A drum education classic!

The practice systems in this book will without question expand your abilities on the drums, making you a better improviser, improving your coordination, and giving you a greater command of displacement and the ability to move ideas around in your phrasing (including over the bar phrases and polyrhythmic-sounding ideas). Mark presents a detailed system to improve your playing in various areas (dynamics, rate, orchestration, phrasing), and along the way you'll be asked to develop your own ideas using his template. It's one of the few drum books I've seen that gives you a process for learning drums that results in you creating your own ideas, not just copying what's in the book.

Get into the mind of Mark Guiliana. "There are no short cuts"

Mark Guiliana reveals his methods for developing creativity. You begin to understand how Mark became such a monster musician; practice, practice, practice. Smart practice. In this book he's not showing you how to play like him, but how to develop your own creativity through the systems he has used to develop. This is a study in how to practice and get the most out what you can do, rather than a method book full of licks, grooves and fills. Mark encourages taking these concepts and making them your own. In fact, he sounds genuinely excited to know he is lighting the creative spark in others. This text is likely to become a classic for those drummers looking to find their unique voice and develop their command of the instrument. I look forward to bringing Mark's concepts into my own playing.

The video content, including examples, open solos and band performances are perfect to further illustrate the book's concepts.

About the Author
Arthur L. Guptill (1891-1956) who co-founded Watson-Guptill Publications and was co-editor of American Artist magazine, was an architect, a painter, an art director, an author, and a teacher. Born in Gorham, Maine, he graduated with a degree in architecture from Pratt Institute in 1912, and then studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A partner in Bearse & Guptill, architectural designers and illustrators, from 1919 to 1925, Mr. Guptill was a freelance specialist in design, freelance advertising artist, and advertising agency consultant from 1916 to 1937. The founder, president, and director of activities of the Amateur Artists Association of America, Mr. Guptill wrote numerous art instruction books. He taught at Pratt and the Brooklyn Museum and was a member of the Art Directors Club of New York and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in England. Susan E. Meyer was born and raised in New York City. She was graduated from the University of Wisconsin and attended the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy. Ms. Meyer has had a long history of involvement with Arthur Guptill's work. For over seven years, as managing editor of Watson-Guptill Publications, the company he co-founded, she compiled and edited his books. In that capacity, she also compiled, edited, and collaborated on a number of other books on watercolorists and their techniques, painting portraits, and designing with type. In addition, Ms. Meyer was editor of American Artist magazine, where Guptill himself was once co-editor. She is the author of over a dozen books and is currently the director of Roundtable Press, Inc. in New York City.

No other book is necessary

If you have a desire to learn to draw with pen and ink this is the first book you should buy. It is thorough and informative. It goes into great detail about different techniques used to obtain certain effects (or textures). I refer to this book time and time again, and although my main media is not pen and ink, I cannot help but to be inspired by his lessons.
This is a fun medium and an inexpensive one. If you are truly interested in learning the ins and outs of pen and ink drawing and can only afford one book, this is the book.

Years ago, when spare time was still a reality for me, I used to draw birds and other animals in ink. I still love ink, maybe because I love the minutest details that it can express so well. The main reason why I purchased this book was not the text, and the pedagocical content, but the many splendid splendid illustrations from masters of the art. Still, I ended up also reading this book, even if I spent much more time admiring the illustrations. It is beautifully written, you immediately realize why this book has become an eternal "classic". But the illustrations, the illustrations are literally awesome. Every time I have this book in my hands I feel that I want to start drawing again. There are example of every sort, and they are all equally splendid: landscapes, portraits, architectural drawings, images of fables and monuments. Believe me, if you like ink, you will have a hard time finding a better book that this. Gardener's Guide To Growing Orchids

I have 5 or 6 books on basic orchid care and this supasses all of them in depth of content. It is simple to understand and the pictures are breathtaking. More importantly, they examine every part of orchid care, not just the basic air, light, water. There are detailed instructions on how to hybridize your own orchids, which I have only seen before in costly advanced books. I feel this book is an excellent resource for the beginner who has an orchid or two and wishes to know more. It's a handy reference for "just the basics" as well.

True Beginners & Beginners w/ High Aspirations

As a windowsill orchid hobbyist who already owns a few beginner's books, I found this one to be beautifully designed with gorgeous photos and photographic step-by-step directions on full repotting (including root trimming), dropping on an orchid (moving a healthy but overgrown plant to a larger pot w/o touching root system), orchids in baskets, and mounting orchids on bark. The section on pests/disease is also very clearly articulated with large photographic examples.
The book does, however, go into quite a bit of detail about different types of orchid pollination, propagation, as well as greenhouse construction. While these topics might be interesting for the first-time grower, I'm a little unsure as to whether most "newbies" starting out with a handful of plants have THAT kind of space, time, or money to devote to the hobby, at least at first. I was also hoping for a bit more info on miniature orchids. Then again, coming from a f/t grad student who has to relocate herself and her orchids every 6-10 months, you may want to take that with a grain of salt! Buy this book? Yes! But you may later want something else that suits your specific growing conditions.

I have been collecting and growing Orchids now for over 10 years but still consider myself a novice to Orchid science. I have read many books on Orchid keeping but find myself always going back to this book for refreshers and tips. I believe I owe my first Orchid re-bloom to this book. I highly recommend this book to both new and experienced lovers of Orchids.

A Must Read to Increase Your Probability of Win & Achieve Growth Objectives

If you are a member of the Business Development and Sales community, this is a must read book. Many companies can write award winning proposals with innovative technical and management solutions. Unfortunately, this will only get your company's foot in the door and "technically" qualify you to do the work. The cost volume, or price, in all probability will be the critical factor in winning business. If your company is losing on price, or winning but leaving money on the table, then this book will be a critical enabler to increase your win rate. This book is highly recommended for Executives, BD managers, Capture Managers and pricing professionals. The 3 phase, 10 step process to develop a price-to-win strategy can be fully integrated within your company's existing BD process. Moreover, this book provides a road map for establishing a P2W capability and developing P2W practicioners that will round out your capture team. Published in September of 2011, this comprehensive approach to developing P2W strategy is the most recent "best practice" to hit the streets. My company is fully implementing this process into our BD operation. Reading this book will expose serious weaknesses in BD and Capture activities within your organization. I highly recommend this book.

Very Useful Reference in Today's Price-Sensitive Marketplace

As a veteran of multiple price to win and strategic pricing seminars, and a customer for a number of price to win analyses, I was pleased to see one of the industry experts put it all down on paper as a reference. Clearly this is a specialized book that isnt intended for mass market appeal and it has a price to match. However, the price can be easily justified if you ever need to hire in a price to win consultant as it makes you smart enough to know what you need, and knowing that can save your company thousands. For those who need to go beyond that to build an 'in house' price to win capability the book is essential, providing a suite of techniques that you can tailor to the scale of the bid you are undertaking. I give the current version of the book 4 stars as I would prefer a more detailed discussion of pricing strategy, which is a specialized topic in itself, and is apparently going to be addressed in the second edition.

A very good Famous Five adventure

This is another fabulous book in the Famous Five series. The famous five are Julian, Dick, Anne, George(actually Georgiana but she hates being a girl) and their dog Timmy. Like other famous five adventures, this one starts with the children enjoying their vacation where they subsequently fall into an adventure and finally end up rescuing a couple of kidnapped pilots. The plot is simple enough but then provides ample excitement. Just like all the other Enid Blyton adventure books, this one is a real treat to read. There is no doubt that Enid Blyton is(was; unfortunately, she died) one of the best authors for children's books. What makes her books ideal for children? The kids are happy because of the plots and the variety(Enid Blyton created numerous characters ranging from goblins and elves to children). It is wonderful world of make believe where one book is not sufficient but several are needed to quench the thirst. The parents are happy because the books contain no bad content. Even though the stories sound a little make believe, they are based on sound values and principles. They establish a code for behavior. I remember reading Enid Blyton books as a child and understanding all about good behavior(polite answers to adults, being good and helpful to other people, being kind to animals, being responsible etc). The content of most Enid Blyton stories is also pure unlike of the fairytales by Hans Christian Anderson and Brothers Grimm that can be depressing and even violent sometimes. The famous five do fall into adventures. However, they do come out of them without scaring the young readers to glory. The famous five behave well, especially Julian, the eldest who is known for his polite behavior and charming manners. Truly, Enid Blyton has managed to capture images of childhood that are slowing becoming memories. In these days of Nintendo and other computer games, her books come as a refreshing change. A piece of old world charm in a modern society. A must read for all generations who wish to go beyond the mere computer game and disney story.

THE BEST FOR A FIRST READ!

Enid’s Famous Five books featuring Julian, Dick, George and Anne and Timmy the dog, were the catalyst which encouraged me to start reading more than 50 years ago. Thank you, Enid. The BBC, many public libraries, local authorities and alleged educational experts have been completely wrong about the worth of the Blyton works. I can remember having quite a lot of difficulty obtaining the original books as so many places would not stock them. The stories are great to read for their simplicity and straightforwardness.

When one did find copies of the book they were quite expensive all those years ago but great to own. I loved the letter on the back cover from Enid in some of the editions, and also the physical appearance of the book which I treasured as a youngster with the way the books were produced then which made them somehow much easier to read.

It’s a delight to read the stories again in middle age although recent editing has diminished some of the memories I have of the original editions and words used then (but I am now getting old).

Never mind… these books remain one of my best friends for life: they began my own reading adventure so do read these special adventures for yourselves.
