Well worth the money

I'm a fan of several of the authors in this anthology: Garth Nix, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Rothfuss, and George RR Martin. I've been waiting for as long as Patrick Rothfuss told his fans that he had a story about Bast.

That's what I read first. It was beautifully done, and it was a perfect story about Bast. I am now content to wait for his novella on Auri and the Underthing The Slow Regard of Silent Things coming out this fall.

I read George RR Martin's story about the older Targaryens. It was good, and it was more hasty than his novels. That meant that it moved at a practically breakneck speed for him, and it was easier to keep track of than his deep games. I liked it a lot.

I then read Garth Nix's nonsense stories about godlets, and it was charming and adorable ESPECIALLY because there's a tiny elephant named Rosie who is a major character. Somehow, he sets up an entire world in a brief space. Lovely. It was a good story before his recent release of Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen.

The last that I read (of course I'm going to read the entirety of the anthology now that I've seen the quality) was Neil Gaiman's on the Marquis de Carabas. It tells you almost nothing, but it pulled me back into the world of Neverwhere: A Novel. It was nice.

This book is well worth the money.

Cost me $120, with no regrets.

I bought the book for the Scott Lynch (Lies of Loch Lamora) story, which was wonderful, but the other stories introduced me to a whole slew of characters whose authors write of scams, misdirection, and "not everything seems as it appears". Most stories slant towards the science fiction/fantasy side, but not all: there are rogues everywhere. I ended up buying the first book of perhaps a dozen series based on the creativity in the short stories. Turned out to be an expensive purchase (for the irony impaired: not for the book itself but for the followup purchases) that has added to my "to be read" pile immensely. Which is I guess why authors put their stories in collections like this. A great introduction to a wide range of creative authors and interesting characters.

Passion yes, clarity ?

First, read Robert Morris' thorough 5-star review to get an overview of this book's contents.

The author's frustration at not being able to persuade New Orleans' leaders of the risks of a hurricane inspired this book. I appreciate the passion. However, I came away confused, feeling that perhaps the passion was driving his writing faster than he could evaluate what actually reached the page; that perhaps there were more thoughts behind the words than were actually communicated by the ink on the paper.

Points:
p7: "Innovate differently, and win, or continue to innovate narrowly, and lose." Has Werbach not read The Innovator's Dilemma? "Innovating differently" is an enormous challenge to established companies and isn't going to be solved by exhortation.

p. 20: "Nature obsesses over protecting its young." No, only for some vertebrates. Not for oysters, or pine trees, or any of the bazillion R-strategist species, which have better survival profiles in unstable environments than the K-strategists that invest heavily in gestation and nuturing babies.

p. 20: "Integrate metrics. Nature brings the right information to the right place at the right time. When a tree needs water, the leaves curl." Huh? This is the place where I began to wonder whether there was some major additional thinking behind the words because the words didn't make sense to me. How on earth are curling leaves metrics information to the tree? Curling leaves are a survival "behavior," and perhaps metrics to someone with a watering can. But I don't water trees...

(There's actually a whole lot more on this particular page that leaves me scratching my head, pondering how the author's view of nature-as-business-model is different from mine. Population explosions in many species, followed by famine-driven die-offs, are pretty common in the nature I know.)

The story about Circuit City's failure on p. 26: "The company's human resource strategy failed." Did the strategy fail, or did they fail to follow the strategy? Maybe it's a nit, but this is a book about strategy.

Strategy #7: "Only the truly transparent will survive." OK. I'll allow that as a premise. However, the example provided is how the totally opaque functioning of AIG and its mortgage-backed securities drove the collapse of the company. I don't see that this example proves the point.

Enough already. I think this book makes an important contribution, and I wish I didn't have to work so hard to figure it out. Being sustainable is hard enough.

Manifesto, yes. Roadmap, no.

I'm really torn about this book because I think the author is clearly brilliant and he is exploring a point of view that is unique, or, at the very least, the first of many authors to publish books in this vein in the coming months.

If you are a business executive with a disposition to sustainability, this book will speak to you and is a must read. He does a pretty good job comparing his perspective to other thinking, such as that of Jim Collins (Built to Last, Good to Great, How the Mighty Fall).

But he opens with an anecdote of how he couldn't reach the leadership in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina and he feels professional regret about not being able to frame his argument in a way it would be received.

I think that's noble and he has tried very hard to be persuasive--speaking in the language of the receiver--in this book, but he almost overly does so, pulling every business and societal buzzword (down to transparency) as conditions to be successful in meeting business and sustainability goals. Heck, actually, sustainability itself is a buzzword these days.

So, what comes out is a well-thought thesis for action, and, despite my headline, a potential roadmap. But, it's potential in that it is theoritical. I think he knows this--hence, the "Manifesto," in the subtitle. "Manifesto" worked for Jerry McGuire, though, and this author evokes similar passion.

Temper your expectations, and I think you'll be impressed with the book and retain--even apply--many of the ideas. Look to this at the ultimate prescription for sustainability in business, and you'll be disappointed.

great ideas, organizaion needs some work

Overall I really liked this book. While Werbach clearly has an environmental streak, he really does a good job of showing the reader that sustainability is more then just environmentalism, and how his long term strategies can help anyone build an enterprise which is successful in the long term. He encourages people to develop what he calls "north star goals" - goals that can be accomplished in 5-15 years and have a beneficial effect on the enterprise and society. His main strategies that he tries to drive home are (summarizing from page 19):
* Diversify across generations
* Adapt to the changing environment
* Celebrate transparency
* Plan and execute systematically, not compartmentally.
* Integrate metrics
* Improve with each cycle
* Right-size regularly, rather than downsize occasionally
* Foster longevity, not immediate gratification
* waste nothing

Unfortunately his organization could use some work. His best definition of sustainability actually comes in the conclusion of the book! (Sustainability means meeting your needs now, while not compromising your ability to meet your needs in the future). There are also a few acronyms he invents that he doesn't define until after they've been used.

The most glaring omission in the book is that while he has loads of examples and ideas, he focuses almost exclusive on the manufacturing sector of the economy, and ignores the service sector. He does mention that his ideas can be applied to the service sector too, but it would be nice to see him give more than just lip service to that notion.

Overall I don't want to dwell on the negatives too much, because there really are some great ideas in this book, and I'm convinced that enterprises which follow his roadmap will certainly be better off in the long term, as will our society as a whole. He celebrates transparency and encourages enterprises to listen to their outside critics as well as work with their partners to mutual benefit. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is thinking about the future of their enterprise and is ready to think long term instead of just to the next quarterly earnings report.

Though the running boom appears to have peaked and even tapered off somewhat, the marathon is still the ultimate running experience for many runners. Higdon's book, although well written, offers very little in the way of new information on training for or running the marathon. Previously published works such as Joe Henderson's Complete Marathoner (Anderson World, 1978), Andy Friedberg's How To Run Your First Marathon (S. & S., 1987), and Ricard Benyo's Making the Marathon Your Event (Random, 1992) offer very similar advice. However, Higdon's anecdotal style provides entertaining reading and may inspire aspiring marathoners. The author provides details of many of his personal marathon experiences as well as those of other top American marathoners such as Bill Rodgers, Don Kardang, and Dick Buerkle. This book will appeal to general readers seriously considering training for their first marathon. For large sports collections.

This book revolutionized my running...

This book changed my running life...probably forever. Yes, Hal's advice could be considered "anecdotal," but anyone who runs long-distance will tell you that all credible running advice is anecdotal; it comes from personal experience or observation. There are no "textbook" right-or-wrong answers in running, and if anyone tries to tell you the "right" way or the "proven way" to do something, they probably don't run much! After I made the decision to run a marathon, a friend recommended that I check out Hal's website. I downloaded one of his free training plans, but ultimately decided that I wanted more in-depth information on how to train (I had only run 3 5k races, ever). So, I got the book. When I officially started training for my first marathon last spring, I could barely run 3 miles without walking or resting. Roughly 32 weeks (and a few social media contacts with Hal regarding my questions) later, I ran my first marathon (26.2 miles). I didn't hit the wall; I didn't feel the need to walk or stop to rest; I had no aches or pains during the race; I had fun; and most importantly: I actually finished the race! I used his Novice Supreme plan, which is very do-able for an inexperienced runner; some runs were as short as 1.5 miles. Also, that specific plan doesn't really require speed work or hill repeats, you just go out and...run. Some days are labeled with a general pace guideline, like "marathon pace" or "easy." In addition to the NS plan, I followed Hal's advice on food, fluids, race day prep, and recovery. By day 4 of my post-marathon recovery, I felt great!

One of things that I love about the book is that Hal's writing style is very conversational. His advice is simple, practical, and to-the-point - no flowery language included! Also, I really appreciated the advice he passed along from real-life runners (elite and not so elite) as well as other running experts (coaches, medical professionals). Hal himself is an accomplished runner and coach, but in a highly individualized sport, what works for him may not work for someone else. His collaborative approach to certain topics really rounded out his advice. I liked the book so much that I actually laminated it with contact paper and started carrying it around in my purse! Now that I have one successful marathon under my belt, I'm looking forward to signing up for another race. I will likely bump up to another one of Hal's novice plans, perhaps Novice 1 or Novice 2. I highly recommend his training plans and books to anyone looking for a simple, effective way to train for their first few marathons, or just looking to PR at their next race. Oh, and by the way - if you're like me and think of every question under the sun, Hal himself is very "available" online. As I mentioned above, I posted several comments on his Facebook page and received a quick reply every time. I definitely appreciated his help!

Principles based on anecdotal evidence

This book has 221 pages. I think the useful information could be condensed down to 20 pages or so. This book makes heavy use of the anecdote pattern. Chapters begin with little stories about elite athletes and experienced runners from which general principles of running are drawn. The problem is that the stories are incomplete and entirely anecdotal. Elite athletes and experienced runners don't need this book and the principles that apply to them don't apply to middle-aged people who truly are beginners. The book doesn't address the subjects of weight and size (very important in long distance running), and it only addresses age at a very superficial level. The good things in this book are: the focus on staying injury free; the incorporation of easy running and rest days into your training schedule; some sample training schedules; some diet advice; and some seemingly useful information about race logistics toward the end. On the negative side, a lot of space is devoted to fluffy stories; evidence to support advice is almost entirely anecdotal; there is practically no advice on runner injuries and how that affects your schedule; and no talk about weight/age; Put simply, this book contains a lot of anecdotal, unscientific, irrelevant, happy, feel-good fluff. The training schedules may work for you, but if they don't you will not have gained enough knowledge from this book to understand how to adapt them to fit your needs.

EDIT: As the author of the book notes in the comments to my review, my review is of the 1999 edition. I haven't seen any of the subsequent editions and can't speak to them.

Fourth Edition: New and Improved

I think I have owned every edition of this book at one time or another. The first edition got me through my first marathon. I followed it to the letter and enjoyed a successful race. Loaned it out and didn't get it back, so I bought the second edition to have as a reference. Loaned that version out and had to go buy the third edition...you get the picture.

The fourth edition is a return to simplicity. Marathon is still a comprehensive guide to how to train for and run a marathon, suitable for newbies and experienced runners alike, but now it is more succinct. The basic information is there, the schedules, my favorite part, are there, but the writing is tighter and there are fewer anecdotes. A couple of new chapters have been added to take into account changes in the running world, such as the increased popularity of the half marathon. Yes, there are schedules for the half, and advice on how to approach this type of race.

Reading Higdon's guide again, I realized I had forgotten how thorough he is. I have a library of marathon/running books now, some much longer and more technical, but this basic reference covers pretty much all the bases. It isn't too complicated and so doesn't scare off the new runner, but isn't too simplistic for the experienced runner. I am still running marathons, and still using Higdon's schedules to get ready, with some modification based on my experience now. When some friend comes to me asking how to train for the marathon, I'll offer him this book and find myself having to buy a replacement copy again.

Very quick, light read despite the genre/material

I enjoyed the book - I ordered it on a whim when I picked up Broken Monsters because I'd read great things about that book and figured The Shining Girls would be good, too.

I won't describe the plot any further; enough reviewers have done that. I finished the book in two evenings. It's a very quick and easy read, and I would recommend it for a good beach/vacation/flight book if you're into this sort of genre. A true rating would be 3 stars for heavy readers of more literary novels, and 4 if you're into James Patterson or Patricia Cornwell. (I am not.)

I feel like the author is a good writer, but I found the characters too shallowly written. The only interesting one was the killer, and I was disappointed to see yet another female character who is supposed to be badass or whatever and instead just comes across as an insufferable twit.

This Didn't Shine For Me

The Shining Girls was an interesting story with a great concept but poorly executed. It left me confused at times and by the end of the book I literally wondered "What was the point of all that?" No explanation of why the killer was doing what he was doing, or any background to the "House", or as to why these girls all "shined". While the author's writing style is easy to read and engaging the story felt unfinished with too many gaping holes leaving unanswered questions and feeling unsatisfied. Disappointing.

The dull girls

This isn't great if I'm honest it's tedious in points
It gets no where and it becomes disinteresting about a quarter of the way through.
I'm giving it three stars it's well written and theirs imagination there but it's not a good enough premise to pursue for a really exciting story

About the Author
WILLIAM EVANS, (1870-1950) a noted American Bible teacher, was born in Liverpool, England, in 1870. Following several years in various pastorates, he was appointed director of the Department of Bible at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Evans devoted his life to directing Bible conferences throughout the United States and Canada, and was the author of more than forty volumes on biblical interpretation including Great Doctrines of the Bible and How to Prepare Sermons.

Tremendous

Mr. Evans has done a great job of placing a lot of material in a small amount of space. His concise way of sharing on the subject of HOMILETICS is exactly what the beginner needs. That is not to say that a seasoned minister cannot benefit from this book. On the contrary, I have been preaching for over 20 years and I found his common sense approach refreshing. It never hurts to go over this stuff again. A quick read.

William Evans approach to sermon writing is traditional, sobering and spiritually educational. The book takes one through clear, concise and biblical challenging steps on preparing sermon outlines and the book is an easy read and the attention span remains on alert. For the serious minister/preacher...

this is a good book for a young minister.

this is the book that i us in teaching young minister. I have found this book to be very helpful and giving them the know how in the areas of how to prepare a sermon. The most of then do very well with this book and they enjoy it. I would tell all young minister to get this book of pastor.
