Welcome to the strange and wonderful world of Hong Kong horror movies, filled to bursting with flying ghosts, hopping vampires, seductive spirits, tree demons, evil sorcerers, living skeletons, possessed limbs and giant predatory tongues. Tsui Hark’s A Chinese Ghost Story in 1987 gave many Western viewers their first taste of supernatural thrills — Oriental style — yet the film was a comparatively late entry in a well-established genre. From Sammo Hung’s ground-breaking Spooky Encounters to King Hu’s valedictory Painted Skin, the 1980s Hong Kong ghost film cycle produced a stylish and distinctive body of work that compares with the best of Universal and Hammer. According to the standard version of events, Hong Kong cinema during the late 1970s amounted to little more than a series of tired Bruce Lee rip-offs. The posthumous release of Game of Death, which blended unused Lee footage with unconvincing ‘doubles’, merely underlined the film industry’s creative bankruptcy. Like most established movie lore, this bleak scenario doesn’t tell the full story by any means. For example, veteran stuntman, fight choreographer and supporting actor Sammo Hung had recently emerged as both a major star and a gifted, imaginative director. While most of his early work followed the standard formula of righteous kung fu vengeance, Hung was clearly a film-maker to watch. On the lookout for new material, Sammo Hung decided to blend supernatural elements with the usual high-impact martial arts and broad humour. The end result, Spooky Encounters, or Encounter of the Spooky Kind, proved a runaway success, creating a new genre: the kung fu ghost comedy. Around the same time, Hong Kong’s thriving television industry produced such notable ‘New Wave’ talents as Ann Hui and Tsui Hark, who’d both make major contributions to the ghost movie cycle. Leading action directors John Woo, Ronny Yu and Ringo Lam all worked on horror films early in their careers. Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun Fat romanced witches, fought demons and blew up monsters before he ever donned dark glasses and a trenchcoat. Five years on from Spooky Encounters, Sammo Hung produced Mr Vampire, arguably his greatest contribution to the genre. Along with Tsui Hark’s A Chinese Ghost Story, another major hit, Mr Vampire’s far-reaching success kept the spooky movie alive until the early 1990s. While the Hong Kong film industry still turns out horror movies on a regular basis, the great days of the ghost genre are long gone. Shifting audience tastes, industry crises, creative exhaustion and a talent exodus to the United States all played a part in this decline. The genre rarely attracts major film-makers now, mostly operating at the extreme low budget end of the industry. The Troublesome Night series, which currently stands at eighteen entries, is more notable for its survival in the face of meagre box-office returns than for the intrinsic quality of the films. On the bright side, the critical and commercial success of Ann Hui’s Visible Secret and the Pang Brothers’ The Eye suggests that the Hong Kong ghost genre may become fashionable again.

No Dreadful Melody here!

Somehow Daniel O'Brien's book Spooky Encounters came out without me noticing. I picked this book up a few weeks back and just couldn't put it down. O'Brien gives the most comprehensive history of Hong Kong horror films during the Golden Age of HK filmmaking (roughly the '70s through 1997) I've had the pleasure of reading since the second issue of Colin Geddes's groundbreaking zine Asian Eye.

At 180 pages, Spooky Encounter is jam-packed with information, reviews, and comparisons of HK Horror. O'Brien breaks topics down into the history of HK Horror, the Mr. Vampire series, the influential films of Tsui Hark, Category III blends of sex and scares, and the last days of HK Horror films in the wake of the '97 takeover. O'Brien ties the popularity of films back to their native HK box office gross which provides an interesting insight on how these films were received at the time compared to their legacy (or lack thereof).

O'Brien's prose makes the book easy to read. Moreover, his writing is clear and concise which helps to make sense of some of the more obtuse film plots and the use of Eastern legends in others. O'Brien doesn't take the easy road of gushing over the food films and demonizing the poor ones. His tone is even-handed though he doesn't shy away from taking some laugh out loud potshots when necessary. One of my favorite lines comes from his review of JULY 13TH / QI YUE SHI SAN ZHI LONG PO he writes, "While Alan and Laura appear to be back together, the enigmatic ending hints that their happiness will be short-lived. It also suggests that Wellson Chin and Abe Kwon didn't know how to end their film."

Highly informative and well-crafted, Spooky Encounters is a must-read for genre fans and cinephiles interested in an under-appreciated movement of cinema.

About the Author
Terces Engelhart has been preparing and serving flavorful food and delicious meals since her childhood. She is interested in the healing power of food to help people who suffer from diet-based diseases, as she did. Engelhart and her husband, Matthew, opened the first location of their popular Caf� Gratitude 2004 in San Francisco, California. They have opened a second restaurant in San Francisco as well ones in Berkeley, Marin, and Los Angeles. The caf�s, which support local farmers, sustainable agriculture, and environmentally friendly products, serve living, organic food made with the freshest ingredients possible.The Engelharts published The Abounding River Logbook as well as The Abounding River board game, both of which focus on their practice of being in abundance. In addition, they lead monthly workshops on this topic and are often asked to be guests on radio and TV shows. The Engelharts live with two of their five children in San Francisco. Orchid (Richard Slayen) has studied food and cooking in such exotic places as Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Central America, and Mexico. This Is the Gourmet Answer to Raw Foods

One of the hardest things for me to adjust to when paring down my intake of food is the adjustment of making any kind of elaborate gourmet style meal if I need to, to making something out of almost no ingredients and not even be able to COOK IT!

When I switched to primarily raw foods, my family was on the verge of Mutiny. I tried RAW IN TEN MINUTES which at first was okay, but I have a good imagination. All of the recipes started to taste the same and my family went from eating everything on their plates to making excuses to avoid dinner and eat in their rooms (stashed organic corn chips etc).

When I saw I AM GRATEFUL, I figured it might be another blonger of a book, but I decided to try it anyway. It was someone's birthday the week I got it, so I decided to make a raw dessert (strawberry shortcake) and then a baked cake for everyone else.

I never made it to the cake. Everyone went berserk over the raw strawberry shortcake.

I have made about 1/2 of the recipes in this book so far and I can say OMG it is truly FANTASTIC. Our favorites are: Marinated Veggies, Falafels, Fiery Carrot Avocado Soup, Coconut Curry Soup (Thai), Thai green papaya salad , Coconut Lime Dressing, Jalapeno mint chutney, Smokey Mole (OMG that is the BEST RECIPE EVER), Marinara with Brazil nut Parmesan cheese, Pad Thai,pecan porridge, Cinnamon Rolls, Strawberry Shortcake (with raspberries is DIVINE), German Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Apple Cobbler, and Lemon Meringue Pie.

We don't eat desserts that often, or we would have ripped through the entire dessert section.

Preparation is about that of any meal- it is not too involved on some recipes- but others, take overnight food dryer time and have to be planned accordingly.

However, I find that it works out fine in some cases to do an overnight. I am really in love with the recipes in this book. They taste AMAZING and Gourmet in quality, yet they have simple ingredients in some cases. I substitute ingredients I don't have until I can get what I need quite often.

I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is like Moosewood used to be to vegetarians years ago........

A Delicious Introduction to Gourmet Raw Vegan Cuisine

I was given this book as a gift, and I in turn, made a gift of this book to a friend, who like myself, is vegan.

One of the challenges that we vegans have is to prepare nutritious meals that are also delicious, so I am always looking for new ways to enhance the food I prepare. I enjoyed "I AM Grateful" and found several recipes that I could make right away with the tools I have in my kitchen. I especially enjoyed the "nut cheese" recipes.

There are three things I noted that make me rate it less than a five.

(1) To prepare many of the dishes, one must have a food processor and a dehydrator. I have neither, so I find that making many of the recipes is not currently possible for me.

(2) There is a lot of added sugars and fat in this cuisine, and not a lot of protein. It relies heavily on nuts and coconut (which have a lot of fat) and agave syrup for many recipes. I think for special meals and celebrations, this cuisine is ideal and delicious. But as I have begun to monitor my intake of fat and sugar, I don't see that I could eat this food all the time.

(3) It could get quite expensive to eat this way for those who are on a fixed or low income. For example, to make a quart of hemp seed milk using their recipe would cost about $17.00 to $18.00, as the recipe calls for two cups (one pound) of organic hemp seeds. Ditto for almond, hazel nut, and other nut milks.

The book is well written, informative, thought-provoking (Terces inserts coaching questions on almost every page), nicely-illustrated, and the recipes I have made have been consistently delicious. Overall, it is a wonderful book for your vegan friends.

Best. Tiramisu. Ever.

Well honestly I bought this just because I ate at the cafe and the tiramisu was for sure the best I've ever had... and it's raw vegan! (Which is not to say it's low-calorie... but it is delicious and doesn't give me a dairy hangover. In fact, It's like the best energy bar ever--it really does pick you up and keep you going.) Anyhow, back to the book--I've only made the tiramisu so far-- a bit time (and ingredient) consuming but worth it. Made a week's worth of tiramisu for 2 (I probably should have shared...). The irish moss (which many have written about in their reviews) was new to me, but I bought some on Amazon and it worked out just fine using the directions provided in the book-- just wash well, soak, and then puree well--no need to cook but you do need a good powerful blender. I did find I needed to tweak some ratios-- specifically add the coffee to the almond flour (rather than pour over in a later step as directed) to make it moist enough to mix with the date paste; added some extra water too. I also don't know if the 30 oz of almond flour was dry or fluid oz-- I would assume dry but that just seemed like wayy too much-- so i used about 2/3 of that and it came out tasty.
Other tips-- they say let it chill in the fridge/freezer for an hour between adding layers-- you need way more time than that (at least in the fridge, which is what i did. It was a wildly different (and tastier) cake the next morning once it had had time to set properly. And lastly, the whipped cream portion of the recipe makes a TON of whipped cream. I barely used 1/3 of it (which was reassuring since it's not exactly health food...) --I've been adding the remainder to smoothies. Yum

About the Author

David Myers received his psychology Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has spent his career at Hope College, Michigan, where he has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections. Hope College students have invited him to be their commencement speaker and voted him "outstanding professor."

His research and writings have been recognized by the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize, by a 2010 Honored Scientist award from the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences, by a 2010 Award for Service on Behalf of Personality and Social Psychology, by a 2013 Presidential Citation from APA Division 2, and by three�honorary doctorates.

With support from National Science Foundation grants, Myers' scientific articles have appeared in three dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Science, and the American Psychologist. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks for introductory and social psychology, he also digests psychological science for the general public. His writings have appeared in four dozen magazines, from Today's Education to Scientific American. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

David Myers has chaired his city's Human Relations Commission, helped found a thriving assistance center for families in poverty, and spoken to hundreds of college and community groups. Drawing on his experience, he also has written articles and a book (A Quiet World) about hearing loss, and he is advocating a transformation in American assistive listening technology (see www.hearingloop.org). For his leadership, he received an American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award in 2011, and the Hearing Loss Association of America Walter T. Ridder Award in 2012.

He bikes to work year-round and plays daily pick-up basketball. David and Carol Myers have raised two sons and a daughter, and have one granddaughter to whom he dedicates the Third Edition of Psychology in Everyday Life.

C. Nathan DeWall is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Social Psychology Lab at the University of Kentucky. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Olaf College, a Master’s Degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago, and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Florida State University. DeWall received the 2011 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award, which recognizes excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. In 2011, the Association for Psychological Science identified DeWall as a “Rising Star” for “making significant contributions to the field of psychological science.”�DeWall conducts research on close relationships, self-control, and aggression. With funding from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, he has published over 120 scientific articles and chapters. DeWall’s research awards include the SAGE Young Scholars award from the Foundation for Personality and Social Psychology, the Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Research on Aggression, and the Early Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity. His research has been covered by numerous media outlets, including Good Morning America, Newsweek, Atlantic Monthly, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Harvard Business Review, and National Public Radio. DeWall blogs for Psychology Today. He has lectured nationally and internationally, including in Hong Kong, China, the Netherlands, England, Greece, Hungary, and Australia.�Nathan is happily married to Alice DeWall. He enjoys playing with his two golden retrievers, Finnegan and Atticus. In his spare time, he writes novels, watches sports, and runs and runs and runs—including in 2013 a half marathon, two marathons, two 50-mile ultramarathons, and one 100-mile ultramarathon.

In this book Javier Corrales argues instead that the key struggle is between the executive and the ruling party. Deep economic transformations require cooperation from the ruling party. This support allows the state to sustain societal support and simultaneously ward off the potentially paralyzing influence of interest groups. Without such cooperation, the executive loses credibility and the political fortitude necessary to neutralize the opposition from skeptical as well as cost-bearing sectors of society.

Presidents Without Parties puts this argument to the test by examining closely what happened in Argentina and Venezuela during the 1990s. Similarly situated when they embarked on economic reform in 1989, Argentina experienced success, with the reformers reelected in 1995, whereas Venezuela saw its reformers�’ efforts fail, leading to a prolonged crisis. Corrales shows precisely how the executive�’s relationship with the ruling party shaped the different outcomes in the two countries.
