it's easy for developers to accidentally open security holes by making very small changes to the PHP.ini file. A good best practice is to use the operating system to restrict access to that file in the production environment. Or it would have good to see Chris distill role-based security administration policies, logging, or remote procedure call policies down to just the most important principles. He has a knack for filtering out the noise, and if he had added that additional 86th page, I swear I would have read it too.

OMISSION #3: It's worth mentioning how modular design has a very big impact on the number of vulnerabilities inside an application. This is especially important for PHP, because PHP code is often a little more haphazard than code written in other languages - primarily because of the culture that surrounds PHP but also for a few other reasons (we cover those reasons in the PHP Chapter of our own book on the strengths and weaknesses of various technologies).

Bottom line:

These criticisms are very minor. The book is short, easy-to-read, and filled with information that is absolutely essential to know if you are to responsibly deploy a server-side PHP application. Look at the table of contents. If you're not familiar with those terms, you'd better get the book.

Good for non-php too

I'm not a PHP developer but found this book useful for other languages besides PHP. A lot of the security topics it covers are pretty general and apply to most languages/frameworks. It's pretty easy to distill the general concepts and take them with you elsewhere. Plus they're pretty worthwhile, important security tips.

Okay for Novices

As far as technical books go, I liked this one. It really does get right to the point, and doesn't waste any time. But I do want to warn potential buyers that the book doesn't contain anything new to those who've been around the block a couple times. I'd say this book would only be informative to novice PHP programmers.

I've been programming with PHP for a few years now, and even when I read a book aimed at novices I usually learn something, or I'm at least reminded of some issues that I hadn't thought about in a while. I can't say the same about this book. I read it front to back within an hour, and didn't learn anything new, nor will it provide any kind of reference for future projects.

Overall I was disappointed, but that isn't necessarily the author's fault. I was just expecting something more in-depth.

I bought this book to learn about Excel options and learned more than enough. Other reviews said macros did not work, but they worked great for me. Must be user error. The forecasting was a little difficult to understand but once I actually tried it worked. There were some items that I may never use, but I never knew Excel could do that. Great Book, wish others explained this well.

Not a bad book for your bookshelf.

The Excel 2010 Financials Cookbook is good place to start for beginners. The basics are all covered and there is definitely an emphasis on financial functions inside of Excel. However, I was disappointed that a lot of time was spent on grouping the coverage of PivotTables was pretty light. The financial analysts that I know, eat, sleep, breathe and think in PivotTable. Plus, they are infinitely more usable than groups. Also, there was no coverage of Sparklines. Bottom, line, this isn't a bad book to have on your bookshelf.

I've received this book as a gift and I think it's awesome. Maybe it got bad reviews from experienced users but what I read so far it is really helpful for beginners; it helped me to achieve better results and now I can work more efficiently and faster; it comes with tons of examples and pictures.

This book is not interesting to read nor was it helpful in our instructor's class as she rarely used the book. In the beginning of the class, I did read through chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4, and completed notes as well as flash cards for study. I quickly learned that our tests and quizzes in class had very little to do with the material in this book. Again, this book is boring. The excerpts and examples throughout the book were distracting, equally boring, and unhelpful. I bought the ebook. Near the end of our semester I began using the search tool often to search keywords for any questions I had. That was likely the only benefit about my purchase. However, I do feel that my online searches were actually more helpful, more detailed, and undeniably more interesting than from the book. I cannot say this book will last long in my library following this class as a reference.

I'm still glad I bought it

I bought this for my Nursing Research course because it was a required textbook. This shipped to my house really quickly, and came in the exact condition as described. Although my professor didn't really require us to read this for the course, I'm still glad I bought it. It was a good price, and I still ended up reading it for supplemental information. It makes concepts really clear and is very easy to read.
