Sex Sells...But So Does Humor

As a general rule, I completely detest Big Pharma and everything involved with it. I could not help but make an exception when I read Hard Sell: Evolution of A Viagra Salesman.
I appreciated the author’s quick wit, humorous sarcasm and how his insatiable desire to do as little as possible somehow translated to working smarter, not harder (pun not intended). His writing style makes me feel like he is having a conversation where he has leaned in to share privileged (and juicy) information with me, resulting in a quick read and leaving me wanting just a bit more.
Books that become movies are usually butchered by Hollywood, and while Love and Other Drugs has certainly been “Hollywood-ized”, it is still similar enough to Hard Sell that it wasn’t ruined. The book is still better, though.

Funny, accurate and a great read!!

I have been meaning to watch "Love and Other Drugs" - the movie that this book inspired, especially after a recent sales meeting when a co-worked mentioned that all the fuss, hype and stunts reminded him of this movie!

But as I am on a reading kick right now, I decided to buy the book instead! I am glad I did! It was a fun, easy, entertaining read. Very engaging, funny and well written! But for me, the funniest part, was just how true this book was (Viagra part aside - I cannot validate that !)

Now, just to set the record straight, I have never worked for Pfizer, but I have worked in this industry! Unlike the author, I have not stayed in bed until 10 am while professing to work, nor have I paid someone to fill up my company car while I enjoy a cocktail or many on a beach; and I have never dipped into the company products - I think a lot of companies have measures in place these days to guard against that! Though I am sure this does go on!

But that aside, the details on the training had be spewing quotes to my husband who had listened to all of this before as I relayed my own tales of training! I almost died laughing at how the author had worked for such a completely different company, yet had experiences so similar to me..and the manager ride day!! I am sure every Pharma and Med Rep could relate to that!!

This is one of the most fun reads I have had in a while, though I recommend it to any reader...I really suggest this is a must read to anyone that has ever worked in this industry!

Astrology as a Path into Internal Depth/Self-Discovery

This book is a must-read and a must-have, both for practicing Astrologers and for any student of Astrology. Any reread will always catalyze fresh insights for the reader as Tracy Marks has succeeded in creating a dynamic and definitive work covering such topics as principles of depth astrology, the nodes of the moon, astrology and life purpose, dealing creatively with transits, the healing power of things lunar and unlocking one's potentials. In my opinion, The Astrology of Self-Discovery also contains one of the definitive pieces of writing on the planet Neptune, the subtitle of the chapter being aptly named "How to swim through cosmic waters" Ms. Marks explores Neptunian states of consciousness by helping the reader to work with the elusiveness of Neptunian experiences and possible resulting "fog" in very concrete and extremely useful ways. The Neptune worksheets are particularly helpful. In addition, her work on the nodes of the moon and their respective issues and lessons is outstanding; in fact, let me state again that I find this book to be one of the classics of Astrology. I urge you to have this book in your library!

Of my many books it is this one that I rely on most for communicating Astrological Principles to clients.
When you can give an example which touches some deep place within Astrology becomes that much more effective. The quotations and prose collected to illustrate these concepts gives you a head start to understanding non rational principles and the role they play in your life.
Always stressing the fact of your own self determination Tracy Marks helps set out some pointers to help you on your own inner journey.This book gives much food for thought.
The most important part of the book is the section of what Astrology can and connot do for you. Anyone visiting an Astrologer could do no better than using this book as a set of quality standards. If only our profession could be judged by the matterial here and not by the popular press. No practicing Astrologer should be without it

I came across this page when searching for some other astrology books and felt I should write a review.
It's been nearly fifteen years since I bought this book and it remains on my bookshelf, well-read and dog-eared from use over the years. It is wonderfully insightful, with practical and wise advice about handling planetary energies. I thoroughly recommend it, as well as Tracy's other books (particularly 'How to handle your T-square' - if you can get a hold of it).

Some Men just Know what it takes...

There's nothing simplistic about the female brain, body and soul- intricately divine and sublimely refined, it really does take a grand master in love to figure out what makes us Venuses...Swoon!

Betsy Prioleau presents us with the great seducers of all times to figure out what it is that makes some men really `get' what women want. From the very beginning, even the Greek gods, moved heaven and earth for love. But by far, the grandest of all lovers in history was Giacomo Casanova. The perfect ladies' man, Casanova captured women's minds, their heart, their fantasies and ultimately their soul. He was genuinely interested and completely devoted to pleasing women- he understood what they needed and wanted.

Betsy Prioleau's research brings us closer to the men in history and their captivating ways. The men she describes (tons of historical figures, which include Voltaire, Gabriele D'Annunzio, the 18th c. duc de Richelieu, to name a few- and the modern ones as well- Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger and Woody Allen too!)-all of them devoted to being ladies' men.

SWOON grabs you from the very beginning. It's everything you want to know about the great lovers in history. The writing is of superb and impeccable taste. Prioleau takes us through the history of love in flowing chapters that reveal what women already know and what the most intuitive men are fortunate enough to unravel. SWOON is filled with these great seducers who have mastered their art and understood the cue by becoming completely enthralled with love for their lady, their muse.

I particularly enjoyed how the author takes the art of love and the historical seducers through an almost scientifc analysis- but the stuff she writes is incredibly interesting! There is nothing dry about this book- a definite page turner that will keep the facts coming as you're kept in attention by the quick pace and sharp clever writing (...guarantees a glued smile on your face;)

Brilliantly researched, witty and deliciously sexy, SWOON is recommended to all aspiring seducers and the lucky women who will undoubtedly and most willingly swoon into their bliss.

Betsy Prioleau isn’t merely aiming to entertain; her goal is to get to the heart of what has made the men who wommen desire tick

At first glance, SWOON looks like light entertaining reading. But author Betsy Prioleau isn’t merely aiming to entertain; rather, her goal is to get to the heart of what has made the men who women desire --- and swoon over --- tick. She quickly dispels expectations of text that is mere fluff with an almost academic presentation of a number of historic Casanovas and the varied qualities among them that made them what they were. She dives right into her narrative, beginning with a modern (and unknown) lady-killer. She digs to get to the root of his secrets before drawing the reader onto a path of discovering the “It” quality that makes some men such revelatory seducers.
SWOON is not a dating or pick-up guide, but it does provide some insight to those reading it for advice. It turns out that while many great lady-killers throughout history have possessed some of the characteristics Prioleau details, it is unnecessary to have all of them. This undoubtedly will be a comfort to modern men who aren’t great dancers or poets. In fact, there are really only a few qualities that are necessary to bring a man to the fore of seduction. While cooking and expert wordplay are valuable, they are expendable. Caring, attention and sincerity are found in Prioleau’s champions --- and they are the keys to being a one-in-a-million lover.
Prioleau covers her bases; she includes information from evolutionary theory, literature, history, popular culture, and primary sources (often in the form of interviews with men who have been identified by anonymous women as Lotharios). For those reading the book for more than its entertainment value, the credibility her research loans the work is a boon. It is also rather unusual to encounter a book that is enjoyable on both sensual and cerebral levels.
In spite of her extensive evidence and convincing rhetoric, Prioleau’s account is prone to a couple of pitfalls. This reviewer found her narrative to be contradictory at times. She comes out swinging against the evolutionary theory that claims women are looking for physical specimens to fulfill the provider role of the square-shouldered Ur-Man. Yet she is willing to consider that the emphasis women put on intelligence and artistic pursuits have caused the development of these skills within the male sex. She returns again and again to some historic figures (such as Franz Liszt, the original Casanova, and Gabriele D’Annunzio), which makes some of her points start to feel like anecdotal evidence rather than the widespread patterns she purports them to be.
One can feel that Prioleau reduces the individual female into a single amorphous being --- all desiring the same thing (or slew of things) from men. Of course, the knowledge that she wrote an earlier book on the female version of this archetypal character, called SEDUCTRESS, helps dampen this objection. And the pleasure the book offers proves valuable enough to make the suspension of this complaint worthwhile.
The best part of SWOON is that Prioleau does not demand complete comprehension or revelation. There is a certain dread in reading a book that categorizes what women want. It would be easy to go too far one way or the other; to tell the reader something obvious or to suggest something unbelievable. Either way, the results would prove to be a decided turn-off. Instead, she closes with the rather uplifting idea that really anyone could be a ladies' man --- that it doesn’t take great wealth, good looks, or other typically sighed-after characteristics. Rather, it seems that men must learn to trust their own instincts before they can love a woman as she should be loved. Personally, I think that this is applicable to both genders, which makes SWOON all the more valuable.

When you scratch the surface, there's more surface.

The author struggles to build a coherent structure. Sometimes the chapters are point-counterpoint, sometimes they are lists of unconnected attributes. There was no central theme of "what makes women swoon" and the reader instead has to wade through repetitive tautologies. An example would be "Mr. X was a champion balloonist in 18th century Paris whose dapper appearance wooed the ladies" and then two pages later "Mr. Y was a hideous, poor mongrel and had thirteen mistresses." The men are swoon-inducing because they are, evidently. No book that includes "And Why Women Love Them" in the title can ever be allowed to use the phrase je ne sais quoi when describing a man's appeal. If you're admitting that you have no clue why a certain man was a famous seducer, then please don't write the book until you figure it out.

Finally! Practical tools for getting real business results from training

Business leaders are accountable for allocating funds to improve business performance. But when it comes to training dollars, leaders question if they can really leverage these costs. Is training just something done away from the job, out of their control, and is over when the event ends? "Getting Your Money's Worth" candidly answers these questions. Business leaders are accountable for getting value from training dollars, and their targeted involvement will exponentially affect the business results achieved through the learning process. This book not only holds leaders accountable, but also provides practical information and tools to use each step of the way.

I found the format clever and intuitive. Half the book is for managers, and it issues a strong call for managers to take responsibility for learning's value. Flip the book over and you have targeted guidance for participants of training, helping them to truly own the outcomes of their learning. Both sections contain shaded text boxes throughout, with background information such as research findings and FAQs, making it easy to dig into details if you want, or skip over the nonessentials without losing continuity. The font sizes are easy on the eyes, pages stay open like a workbook, and the content has a straightforward flow.

In the manager section, the authors remind us that accountability for learning investments isn't new work for managers. They're already accountable for getting results through people - they just might not be getting the results they need. The book suggests a three-stage approach to leveraging training: Be More Up-Front, Be More Engaged, and Be More Results-Driven. After reading this section, I believe managers will have the process and tools to deepen their expectations and involvement in learning initiatives. They'll also have the confidence to hold meaningful conversations with learners about driving business value.

The participant portion of the book jumpstarts learner accountability with this statement: "Whenever you attend a training program, performance expectations go up." The authors present three keys for getting training value: Get Ready, Get Engaged, and Get Results. Here, the participant learns there's much more to do than just showing up for a training event. In fact, they will personally perform better and be more engaged by following the recommended process. After reading the Participants portion, I had a much broader view of the opportunities for personal growth from learning events. The worksheets are concise and help keep the process propelling forward.

This is not a book to keep on a shelf - you'll find yourself marking up the worksheets, bending pages, having "aha!" moments and (most importantly) taking action. The book provides a link and password to a website for premium content. I just checked it out and found a good selection of job aids and sample worksheets, as well as case studies and additional content.

The authors of "Getting Your Money's Worth" are true advocates of getting business results from learning. As a business leader responsible for key learning initiatives, I will be implementing the practical advice and tools provided in this book to drive value for our organization. My next step is to get this book into the hands of the people who matter most - the managers and learning participants who deliver our business results.

Required Reading for Workplace Learning Excellence

For years, Nancy Maresh and I have promoted two essential concepts with our corporate and government clients: start engagement with adult students well upstream and continue follow through long after training in order to extend the impact of learning events. And, fully exploit the relationship of each learner with their own supervisor, since the quality of that involvement around training and development is the number #1 indicator of successful transfer from learning to improved job performance.

With great intuition and solid research as to brain function processes and workplace realities, the authors of Getting Your Money's Worth have created a handy and easy to use guide for both elements of the effectiveness tandem: the learner and the supervisor.

In tough economic times, training and development budgets can all too easily be cut, but I have a hunch this book will produce such great value and tangible results, executives will require the use of this two part tool to fully substantiate their sustainment of learning and performance efforts.

Nita Rutkosky began teaching business education courses at Pierce College in Puyallup, Washington, in 1978. Since then she has taught a variety of software applications to students in postsecondary Information Technology certificate and degree programs. In addition to this title, she has co-authored the Marquee Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Signature Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010, 2007 and 2003, and Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3. She has also authored textbooks on keyboarding, WordPerfect, desktop publishing, and voice recognition for Paradigm Publishing. Denise Seguin has been teaching at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario since 1986. She has taught a variety of software applications to adult learners in Continuing Education courses and learners in postsecondary Information Technology diploma programs. In addition to this textbook, Ms. Seguin has authored and co-authored many computer application textbooks for Paradigm Publishing, Inc. Audrey Roggenkamp has been teaching courses in the Business Information Technology department at Pierce College in Puyallup, including keyboarding, skill building, and Microsoft Office programs. A good idea that falls apart on closer examination

First of all I would like to say that I do believe this is a "Genuine" book that has been written by somobdy who really believes the subject material as opposed to someone trying to make a quick buck. But equally in joining Numerology with Tarot the Writer (in this publication at least) evidently hasn't thought things through very well.
In simple terms what you find in these pages is something like this - say for example the cards that are Numbered "Nine", 5 + 4 = 9 so the Writer goes into great detail about the meanings of Five and Four in Numerology thus revealing the meaning of the card. All well and good but what about 7 + 2 - that equals Nine too. Or what about 3 + 6? Or 8 + 1? You see the problem here? Why has the author settled on this particular equation while ignoring the others?

Another basic fallacy that the Writer has made is the number of the cards in History. They make a great deal about the earliest Fourteenth century origin of Tarot Cards and why the number was set at 78 cards - but of course it WASN'T set at 78, this was a development with late Eighteenth Century Occultists - most of whom admitted later in life that it was all a hoax anyway. The Cary Yale certainly wasn't 78 cards. The Visconte Sforza has had the "Missing" cards reproduced in the 1970's but the general consensus among experts is that they never existed anyway. The Minchiate is not 78 cards, and a number of others, again you get the problem here.

There is some value here as alternative interpretatios to think about but there is so many holes in the Writers theory that discretion needs to be employed when using this method.

The single best book on Tarot I've seen

This is a book that not only tells you what the Tarot cards mean--in plain English--but also gives a concise, credible explanation for why each card means what she says it means. She draws heavily on Jungian psychology in her interpretation of the Major Arcana, and on numerology (filtered through folklore and mythology) for the Minor Arcana, but in both cases she refers directly to what's actually on the cards--helping the reader see them as a coherent symbolic system, not just mysterious pictures. (She mostly uses the Rider-Waite deck, but gives an extended justification for her choice, comparing it symbolically with other popular decks.) I don't know that I necessarily agree with every one of her interpretations--but that's actually one of the book's great strengths. After reading it, I felt that I understood enough of what was going on in the Tarot to begin to have my own opinions. Hamaker-Zondag, who's a noted astrologer, includes a chapter on attempts to combine Tarot and astrology--and concludes that it may not be possible. She also includes straightforward, common-sense advice on how to conduct a reading and lay out the cards--instructions that are far more helpful than those in other Tarot books I've read. The one thing I don't like about this book is the title. It sounds like it's inviting you to join a cult. It's really one of the most feet-on-the-ground introductions you're likely to find.

Really insightful

I'm what you might call an intermediate tarot apprentice, so I've been reading several tarot books lately. This is by far the best book I've encountered for someone with a proficient level who is seeking a deeper understanding. Whether or not you're familiar with C.G. Jung's work, you'll find this book insightful and invaluable on your journey of self-discovery.

Hamaker-Zondag illustrates the importance of visual symbols as the language of the unconscious, thus arguing it is inefficient to disregard the artwork with your nose buried in the book. She compares the imagery of 6 different decks as an example. She explains the Jungian archetypal significance for numbers, which was MOST illuminating. She also gives well-balanced meanings for each of the cards, after having so thoroughly explained why such meanings are associated with each card.

I highly recommend this book. (But perhaps not so much for beginners).

About the Author
Joseph S. Wilson is assistant professor of biology at Utah State University and has been studying bees and wasps for more than a decade. Olivia Messinger Carril received her PhD in plant biology from Southern Illinois University and has been studying bees and the flowers they visit for nearly twenty years.

The Bees Knees And Much More

This is an extraordinary new book! A must-read. Bees in Your Backyard is much more than a field guide. It introduces the natural history of bees along with the knowledge needed to identify their distinguishing morphological characters along with an innovative key to the major groups. All of the major genera anyone is likely to come across in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico are here. I would have liked the distribution maps to be a bit larger, but this book is jam-packed with great information that will delight readers. The quality of the hundreds of photographic images by Wilson along with other contributors are outstanding. Wilson is a master of the macro photography technique of placing bees on white backgrounds, which makes them come alive as species portraits. I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind reference to our native bees for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students along with naturalists and gardeners who want to identify and understand our diverse bee faunas. Get this book, you won't be disappointed.

This is an excellent introduction to the bees of North America

This is an excellent introduction to the bees of North America. Well-written and comprehensive, it provides general information of bee morphology, biology and behavior. Then, it covers ALL the families and genera of bees in NA, what their identifying characters are, and provides detailed information of the biology of each genus. Great illustrations, and wonderful photographs of live bees. This won't allow you to identify most bees to species, but given that there are c. 4,000 species in NA, that is beyond the scope of the book. This book is a classic, there's nothing else like it. It will do more to increase the (interested) general public's knowledge about the diversity of bee than anything currently available. A must-have.

Excellent for the enthusiastic bee lover

Wonderful new book that provides a wealth of information on bee biology, habitat requirements and, especially, bee identification. We are bee photographers and biologists, though not bee experts, and this is perfect for us. We have several other general books on bees but this one is far better than others for those who really want to learn more about bee families and genera of the US and Canada.
