Alberto Ferrari is a Business Intelligence consultant whose two main interests are in a methodological approach to the BI development lifecycle, and performance tuning of ETL and SQL code. His activities are related to designing and implementing solutions based on Integration Services and Analysis Services for the financial, manufacturing and statistical areas. He is also a book author and a speaker in international conferences such as PASS Summit, SQLRally and SQLBits. Alberto holds an SSAS Maestro certification.

If you want to learn SSAS 2012 Tabular and DAX, then BUY THIS BOOK

If you landed on this Amazon web page, it's likely that you had some interest in SSAS 2012 books on the Tabular Model. If that's the case, order this book and I assure you - not only won't be disappointed, you'll be happy you did.

This is an outstanding book. In the past I've seen some books (even decent books) that purport to cover one technology, but wind up covering so many other peripheral topics that the book loses sight of the original goal. This one doesn't - the content focuses precisely on the title: the BISM Tabular Model.

There are many little gems in here: from a small section on Kerberos (that helped me to understand something), to intricacies in DAX formulas, to recommendations on hierarchies, to implementing dynamic security. In addition to many complete chapters on the tabular model, here are some additional great chapters:

- The DAX chapters might even rival entire books on DAX. The authors managed to pack many examples into 2 chapters.

- The authors clearly communicate feature comparisons between the Tabular Model and the multidimensional model, and also which tabular features will work optimally (and which won't) when using the Tabular Model in PowerView.

- The chapter on security is excellent and covers several scenarios.

- The authors have a chapter towards the end on using XMLA to process Tabular Models. While I already knew most of this, I'm so glad to see authors covering this. Guys, thank you, THANK YOU.

- The authors cover advanced relationships, and show some examples of DAX formulas that you'll need to supplement bridge table scenarios. While the tabular model (in my opinion) doesn't handle many-to-many scenarios quite as gracefully as SSAS multidimensional, the authors show how you can implement equivalent functionality.

Also, SSAS multi-dimensional developers will appreciate the many comparisons between the MDM and the tabular model. This is a complete book by authors who have already developed a reputation for delivering strong content.
(And by the way, if you didn't already know it, these authors wrote "Expert Cube Development with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services" a few years ago, an equally outstanding book on the "standard" multidimensional model.

Guys, fantastic job. No book can cover EVERYTHING, but you guys came very close. It's hard to believe someone could improve on what you did with the Expert Cube Development book (which was awesome and helped me greatly), but you seem to have done it.

Microsoft BI MUST BUY BOOK

If you do Microsoft Business Intelligence beyond simple reporting, this book is a must buy.

The authors clearly explain how the new version of Analysis Services fits in the Microsoft BI family of products.
Now that's a big achievement because that tool (and advanced analysis) are not easily understood.

However Marco, Alberto and Chris are both master communicators and masters of the technology.
In addition, you will begin to understand the world of database/data analysis beyond the relational database.
In our world of big data warehouses, tools beyond the relation database are a must.

Having been a Microsoft Partner Consultant, BI Architect and chairman of a Microsoft BI User's Group, I'm keenly aware of how difficult it is to communicate these advanced concepts--and to turn them into practical solutions.

The return on your time for using this book will be several orders of magnitude, and the sooner you start, the bigger the return.

Heartfelt thanks to the authors for helping all of us in the Microsoft BI World see more clearly and create better solutions!

Essential reading for any BI/DW developer

After reading quite a few books on Business Intelligence, this is the first one that really made sense. There were certainly many "penny-drop" moments. Although I wouldn't recommend this if you're just starting out, you need a bit of BI and Data Warehousing knowledge before you jump in. My only criticism is that some chapters were very detailed and quite advanced. These parts would have been better off separated in an "advanced" chapter or similar. I've found revisiting the chapters as you find practical applications also heaps with these advanced sections. Also note that the kindle version does not have a table of contents so it is difficult to jump to chapters or find specific parts without bookmarking them.

This is essential reading for any BI/DW developer and anyone learning the DAX language.

This handbook really is essential!

I am a consultant working with small nonprofits (typically with 4 - 10 employees). I have held many different roles including CEO of a nonprofit health organization and development director for small museums. The authors give specific, relevant examples, and they walk you through each process. Even if you know a topic well, the text is a helpful review with new ideas.

In a small nonprofit where you are wearing many development hats, the book is really useful for the topic that you haven’t worked on in a while, so you feel you need a refresher before you jump into a new development project. It will be helpful to both the CEO as well as development staff members.

The authors never lose sight of the fact that you are working with a small team. You will find each chapter full of great additional resources that you and your staff can use and that you can use to help educate your board members. A good read!

I am currently the Associate Director at a small botanical garden but have been in development, fund raising and charity event planning for nearly 20 years. This book served as a great "refresher" on several tried and true topics, lessons and tips. But also, had some new ways of thinking, trends and things to think about in 2014. It is chock full of good information and includes some wonderful additional resources and links on many topics. It is easy to read and can be done chapter by chapter depending on where you or your organization are in a certain point of your development, marketing or strategic plan. Give it a read!

It reads like a term paper

The book had lots of good information but was hard for me to wade through. It's a series of college papers on the subject of gender and two-spirit people. I think the second half was most helpful (the stories of several two-spirits). Like I said, there was lots of info, it was just a little hard to follow.

A drum education classic!

The practice systems in this book will without question expand your abilities on the drums, making you a better improviser, improving your coordination, and giving you a greater command of displacement and the ability to move ideas around in your phrasing (including over the bar phrases and polyrhythmic-sounding ideas). Mark presents a detailed system to improve your playing in various areas (dynamics, rate, orchestration, phrasing), and along the way you'll be asked to develop your own ideas using his template. It's one of the few drum books I've seen that gives you a process for learning drums that results in you creating your own ideas, not just copying what's in the book.

Get into the mind of Mark Guiliana. "There are no short cuts"

Mark Guiliana reveals his methods for developing creativity. You begin to understand how Mark became such a monster musician; practice, practice, practice. Smart practice. In this book he's not showing you how to play like him, but how to develop your own creativity through the systems he has used to develop. This is a study in how to practice and get the most out what you can do, rather than a method book full of licks, grooves and fills. Mark encourages taking these concepts and making them your own. In fact, he sounds genuinely excited to know he is lighting the creative spark in others. This text is likely to become a classic for those drummers looking to find their unique voice and develop their command of the instrument. I look forward to bringing Mark's concepts into my own playing.

The video content, including examples, open solos and band performances are perfect to further illustrate the book's concepts.

About the Author
Arthur L. Guptill (1891-1956) who co-founded Watson-Guptill Publications and was co-editor of American Artist magazine, was an architect, a painter, an art director, an author, and a teacher. Born in Gorham, Maine, he graduated with a degree in architecture from Pratt Institute in 1912, and then studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A partner in Bearse & Guptill, architectural designers and illustrators, from 1919 to 1925, Mr. Guptill was a freelance specialist in design, freelance advertising artist, and advertising agency consultant from 1916 to 1937. The founder, president, and director of activities of the Amateur Artists Association of America, Mr. Guptill wrote numerous art instruction books. He taught at Pratt and the Brooklyn Museum and was a member of the Art Directors Club of New York and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in England. Susan E. Meyer was born and raised in New York City. She was graduated from the University of Wisconsin and attended the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy. Ms. Meyer has had a long history of involvement with Arthur Guptill's work. For over seven years, as managing editor of Watson-Guptill Publications, the company he co-founded, she compiled and edited his books. In that capacity, she also compiled, edited, and collaborated on a number of other books on watercolorists and their techniques, painting portraits, and designing with type. In addition, Ms. Meyer was editor of American Artist magazine, where Guptill himself was once co-editor. She is the author of over a dozen books and is currently the director of Roundtable Press, Inc. in New York City.

No other book is necessary

If you have a desire to learn to draw with pen and ink this is the first book you should buy. It is thorough and informative. It goes into great detail about different techniques used to obtain certain effects (or textures). I refer to this book time and time again, and although my main media is not pen and ink, I cannot help but to be inspired by his lessons.
This is a fun medium and an inexpensive one. If you are truly interested in learning the ins and outs of pen and ink drawing and can only afford one book, this is the book.

If you like ink, you MUST buy this

Years ago, when spare time was still a reality for me, I used to draw birds and other animals in ink. I still love ink, maybe because I love the minutest details that it can express so well. The main reason why I purchased this book was not the text, and the pedagocical content, but the many splendid splendid illustrations from masters of the art. Still, I ended up also reading this book, even if I spent much more time admiring the illustrations. It is beautifully written, you immediately realize why this book has become an eternal "classic". But the illustrations, the illustrations are literally awesome. Every time I have this book in my hands I feel that I want to start drawing again. There are example of every sort, and they are all equally splendid: landscapes, portraits, architectural drawings, images of fables and monuments. Believe me, if you like ink, you will have a hard time finding a better book that this. If you would like to start drawing in ink, or if you would like to improve your technique, you will like this book even more, but the illustrations are worth the price by themselves. No wonder that all reviewers appear to agree! This book is fantastic.

Your 'Bible' for Pen & Ink!

This book is: 1) To the point and clear to understand. 2) Detailed with explainations for all techniques. 3) Filled with illustrations and examples cover-to-cover. I consider this to be my 'bible' for Pen & Ink. I was able to learn so much in such a short amount of time. It made my experience, excelling in this media, fun and enjoyable to go through! This is a MUST to have in your collection!

Gardener's Guide To Growing Orchids

I have 5 or 6 books on basic orchid care and this supasses all of them in depth of content. It is simple to understand and the pictures are breathtaking. More importantly, they examine every part of orchid care, not just the basic air, light, water. There are detailed instructions on how to hybridize your own orchids, which I have only seen before in costly advanced books. I feel this book is an excellent resource for the beginner who has an orchid or two and wishes to know more. It's a handy reference for "just the basics" as well.

True Beginners & Beginners w/ High Aspirations

As a windowsill orchid hobbyist who already owns a few beginner's books, I found this one to be beautifully designed with gorgeous photos and photographic step-by-step directions on full repotting (including root trimming), dropping on an orchid (moving a healthy but overgrown plant to a larger pot w/o touching root system), orchids in baskets, and mounting orchids on bark. The section on pests/disease is also very clearly articulated with large photographic examples.
The book does, however, go into quite a bit of detail about different types of orchid pollination, propagation, as well as greenhouse construction. While these topics might be interesting for the first-time grower, I'm a little unsure as to whether most "newbies" starting out with a handful of plants have THAT kind of space, time, or money to devote to the hobby, at least at first. I was also hoping for a bit more info on miniature orchids. Then again, coming from a f/t grad student who has to relocate herself and her orchids every 6-10 months, you may want to take that with a grain of salt! Buy this book? Yes! But you may later want something else that suits your specific growing conditions.

The book I keep going back to

I have been collecting and growing Orchids now for over 10 years but still consider myself a novice to Orchid science. I have read many books on Orchid keeping but find myself always going back to this book for refreshers and tips. I believe I owe my first Orchid re-bloom to this book. I highly recommend this book to both new and experienced lovers of Orchids.
