Travis Jacobs could do anything for eight seconds. At least, that's what he told himself every time he climbed up the side of a bull chute. Tonight's Vegas crowd was loud and enthusiastic, their attention centered on the current rider being bucked around the arena by Devil's Draw.

Putting the other cowboys in the competition from his mind, he looked at Esquire below him, checking for any sign of agitation. Then he rolled his cuffs up a couple of turns, pulled his brown Stetson low and tugged a worn, leather glove onto his right hand.

The crowd groaned in sympathy a mere second before the horn sounded, telling Travis that Buckwheat Dawson had come off the bull. Up next, Travis swung his leg over the chute rail and drew a bracing breath. While Karl Schmitty held the rope, he adjusted the rigging and wrapped his hand. Wasting no time, he slid up square on the bull and gave a sharp nod to the gate operator.

The chute opened, and all four of Esquire's feet instantly left the ground. The Brahma shot out into the arena then straight up in the air under the bright lights. The crowd roared its pleasure as the black bull twisted left, hind feet reaching high, while Travis leaned back, spurred, his arm up, muscles pumped, fighting for all he was worth to keep himself square on the animal's back.

Esquire turned right, twisting beneath Travis, shaking him as if he was a bothersome gnat. Three seconds turned to four. Travis's hand burned against the rope, and his wrist felt like it was about to dislocate. The strain sent a branching iron along his spine, but he also felt completely and totally alive. For a brief space of time, life was reduced to its essence. Nothing mattered but the battle between Travis and the bull.

Esquire made an abrupt left turn, nearly unseating Travis, but he kept his form. His hat flew off into the dust. The blaring music and the roar of the crowd disappeared, obliterated by the pulse of blood pumping past his ears.

The horn sounded just before Esquire made one final leap, unseating Travis, sending him catapulting through the air. Travis summersaulted, grazing the bull's left horn, quickly twisting his body to avoid hitting the ground head-on. His shoulder came down first, with his back taking the brunt of the impact. As the air whooshed out of his lungs, a face in the crowd danced before his eyes.

Danielle? What the heck was Danielle doing in Vegas?

Then Esquire's menacing form filled his vision, and he leaped to his feet. Corey Samson, one of the bullfighters, jumped between them, distracting the animal while Travis sprinted to the fence.

Glancing back, he realized Danielle had to be a figment of his imagination. The crowd was nowhere near close enough for him to recognize a particular face. He heaved himself over the top of the fence and jumped to the ground on the other side.

"Nice one." Buckwheat clapped him good-naturedly on the back.

"Hey, Travis," Corey yelled from inside the arena.

Travis turned to see Corey toss him his hat. He caught the Stetson in midair, and Corey gave him a thumbs-up.

"Ninety-one point three," the announcer cried into the sound system.

The crowd roared louder, while lasers and colored spotlights circled the arena, the music coming up once more. Travis was the night's last rider, meaning he'd just won ten thousand dollars.

He stuffed his hat on his head and vaulted back over the fence onto the thick dirt, waving to the crowd and accepting the congratulations of the clowns and cowboys.

"You have got to go pro," Corey shouted in his ear.

"Just blowin' off some steam," Travis responded, keeping his grin firmly in place for the spectators, knowing he'd be projected onto the Jumbotron.

His older brother, Seth, had recently been married, and he'd committed his next three years to working on the Lyndon Valley railway project. Responsibility for the family's Colorado cattle ranch now rested completely on Travis's shoulders. Faced with that looming reality, he'd discovered he had a few wild oats left to sow.

"You could make a lot of money on the circuit," said Corey.

Travis let himself fantasize for a minute about going on the road as a professional bull rider. The image was tantalizing-to be footloose and fancy free, no cattle to tend, no ranch hands, no bills, no responsibilities. He'd ride a couple of times a week, hit the clubs, meet friendly women. There were no bleak, dusty, hick towns on this particular rodeo circuit. It was all bright lights and five-star hotels.

For a moment, he resented the lost opportunity. But he forcibly swallowed his own frustration. If he'd wanted to be a bull rider, he should have spoken up before now. While his brother and sisters were all choosing their own life paths, Travis should have said something about leaving the ranch. But it was too late. He was the last Jacobs cowboy, and somebody had to run the place.

A small crowd had gathered in the middle of the arena to celebrate his win. He unzipped his flak jacket to circulate a little air. Then he accepted the prize buckle and the check from the event manager and gave a final wave of his hat to the crowd.

Mind still mulling what might have been, he turned and fell into step beside Corey, their boots puffing up dust as they moved toward the gate.

"How long have you been on the road?" he found himself asking the bullfighter.

"Nearly ten years now," Corey responded. "Started when I was seventeen."

"You ever get tired of it?"

"What's to get tired? The excitement? The adventure? The women?"

Travis stuffed the check in his shirt pocket. "You know what I mean."

"Yeah, I know. When I get tired of the wheels turning, I go back to the folks' place in New Mexico for a while."

"Ever tempted to stay there?" Travis was trying to reassure himself that life on the road got old, that all men eventually wanted a real home.

Corey shook his head. "Nope. Though, last trip home, there was this pretty red-haired gal living down the road."

Travis chuckled at the yearning expression on Corey's face. "I take it she's calling you back to New Mexico?"

"Not yet, but likely soon. She's got some kind of a bullfighter fantasy going on inside that head of hers, and she's decided I'm the fire she wants to play with."

Travis burst out laughing.

Corey grinned and cocked an eyebrow.

"No pretty women calling me back to my hometown." There was nothing calling to Travis except cattle and horses.

Though, for some reason, his thoughts moved back to Danielle. But she wasn't from his hometown, and she sure wasn't any young innocent. She was twenty-eight, only a year younger than Travis. She was a graduate of Harvard Law, a practicing lawyer and probably the smartest, most sophisticated woman he'd ever met. She also flat out refused to give him the time of day.

"Think of that as another reason to go on the road," Corey countered.

"I'm on the road right now," said Travis. There wasn't a reason in the world he couldn't be footloose for the next few days.

He'd earned it, and he had a check in his pocket just itching to get spent.

"That you are." Corey clapped him on the back. "Let's hit the clubs and show off that new buckle of yours. I bet there are dozens of gorgeous ladies out there just dying to hear how you rode the bull a full eight seconds, and how I saved your life in the arena."

"Is that how you're going to play it? That you saved my life?"

"Damn straight," said Corey.

There were two men in the world Danielle Marin wanted to avoid. Unfortunately, both of them had turned up in Vegas.

She was attending an international law conference, so she'd been on alert for Randal Kleinfeld. It seemed likely the wunderkind D.C. attorney would show up for a lecture by his university mentor Stan Sterling. But Travis Jacobs had come out of left field, literally.

She'd been blindsided when the announcer called his name at the bull riding show, then mesmerized when the bucking bull burst from the chute. Travis made it look effortless, as if he'd been born on the back of a Brahma. That he'd won should have come as no surprise to her. When it came to all things ranching and rough stock, Travis was a master. Stone-faced and rugged, tough and no-nonsense, he was the absolute antithesis of the smooth-talking, urbane Randal.

Show over, and back at the conference hotel with her friends, Danielle couldn't help but ponder the differences between the two men. Travis sticking in her mind, she took a bracing swallow of her vodka martini.

"That's the spirit, Dani," called Astra Lindy from across the table, raising her cosmo in a mock toast.

"I told you it would be fun," said Nadine Beckman as she accepted a frozen Bellini from their waitress.

The four women were less than a mile from the bull riding arena, relaxing in the lobby lounge. The temperature was mid-seventies, a light breeze blowing in from the hotel pool and the gardens.

"It was a blast," Odette Gray agreed with an enthusiastic nod. "Cowboys have the sexiest butts." She'd gone with a light beer.

The other two women laughed. Danielle smiled, keeping her expression lighthearted, even as she called up a mental image of Travis walking away. It simply wasn't fair. How could so much sexiness be wrapped up in such an exasperating man? And what kind of character flaw made her want him?

She took another healthy sip of her drink, regretting that she'd let her three friends talk her into the bull riding excursion. It had seemed like a harmless diversion after a full day of conference topics like Comparative Legal Systems and Cross Border Taxation. And it should have been a harmless diversion. Who could have predicted that Travis Jacobs would choose this week to leave Lyndon Valley and show up in Vegas?

"I'd do a cowboy," Nadine brazenly declared.

"In a heartbeat," Odette agreed.

"Up close, they're dusty and crude," Danielle pointed out, speaking to herself as much as to the other women. "They talk slow, use short sentences, very small words."

"Crude can be sexy," said Nadine. "And the dust washes off."

Sadly, deep down in her secret heart of hearts, Danielle agreed. She'd once seen Travis after he'd cleaned up. The result had made her gasp for breath, and put her libido into overdrive.

"Dani knows cowboys," said Astra. "She spends a lot of time in Colorado."

"I wouldn't call it a lot of time," Danielle corrected.

Truth was, she avoided Lyndon Valley as much as possible. The Jacobs spread was right next to the Terrell ranch. And Caleb Terrell was one of her major clients. He lived in Lyndon Valley only part-time, so she could usually arrange to put in her hours for Active Equipment at his Chicago head office or at her own law office on the Chicago River.

"Caleb's a cowboy," said Astra. "He doesn't use small words."

"I was generalizing," Danielle admitted.

On a night like tonight, she needed to take every opportunity to remind herself there was a world of difference between her and Travis Jacobs. She was closer to Randal in background, values, temperament and, of course, profession.

She'd dated Randal in law school, breaking up with him at graduation when he secured a prime internship in D.C. and she had accepted the offer in Chicago. He'd wanted to stay together, but she knew it wouldn't work out. Long-distance relationships never did. Plus, she hadn't been convinced he was the one. He was close, and she couldn't exactly say what was missing. But her instincts had told her to end it.

Randal had not been happy with the split. Not that he had anything to complain about the way things turned out. He was rising fast on the D.C. legal scene. The firm he worked for, Nester and Hedley, had clients that included senators, congressmen and captains of international industry. Danielle's Chicago job was bush-league by comparison.

Which made it strange that a partner from Nester and Hedley had contacted her last week, making her an offer that was all but impossible to refuse. She could only assume Randal had a hand in it, and she didn't know whether to thank him or berate him.

The job would give her a chance to build toward an equity partnership in a prestigious, cutting-edge firm. Any lawyer would jump at that. But she didn't want to be beholden to Randal. And she didn't want to date him again. Maybe she was being ridiculously conceited, but she couldn't help but wonder if that would turn out to be part of the package.

"Good evening, ladies," drawled a male voice.

She glanced up to see a vaguely familiar man in a black cowboy hat, a blue-and-green Western shirt and faded blue jeans. A split second later, she caught sight of Travis slightly behind him, worn Stetson low on his brow, face tanned brown, a challenging glint in his cobalt eyes.

She was honestly too tired for this.

"Are you from the rodeo?" asked Nadine, glancing from one to the other.

"We are," the stranger answered.

Astra pointed to Travis. "He's the guy who won, isn't he?"

"Are you a bull rider, too?" Nadine chirped to the other man.

"I'm a bullfighter."

"So, one of the clowns?" she asked.

"There's a big difference between a clown and a bullfighter, ma'am. For example." He jabbed this thumb toward Travis. "I saved this guy's life tonight."

"I saw that," Odette put in knowingly.

"Nice buckle." Nadine had turned her attention and her brilliant smile to Travis. She reached out and touched the shiny, gold and silver prize at his waist.

Danielle couldn't help but roll her eyes at the bling. Really? He had to wear it?

"This is Travis Jacobs," the stranger introduced, removing his hat. "He's tonight's bull riding champion. And I'm Corey Samson, bullfighter extraordinaire."

"Did he really save your life?" Odette asked Travis on a note of awe. Danielle knew the question was more about flirting than any true amazement at Corey's feat.

Corey looked to Travis and waited.

"He most certainly did," Travis acknowledged staunchly. "Bullfighters are highly skilled, highly trained, and among the bravest men on the planet."

The word wingman flitted through Danielle's brain. Travis was trying to help his friend pick up Odette.

Nadine turned to her. "That wasn't short sentences and small words."

Travis's challenging gaze turned on Danielle. It was clear he remembered her using that particular phrase in the past.

"It was a generalization," she repeated, refusing to break eye contact with him.

"That's very impressive," Odette told Corey with an almost comical flutter of her eyelashes.

"Danielle is continuously unequivocal in her elevated specifications for interactive discourse," said Travis, keeping his expression completely neutral.

"How does he know your name?" Astrid immediately demanded.

"We met in Colorado," said Travis.

"Briefly," Danielle pointed out.

"Dance?" Corey asked Odette.

"Love to." She giggled as she came to her feet.

"Dance?" Travis asked Danielle.

"Too busy with my drink," she responded airily, lifting her long-stemmed glass.

"I'll dance with you," Nadine chimed in with obvious enthusiasm, holding out a hand.

"Ma'am," Travis answered her, gallantly tipping his hat, taking her hand and helping her to her feet.

"You know a real live bull riding champion?" Astrid asked Danielle as the two couples left the covered deck for the dance floor inside, and Danielle concentrated on not looking at Tra-vis's rear end.

"He's not a champion." Danielle went ahead and finished off the martini. "He only does it as a hobby."

"He's pretty good."

Good book but...
By Christine
Good book in a good series, but lot of mistakes. Hard enough to keep things straight in a continuity, but when the books can't keep them straight it's even harder. Caleb was listed as a best friend, a brother, and a brother on law to the main character. He was also married to Mandy and Katrina was married to reed, but when Caleb went home Katrina was who lived with him. There were other examples, but these were the most confusing. Hard to keep from being distracted, but a good story if you can set these issues aside.

The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child, by Francisco Jimnez

After dark in a Mexican border town, a father holds open a hole in a wire fence as his wife and two small boys crawl through.

So begins life in the United States for many people every day. And so begins this collection of twelve autobiographical stories by Santa Clara University professor Francisco Jimnez, who at the age of four illegally crossed the border with his family in 1947.

"The Circuit," the story of young Panchito and his trumpet, is one of the most widely anthologized stories in Chicano literature. At long last, Jimnez offers more about the wise, sensitive little boy who has grown into a role model for subsequent generations of immigrants.

These independent but intertwined stories follow the family through their circuit, from picking cotton and strawberries to topping carrots--and back agai--over a number of years. As it moves from one labor camp to the next, the little family of four grows into ten. Impermanence and poverty define their lives. But with faith, hope, and back-breaking work, the family endures.

"A jewel of a book"--Rolando Hinojosa-Smith

"These stories are so realistic they choke the heart."--Rudolfo Anaya

From School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up-Francisco Jimenez was born in Mexico, entered California illegally as a very young child, and spent his boyhood alternating between migrant farm work and the classroom. This collection of autobiographical short stories was written years later, when Jimenez had become an established professor at Santa Clara University (CA), but they give immediate access to the feelings of the growing boy. Adrian Vargas reads in a lightly accented English, offering a voice that is evidently that of the full grown man remembering, rather than that of the youth he remembers. Each story is simple, direct, and redolent with the smells of the earth, the sounds of the ever-changing home with its growing number of siblings, and the amazing experiences each new schoolroom offers. The frustrations range from those specific to poverty and migrancy, including the inability to follow up on promises made by a good teacher because the family moves on the day the offer of trumpet lessons has been proffered, through the universal experience of an older brother saddled with an ignorant younger sibling who insensitively feeds his prized penny collection into the grocery store's gumball machine. Jimenez and Vargas both maintain a leisurely pace appropriate to storytelling that can reach a wide audience, giving the images constructed from words time to bloom in the audience's mind before wrapping each tale in a tight, often surprising, close. Highly recommended for both pleasure listening and for classroom use and discussion.

The Circuit of Living
By Lenora G.
This is a collection of short stories based on real life. Mr. Jimenez was born in Mexico, and came to California as a young boy with his parents. They were undocumented workers. Eventually he became not only a citizen, but a professor at Santa Clara University in California.

These stories, based on his own life, and the lives of his friends and relatives, give an immediate entre into the world of the migrant worker. How hard it was to make a living, how difficult to attend school, to make friends, to become educated. How impossible to keep promises made.

This is a collection of compelling stories, that will make you laugh, and make you cry. It tells about the people who pick the lettuce in the salad you just ate, the cotton in that tee-shirt you're wearing, the oranges in your juicer.

If you've never thought about who picks those cherries you're eating right now, this book will give you those thoughts. It is a delightful book, filled with love, tenderness, compassion, and passion. This book will introduce you to the people who work the fields, cook our meals, wait our tables, who go unnoticed unless it is politically expedient to see them.

O. Henry wrote "Gift of the Magi" which is marvelous; Dr. Jimenez wrote "Christmas Gift" which will be the Star in your night! It is now August, and Christmas is a few days down the calendar, but now is the time to start buying those stocking stuffers, and this is certainly one you want get as many copies as you need for all those stockings you need to stuff!

I love how the books grow in sophistication with Panchito
By Julie A. Drew
I have read this book multiple times, since I have used it as a read-aloud for intermediate students as well as in book groups with adult ESL students. I love how the books grow in sophistication with Panchito, who wrote the books as an adult, using notebooks he kept as a young man, as well as his memory. This book, the first, is very simply written, and the second, about his high school years, grows more explicit about the barriers he faced as a boy from a migrant-worker family. The third and fourth books deal with his time at Santa Clara University, and his graduate time at Columbia in New York.
As a frequent reader of the series, and particularly this book, I can state that I have never grown tired of the story, from Panchito's memories of the train trip to Tijuana to crawl under a fence to be met by a coyote who would take the family to the fruit fields, to his first day at school in a time before bilingual education, to his growth in conscience and social awareness, to the family's eventual deportation. These are great books, especially in this time when empathy for "economic refugees" seems in short supply in our nation's political life.

I wasn't feeling terribly excited to do so
By J. Andersen
I was asked to read this book for school. I wasn't feeling terribly excited to do so. I just have a hard time reading books for school, especially when they are not what I would normally read. However, I started reading this book and I finished half of it in one sitting, going well over and above what was assigned reading. I finished the book in two goes. It was engaging and interesting. This book was powerful and insightful and really helped me to understand the plight of the migrant worker and his family, especially the children of migrant workers. I am planning to buy the other books in the series even though they are not assigned to me, just to understand how this remarkable man came from nothing to a college professor in his life. I was very happy with this book.

Creative Industries of Detroit: The Untold Story of Detroit's Secret Concept Car Builder, by Leon Dixon

As America entered the postwar 1950s a resurgence by the auto manufacturers enabled them to create the most eccentric and extravagant automobiles of all time. Fierce competition between designers from General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and independents such as Packard all turned to one car builder nestled firmly in America's bustling automotive mecca to help design the most elaborate prototype and concept cars ever: Creative Industries of Detroit.

Author Leon Dixon's comprehensive account chronicles the greatest automotive achievements constructed at Creative Industries of Detroit. The careers of the company's founder, Fred Johnson, and his successor, Rex Terry, are examined to show how two former Chrysler employees led the most diverse automotive firm in all of Detroit. Dream cars created and examined in great detail include the Ford Atmos-FX, Mercury XM-800, Dodge Granada, Packard Balboa, Packard Panthers, Packard Request, Ford Mystere, Corvette Corvair, Dodge Daytona, Plymouth Superbird, Delorean, and many more. An amazing amount of hardware was constructed, each make separate from the other, and with a high level of secrecy.

Creative Industries of Detroit: The Untold Story of Detroit's Secret Concept Car Builder offers the most exhaustive and complete account of the 40-plus-year history creating dream, prototype, concept, and one-off cars from Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1950 Presidential Lincoln Limousine to the 1993 Mustang Mach III concept cars. This all-inclusive book is the first-ever on the subject, and features behind-the-scenes images and interviews never published before.

thus the author can offer only his best guess or speculation on what really transpired
By David W. Temple
This is a book I pre-ordered many months ago and anxiously waited for its release. It was worth the wait. Leon Dixon has written an authoritative book on a subject that only he could have researched and written. His decades of involvement in the auto industry and curiosity about concept cars over the same time period have combined to give the reader as close to an insider's perspective as is possible to provide today. The files of Creative Industries have long been discarded, so even just a magazine article on the subject would have been impressive enough. Instead, the author has put together a book filled with extensive details. Unfortunately, with the passage of time there are mysteries which will likely linger until the end of time, thus the author can offer only his best guess or speculation on what really transpired. In other cases, there is great detail presented. For those who are fascinated by concept cars, this is a must-have book. The only complaints (and I will not knock a star off for these since these issues involve the publisher's constraints rather than a failure of the author) are the fact it is soft cover rather than hard cover and wish that whatever landed on the cutting room floor (there are ALWAYS cuts) could have made it into the book - in other words the subject matter deserved more pages for more photos and more information. I particularly enjoyed the sections detailing the Packard Panthers and Mopar concepts like the Chrysler Typhoon, Dodge Charger I and Charger II, and the Plymouth XP-VIP as well as coverage of Ford's Mystere.

Great History of a Little-Known Company That Built Cars You Have Never Seen
By George Holmes
Do you like cars? Ever see a concept car and think "Oh, wow that's neat"? Do you have an appreciation for mid 20th Century American history? Do you like a well-presented story with amazing never-before-seen pictures? Then you are going to really enjoy this book.

There is a ton of information here, and the author presents it in a story form which is never boring and always enlightening.
After reading the book quickly I am now going to go back and study every page. There is that much to learn here. The photographs are fantastic. This book will be on my side table by my reading chair for a long time.

Those dream cars we all admired
By Robert Zimmerman
This is an excellent book with information long time coming. As an official 'Car Nut" and a Packard historian I found information here that filled in a lot of gaps in my Packard researching. But, there is much more to this book then just Packard. He talks of 'Dream Cars' from Ford, Chrysler, GM, AMC and others, plus the people who designed and built them.A fascinating read.
I had a friend who owned a 1954 Packard Panther Show Car several years back and through this book I finally found that he had Panther No.1 of the 4 built. As soon s I heard about this book, I bought it without a second thought.

Early Marple
By Magnifying Glass
Except for the last story, the format for each story is the same: a small group of people entertain themselves, each time they meet, by having one of them tell a mystery and then the others try to solve it before hearing the solution. Unexpectedly, the elderly Miss Marple - better known for her knitting - manages to solve every one.

1. Retired Scotland Yard Commissioner, Sir Henry, tells of three who sat down to sup: two became ill - the third died.
2. An elderly parish clergyman tells of the death of a woman dressed as a Goddess.
3. Miss Marple's nephew tells of a man who may have known too much about the missing gold.
4. An artist tells of a scenic fishing village - perfect for painting and for murder.
5. A lawyer tells of a rich man who - just before he dies - makes a new will, and now, the new will is missing.
6. Miss Marple tells of the time when nearly everyone thought her niece Maple had murdered her husband.

7. Col. Bantry tells of the mysterious death of Mrs. Pritchard; curiously, the flowers in her room predicted it.
8. A doctor tells of the drowning of an English woman.
9. Sir Henry tells a story of former Secret Service agent who had fallen down the stairs.
10. Jane Marple tells of Mrs. Sanders being found face down; a sand-filled stocking lay nearby.
11. Mrs. Bantry tells of a vivacious girl who dies after supping on a meal featuring duck.
12. An actress tells a hazy story ... but it was clear to Miss Marple.

13. Miss Marple hands Sir Henry a note with the unlikely name of the murderer; now he is got to prove it.

Overall: the stories range from 3 to 5. Note: alternate title: "The Tuesday Club Murders."

A collection of Miss Marple stories where people discuss mysterious events that they have experienced and let the gathering try to solve them. Of course Miss Marple surprises every one every time. That is not a spoiler. I can't get enough Agatha Christie.

This is one of my favorite Agatha Christie books. Miss Marple's ability to understand human nature and deduce the culprit of the crime in these thirteen stories is a marvel to her family and friends. A very easy and pleasant reading experience.

Generative Design: Visualize, Program, and Create with Processing, by Hartmut Bohnacker, Benedikt Gross, Julia Laub

Generative design is a revolutionary new method of creating artwork, models, and animations from sets of rules, or algorithms. By using accessible programming languages such as Processing, artists and designers are producing extravagant, crystalline structures that can form the basis of anything from patterned textiles and typography to lighting, scientific diagrams, sculptures, films, and even fantastical buildings. Opening with a gallery of thirty-five illustrated case studies, Generative Design takes users through specific, practical instructions on how to create their own visual experiments by combining simple-to-use programming codes with basic design principles. A detailed handbook of advanced strategies provides visual artists with all the tools to achieve proficiency. Both a how-to manual and a showcase for recent work in this exciting new field, Generative Design is the definitive study and reference book that designers have been waiting for.

Review
"Beautifully illustrated... A fine introduction to generative design, filled with impressive examples and thankfully free of mind- numbing jargon... This book, equal parts art and textbook, is a valuable tool for both learning what exists and triggering new ideas." -- Steven Heller, The New York Times

"Fortunately, this insiders' how-to manual--by Hartmut Bohnacker, Benedikt Gro, and Julia Laub--contains loads of images and project profiles that together form a snapshot of the emerging field, which, in layman's terms, uses computer software and algorithms to generate visually exciting forms based on wildly complex concepts. The examples are rich and varied, ranging from a series that visualizes the air quality in various cities through virtual plant growth to a company logo that evolves through a kind of genetic recombination." --- Fast Company

Brilliant
By M. Tierney
Purchased this book after the German edition received rave reviews, now in an English translation. Those familiar with the Processing programming language probably need no introduction to this book, which is why there probably aren't any reviews (I dare say it doesn't need any). Still, I thought I would share an opinion.

This really is a beautiful book, a chest of techniques, methods and examples for working through the Processing language in the context of generative design. It's broken into two sections, with the first quarter of the book devoted to glossy full color 'plates' (if u like), surveying artists working in the generative design field. The rest of the book is dedicated to the Processing language, broken into two sections - basic examples, and then more complex methods.

The textbook pages have a non-glossy paper feel, which in and of themselves are a lovely texture and weight. In particular the binding of the book is something of an achievement - each page seems to fall gently over the next, leaving an open book that never needs much creasing or pressing to get the spine to lay flat. It is a heavy book, so probably best set next to a computer and a cup of coffee as you wade through the many examples.

It has to be said that the examples here are also (expectedly) beautiful, and unlike other programming books, they don't resort to a uninspiring aesthetic or to ugly sketches that no one wants to code. The sketches in this book are simply gorgeous and the kind of thing that probably made you want to get started with Processing in the first place.

The layout is also fantastic, with clear pointers to what each part of the code means and does, not to mention great full color representations of the sketches variations.

It's very hard for me not to recommend this book to any Processing programmer, or to any beginning Processing user, but I would have to say it might not be the best place to start. Having said that if you're interested in Processing or Generative Design you should go out and buy this book right now, it will leave you inspired for months and maybe years.

If you're just starting out then obviously the Processing website, examples and reference are a great starting point, as well as the Processing book by Reas & Fry. Following on from there Generative Design is like a more advanced text to the Reas and Fry version. Coupled with the examples provided on the companion website (freely downloadable), and the fact they upgraded the code in this English text to Processing 2.0 really make this text a current and useful tool.

And while I do love the artist pages at the beginning of the book I can't help but feel it wouldn't have been a loss if they were omitted. That's just a personal opinion (and my reason for 4 stars), as the focus for me here and the real attraction to the book is the 'textbook' part. If anything it would have made it more 'backpackable' - enabling it to be taken on the go with less strain on the shoulders.

I've yet to scour the book from end to end so this is more of general vibe of what it's like in person.

An absolutely fabulous text and a book worth keeping for life, that will certainly sit as a crucial text in the processing lineage along with DBN, Creative Code and the Processing Programming Handbook.

A great book for learning Processing
By R. Elder
I'm only 1/2 way through this book. I bought it (after hesitating due the the textbook high pricing) because it was highly recommended by students and instructors alike in a Intro to Computational Arts course I took recently online (via SUNY). It is a beautiful book and so well organized. The only knock is I wish in some cases it would give fuller code examples in some of the more involved sketches. I find by typing the code snippets as it is being broken down and explained is a very useful way to 'experience' and learn to code. I've been working with Processing for a long time and it is one of the best for both explaining the use of the Processing language and framing it with in context of Graphic Arts and design principles. Another example and perhaps a bit more accessible to people new to coding is Matt Perason's Generative Art: a practical guide using Processing. This book Generative Design: Visualize, Program and Create with Processing has been a great 'next' step (more advance) text and reference. It is organized by some basic design concepts (the use of color, shape, agents (interaction) and also has about 1/2 of the text devoted to Complex Methods (exploring randomness, noise, attractors, oscillation, etc). In the end this is a book I will go back to many many times and has been surprisingly well worth the price.

An all-around amazing book on generative design
By J. French
This is definitely one of my favorite books on yes, Processing - but also simply a beautifully designed book in its own right. It's even worthwhile simply as a collection of inspiring generative art, even if you have know interest in learning the code from a practical level. If you do however, you're in for even more of a treat, because the code examples are laid out beautifully. As a designer, it's amazingly refreshing to see educational material treated in a way that is both easy to understand, and aesthetically pleasing. The visual examples are diverse and inspiring, and the code is explained in a way that is relatively straightforward to understand. It's helpful if you have a fundamental understanding of Processing (or coding in general), but because it's broken apart so well, you don't need to understand everything to be able to grasp the core functionality.

There are other books that are better for teaching basic concepts in a methodical way (Daniel Shiffman does a great job with Learning Processing and then The Nature of Code), but this book is great to add to the collection for its variety of inspiring examples. Most of the works have walkthroughs of the code side by side, and the actual source code is available to download as well. If you're interested in Processing or generative art, I can't recommend this book enough.
