The survivors have lost much. Friends, children, parents.
Ken is gone.

Now, they must continue their struggle to survive, more lost and alone than ever.

They are lost, alone, frightened. Nowhere to run to, and nowhere to hide from the enemies that stalk them... or the old friends who still hunt them.

It is only a matter of time not a question of if they will die, only when.
Not a question of if they will be killed, only where they will be buried... and how long their bodies will stay that way. Because in this new world nothing is sacred. Life is cheap, and death is just another doorway to a living Hell on Earth.

Can't Stop Loving this Series
By Ellen Coffman
I have to give credit to Mr. Collings. He has managed to hook me completely with this series. And yes, I am going to ultimately end up paying the full price of a hardcover book to get to the end of this series. Don't care - it's worth it. It is just a wonderfully fun, funny and inventive zombie/alien series. I actually enjoyed this installment more than some of the previous ones, despite the longer wait for its release. And it was a longer wait. I had to actually go back and reread installment 5 because I forgot some what occurred.

I felt I actually did get some answers in this installment - and some unexpected and nice twists as well. Looking forward to the next installment.

Excellent Fast Paced Zombie-Munching Fun
By Charlotte Acha
Michaelbrent Collings did it again!

He created a fast-paced ride through an even faster collapsing world and left me dangling wanting more.

I did feel the story was a bit TOO fast and far too short. There were some things that I think could have slowed down and been developed more, rather than to put out a book to feed the fans who have been waiting. Some things were expected, but there were some twists there that had me hanging on to every word.

Will I buy #7? Yes indeed. Michaelbrent Collings is one of my favorite authors and honestly? Your fans can wait an extra month or two or three to really put some "meat" in the story!

awesome I can't get enough of MBC.
By R. L. Easterwood
Fast paced. Not predictable. Omg I could not put it down. When does the next book in this series come out? Not your normal zombies here. More like zombies on steroids. The only thing I didn't like was it wasn't long enough. I gave it a five because all I could think about was when was the next time I would have time to finish the book. I made time. Highly recommend for horror, zombie, action lovers.

Beyond: Our Future in Space, by Chris Impey

“Expansive and enlightening. . . . Impey packs his prose with wonderful anecdotes and weird factoids.”―New York Times Book Review

Human exploration has been an unceasing engine of technological progress, from the first homo sapiens to leave our African cradle to a future in which mankind promises to settle another world. Beyond tells the epic story of humanity leaving home―and how humans will soon thrive in the vast universe beyond the earth.

A dazzling and propulsive voyage through space and time, Beyond reveals how centuries of space explorers―from the earliest stargazers to today’s cutting-edge researchers―all draw inspiration from an innate human emotion: wanderlust. This urge to explore led us to multiply around the globe, and it can be traced in our DNA.

Today, the urge to discover manifests itself in jaw-dropping ways: plans for space elevators poised to replace rockets at a fraction of the cost; experiments in suspending and reanimating life for ultra-long-distance travel; prototypes for solar sails that coast through space on the momentum of microwaves released from the Earth. With these ventures, private companies and entrepreneurs have the potential to outpace NASA as the leaders in a new space race.

Combining expert knowledge of astronomy and avant-garde technology, Chris Impey guides us through the heady possibilities for the next century of exploration. In twenty years, a vibrant commercial space industry will be operating. In thirty years, there will be small but viable colonies on the Moon and Mars. In fifty years, mining technology will have advanced enough to harvest resources from asteroids. In a hundred years, a cohort of humans born off-Earth will come of age without ever visiting humanity’s home planet. This is not the stuff of science fiction but rather the logical extension of already available technologies.

Beyond shows that space exploration is not just the domain of technocrats, but the birthright of everyone and the destiny of generations to come. To continue exploration is to ensure our survival. Outer space, a limitless unknown, awaits us.

Review
“One of the most accessible accounts of the history of rockets and space travel I have ever read . . . entertaining and informative.” (John Gribbin - Wall Street Journal)

“Bold, elegant and engaging.” (Nature)

“Philosophical . . . lively.” (Discover)

“Chris Impey manages to rejuvenate that ‘Space Is Our Future’ feeling that pervaded human culture a half century ago. A needed reminder that, today, not enough of us are looking up, and even fewer among us are doing anything about it.” (Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History)

“A must-read for anyone interested in the fate of the human race and our bright future among the stars. Chris Impey shows how our efforts to expand beyond Earth are part of the same biological drive that made humans spread their habitat across the face of the Earth.” (Ben Bova, bestselling author and president emeritus of the National Space Society)

“A rare look into the future through a wide-angle lens. With hope and skill, Impey has an optimistic vision in which we finally, and permanently, break the bonds of Earth.” (David H. Levy, discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and twenty-two other comets)

“So much fun to read that it is hard to think of it as a major reference work on space travel―history, current status, and the wild blue yonder. But it is!” (Owen Gingerich, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)

About the Author
Chris Impey is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Arizona. In addition to his critically acclaimed books How It Began and How It Ends, he has written two astronomy textbooks and has won many teaching awards. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.

An Overview of Space, From All Angles
By Alastair Browne
This is an overview of space exploration, past, present, and future. This is not a textbook, nor is it a book on space technology or business. It isn’t meant to be. What it is is to give you a view on space from a historical and realistic point of view, the dreams of space exploration from our earliest times, in a positive manner that is hopefully to be our next step in our evolution of civilized man. It will not progress in a straight line, and there will be setbacks as well as unexpected obstacles in setting out on this new endeavor. It will not be progressive as computer technology, where, one buys the latest computer, and a few years later it becomes obsolete because of a fast paced technology. Space technology, as we have learn since Sputnik, back in 1957, is not fast paced, and it never has been. In many cases, we, being not only the U.S. but Russia as well, are still using 1960s technology.
In a manner of speaking, this book tells you why, and it is not the fault of any country or entity such as NASA. We went on a fast paced race to the Moon from President Kennedy’s announcement in 1961 to the landing in 1969, and continued to pursue it until 1972, and then stopped, in pursuit of other space projects; Skylab, the space shuttle. We slowed down because our interest waned, as any new venture does with the public at large. Privatization is now in the launching business, and is set to expand in other industries.
Chris Impey’s Beyond is divided into four sections, each beginning with part of a fictitious tale, all being one story, of an adventurer setting out on the frontier a century or more from now, ending, in the last section, of landing on a planet orbiting another star. The first three sections deal in the past, present, and future, and the fourth covers a century or two from now when we may set out for the stars (titled “Beyond”).
When man set out from his birthplace in Africa to wander Asia, Europe, and then the Americas in the span of over one hundred thousand years, to a tale of a Chinese government official, Wan Hu, tying rockets (fireworks) to his chair to launch himself into space. They never found him, but there were explosions in the sky, to the 20th century with a brief summery on the launch of Sputnik, the Apollo Moon landings, and the space shuttle.
It is in the second section, justifiably called “present,” that gives the run-down on what is happening now, with Chapter 4 optimistically called, “Revolution is Coming.” This section first describe NASA’s low period after the Moon landings ended, to how and why its budget fell from five percent to 0.5% of the federal budget, and what NASA subsequently did. The history of airplane and space flight is covered here, and then fast forwards to the present, with the advent of space tourism, and what is required to participate.
The entrepreneurs, from Burt Rutan of Virgin Galactic to Elon Musk of Space X are all here, along with the financial problems and solutions of setting up one’s business.
Many little known facts, of all aspects of space travel are mentioned, from space sickness to government red tape (regulations, and fees) in setting up your own business. If one can handle all this, the next challenge would be to figure out how to deal with the space frontier itself, i.e. how much fuel is required to get to a satellite or space station in low Earth orbit, how much will it cost, how cheap can you make it and still turn out a profit. Note, this does not necessarily point out what space has to offer for you to make money. The book merely states the complexities of doing so; what is required, how much will it cost, what are the risks. Space technology is compared to other high tech industries, but also points out that it is not progressing at the same speed.
Many experiments have been mentioned, such as Biosphere 2, where the media hyped it, but turned out to be a failure because oxygen ran down and had to be resupplied from outside, but it also covered on what has succeeded in that experiment, and how one can correct the mistakes and capitalize on its successes.
Of course, there has also been a lot of government waste (of money) in the space program, which was why the entrepreneurs are now coming in and picking up the slack. A shuttle launch costed $1.5 billion. A SpaceX launch costs $10 million, and decreasing.
There is the future. China, of course, will be a participant. Settlements on the Moon, colonies on Mars, and what has been proposed has been covered. Will it be that simple? Mars One is a project to put people on Mars permanently. What will be the psychological effects?
New propulsion systems such as solar sailing, and it various types, are explained.
Lastly, we hope to go to the stars. But, complex technology is involved, requiring energy at least 10 times as much as the entire Earth presently produces in order to travel one tenth the speed of light.
The writings of visionaries are featured, from Gerard O’Neill’s space habitats to Freeman Dyson’s “Dyson Sphere,” along with honorable mentions from prominent science fiction writers.
This is a book that covers man’s history of wandering the Earth, his dreams of traveling to space since the Middle Ages, the present accomplishments, and what is being done now from both governments and entrepreneurs, and what is required to finally achieve this dream. It is possible, but not with risks and dangers, new advances in technologies, the travelers who are able to physically and psychologically handle the venture, and, of course, lots of money.

Release your inner astronaut
By Paul Mastin
If you have a taste for space and a desire to fly beyond the moon, Chris Impey will whet your appetite and leave you wishing for the future to hurry up and get here. Impey, an astronomer at the University of Arizona, lays out the current state of space exploration and speculates about our possible futures in Beyond: Our Future in Space.

Generations ago, mankind began spreading out from the cradle of civilization in Africa. Tribes migrated to the unknown, covering distances that took them decades or centuries to travel. In a similar way, we are poised to explore worlds beyond our own. Impey is realistic about the timing: it ain't happening anytime soon. But he's also optimistic about the drive and the technology to get started.

The Space Shuttle program demonstrated the weakness of a bloated government bureaucracy looking to space. The Shuttle "launch rate ended up ten times lower than originally planned and the cost per launch twenty times higher," not to mention two of the five shuttles blowing up. Impey compares the early, government and military dominance of the space program to the early days of the Internet. "The government and military have deep enough pockets to develop technology with no eye on profit or return on investment. Once the field has been prepared and tilled, the private sector can scatter seed and see what grows best." The moon landings and the Space Shuttle program tilled the field. Now private companies are moving us forward to space.

Impey covers a lot of ground (and space!) in Beyond. He's not shy about discussing the logistical, practical limitations we live under now that seem to make interplanetary travel and colonization a pipe dream, but he writes, "We have the technology and the means to live and work in space, gain a permanent toehold off-Earth, and explore the Solar System and beyond. No laws of physics stand in our way." He envisions a near future of a commercial space industry, of colonies on the Moon and Mars within 30 years, asteroid mining in 50 years, and, in a century, a generation of people who are born in space and live out their lives off Earth.

Impey's vision is a great combination of science and speculation, of dreaming and reporting. I hope the children of today can catch his vision and reach heights never reached.

Space obstacles
By Dr Adam Weiss
Author Chris Impey- Beyond allows readers to understand the challenges ahead for any space program that we have in place right now. While the authors breaks down in detail the vast obstacles involved in getting a human past a certain distance in space- fuel type for one was very interesting to read. There is the radiation factor and its toll on the human body. It seems space provides a hard task of projection man kind past the moon at least for one to return safely. Highly recommend to those interested in space travel and the people making headline today trying to get us out there faster.

Base of the Pyramid 3.0: Sustainable Development Through Innovation and EntrepreneurshipFrom Greenleaf

The annual income of well over 4 billion people--approximately 60% of all humanity--is less than $1,500. The term Base of the Pyramid was first coined by Stuart L. Hart and C.K. Prahalad in 2002 and has become synonymous with both the method by which we can more effectively address poverty and the opportunity that exists in a multi-trillion dollar market. A whole new lexicon has emerged to describe this phenomenon, including new buzzwords and catch phrases like inclusive business, opportunities for the majority, sustainable livelihoods, pro-poor business, and social business and thousands of new businesses, institutions and investment funds have been set up.

In this ground-breaking new book, Stuart L. Hart and Fernando Casado Caeque have worked with members of the BoP Global Network to shake the tree, look objectively at what has happened since 2002, highlight why earlier applications of BoP haven't worked and propose new objectives and ways of working to formulate more sustainable solutions.

The book challenges the reader and organizations to think about the mindset and purpose across whole organizations, open innovation rather than simply co-creation, and a complete review of the innovation eco-system.

Through this book, practitioners will gain a clearer insight into which business models can work within different communities to ensure a sustainable transition to improved local economies. Equally, the book is a must read for researchers and students in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainable development and environmental management.

Review
“Base of the Pyramid 3.0 is a must read for anyone that wants to understand the evolution, challenges and opportunities of BoP.

For many companies, creating value from the half of the world's population who live on less than $8 a day is unimaginable. This book provides insight into how companies with purpose and ambition can be profitable by creating sustainable livelihoods with sustainable natural capital.” (John Gardner, Chief Sustainability Officer)

“This insightful book recognizes the importance of continuing to push our thinking about the BoP domain. Fernando Casado Caneque, Stuart Hart and their colleagues offer valuable contributions on a range of topics crucial to enhancing our understanding of how to build successful BoP businesses.” (Ted London, Senior Research Fellow and Director, Base of the Pyramid Initiative)

"In this landmark book, Stuart Hart and Fernando Casado Caeque assemble a roadmap for businesses that seek greater purpose. Businesses have become our last best hope of finding solutions to intractable challenges such as, among other global problems, creating prosperity for the four billion people who live on less than $8 per day. The authors draw on the considerable but mixed track record of BoP innovations since Stuart Hart and C.K. Prahalad’s original article in 2002. In-depth case studies of failure, such as CleanStar Mozambique, are used to draw lessons from what has not worked and to propose new rules of the road. This is not just another feel-good book about the business opportunity to create a better world. It offers a collective voice of experience with specific, actionable ideas for an inclusive business agenda. A much needed book that will be required reading in all my business courses." (Chris Laszlo, PhD)

About the Author

The Devil's Own Luck (The Tipperary Trilogy Book 3), by William Patterson

Mid-eighteenth century Ireland is in turmoil. The Catholic Church, the country’s single unifying force, has been torn asunder, gutted by the Penal Laws imposed upon it by the invading regime. Corruption is rife. Violence erupts spontaneously. Ireland’s people have lost their way, their country has lost its conscience and is now in grave danger of losing its soul. The traditions which have been the backbone of the land for centuries are being discarded and abandoned.

In this, the third and final book in the Tipperary Trilogy, we find the rural community of Gortalocca in its death throes. Hogan’s, the village store and bar, has closed its doors … Roisin’s eldest son, Robbie, having finally run the family business into the ground. Work is almost impossible to find. Roisin’s younger son, Mikey, and his life-long friend Jamie Clancy, struggle to feed their families. To add to the despair, a devastating fire sweeps through, destroying their blacksmith shop and what was left of Hogan’s.

Possible salvation comes in a strange guise. Out of the distant past, a mysterious man arrives from America, along with his son and a black slave. This man is to offer deliverance to Gortalocca but the village will have to pay dearly for it.

Interesting enough, but very one-sided
By Anabelle Bernard Fournier
Another book I started a while ago and just finished, ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Income Figure isn't very long or very complicated; it makes for a good, quick read about blogging.

If you don't know ProBlogger, you should, at least if you're interested in blogging: it's the go-to blog about blogs. Yes, I love meta and the word "blog" will come frequently in this post.

In any case, as I left the academic world and decided to try something new, I thought about starting blogs for money. I love to write, I seem to be pretty good at managing and producing content, and I'm sure there are things I could share with the world... for a profit.

The book goes through the three steps of making money from blogs:

Setting up a blog
Making it popular
Earning money from it

The most important lesson I got from the book is the importance of choosing a niche; it helps build a loyal community, get expertise and great, contextualized advertising. However, except for the generic "start by identifying your own interests, passions, and energy levels for topics", there's not a lot of direction about how to choose a profitable niche. There also isn't much about search engine optimization (which I fortunately covered in another book) or about keyword research. However, a lot of the things that Rowse and Garrett hold important (niching, ads, etc) aren't necessarily the be-all and end-all of popular blogging.

The one section I found really useful was the monetizing section where the authors explain all about choosing the right ads, affiliate programs and other revenue streams. While I'm sure there's more complete info on this (it could be worth an entire book), it was a good introduction and gave me guidelines if I ever have to do something like this myself.

In general I found ProBlogger interesting and informative, even if it doesn't delve too deep into any of the topics the authors touch on. Even the case study in the last chapter lacked depth-I would have liked to know more about how he managed his content, built a community, etc. But as an introduction to professional blogging, it does the job.

Finally, a Winner
By Jayne Georgette
There are so many books about blogging that you could fill an entire library with nothing else, but. The problem with most of these books is, that they are either incomplete and you would need to read a chapter or two from each in order to get the complete picture about blogs and blogging; or so poorly written (put together in a rush) that people never finish to read them because they lose interest.

When I learned about this book a few years back I purchased it because I heard so many good things about both authors, Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett. Darren is a full-time blogger that makes six-figure income himself through his famous Problogger blog and the highly successful digital photography school (DPS). I believe there isn't anybody who is somebody on the Internet that did not hear about Darren.

Chris is also a full-time blogger, an Internet marketing coach, and most of all the creator of a "five-star" course on authority blogging.

People purchase things from people they trust. What other method is the best to gain someone's trust then demonstrating your extensive knowledge and expertise in the topic through blogging or published books. It is not enough, however, that a person declares that he/she is an expert; people that read the person's book and/or blog, attend a course, Webinar or workshop that he/she leads are the ones that need to add the adjective next to the name of the "expert", or affirm the person's true expertise.

This is where Chris Garrett comes in. His "Authority Blogging" course is the best on the Internet, because he gives his own expertise without holding anything back. If you really want to succeed in earning a nice living from blogging, you must enroll into Chris's program. You will be 99% there.

I almost forgot that I am writing a book review so I need to go back to the book; but the thing is what makes a book a "Best Seller?" - experienced professionals that write well. This is the case with this book.

It is not everyday that you can find a book with that much value; therefore, the first thing I want to do is to thank the authors to create such a valuable reference book. The second thing one wants to do is, what I am doing right now (writing and publishing a review); otherwise the only way people will learn about this book by visiting my house and seeing one next to each of my computers and another one in a room where I can close myself for a quiet hour (get my meaning?).

The book is not only well written and easy to read, but one of the most comprehensive one about blogging and how you can create a nice living from it if you will follow the authors' advise. Did you ask yourself the following lately: "I'd like to know everything about blogging but I do not know whom to ask." Well, your source is here. Read this book.

The authors start immediately with the theme of the book: "How you can make money with blogging." You learn as soon as you open the first page about what it means to blog for money, what you need to do in order to start earning a living from the early stages of the blog and how you can measure the blog's success. So, if that is all what you are interested to know, you do not need to read further; but I would not suggest doing that, because you would lose lots of valuable information.

Once you know the basics (from Chapter 1) you start to learn about the details in the Chapters that follow. For instance I had no idea what CPC, CPM and CPS means. I read about them when I was seeking to find information about advertising on my blog, but for some reason people thought that I should know these acronyms.

There are other plenty of useful information that I learned about them by reading this book, such as what is affiliate marketing, guest posting, content marketing, relationship marketing, buying and selling blogs and other forms of income-producing methods. How about "sticky blogs?" Do you know what they mean? I did not know prior to reading the book.

Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the details for setting up your blog correctly and how to populate it with articles that people want to read.

Chapters 5 and 6 are the meat and potato about making money, but without promoting it through social media and other known promoting techniques mentioned above it will not happen; that is where Chapters 7 and 8 come in. (BTW I read these two chapters twice already).

By reading Chapter 9 you will learn about social media, an important part of your promotion efforts, and in Chapter 10 the authors giving you the secrets of successful blogs. If nothing else, just this chapter worth your time and expense - nowhere else you will learn these important materials. You know that the best way to assure your success is following what worked. Learning from successful people is an invaluable opportunity.

As you read each chapter, pay attention to the organization of each. You could basically learn the important things you need to know in order to build a successful blog just by reading the subheadings, the bulleted lists, the samples, the tips and exercises that scattered through each chapter.

You also have to understand that most of the things the authors are teaching you they have done it personally; it is all based on their experience. They are blatantly allowing you to copy them. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel when they are already invented it.

In summary, whether you're new to blogging, contemplating to start one, or just launched one that is not moving toward the right direction, you will definitely find plenty of useful information for all three instances. You do not need to be a technical wizard or a marketing guru to understand and learn the ropes. The book walks you through smoothly from the very basics of blogging to a more advanced business user. You need this resource for your success.

Inspirational Fluff with Little Groundbreaking or "Secret" Content
By Morgan S Gibbs
In my spare time, I am creating niche websites to supplement my income so I can go back to school for Physics. I designed my first site by hand, hired a professional designer for the logo, and was thinking about implementing a blog into the main content of the website to increase hits to my website from searches. I have a degree in Information Systems, can program websites, and have a lot of technical knowledge, but have never written a blog before. I approach things from a technical perspective, and when I want to learn how to do something well, I do my research and read everything I can from experts in the field. I heard about this book from Pat Flynn's site, and most people (judging from the reviews) have generally raved about the last two editions. I waited for the new edition so I could have the most up-to-date material. Perhaps there were some new methods to making money blogging I was not aware of, or perhaps the author had some newer original ways of making money from blogs? Nope, Neither.

For $16.49 I was expecting an in-depth guide explaining how to make money from your blog. Instead, this book feels like a compilation of inspirational, non-descriptive blog posts with extremely general information, and comes off like an "I did it, now you can too!" seminar that leaves you without anything specific or the money you had in your pocket before you walked in.

The book breaks down like this:

1. Blogging for Money
2. Niche Blogging
3. Setting up your blog
4. Blog Writing
5. Blog Income and Earning Strategies
6. Buying and Selling Blogs
7. Blog Promotion and Marketing
8. Build a Sticky Blog Community
9. Social Media and Your Blog
10. Secrets of Successful Blogs
11. Creating Something Worthwhile
12. Taking Your Blog to the Next Level: A Case Study
13. Going Beyond Your Blog

You would think that this outline separates the book into useful sections, but the truth is almost all of the content of the first chapter is repeated in slightly more depth in the subsequent ones. A lot of the information feels like a blog rant that tries to hide general information within a wall of related words. I do not follow Darren Rowse or Chris Garrett, but given how much of this book was repetitive information, I feel like they probably took some of their blog posts and changed a few of the words to make this book. There is a lot of general "Do this, except for when you shouldn't" language, and while Chapters 5 and 6 had some information relevant to the title of the book, it was not very specific at all. The book would have been more useful if it were a few pages long and existed as a general list of resources you could use to make money blogging.

This book really does not have much "content", let alone applied content, but rather spouts the same information again and again while making common-sense statements to fill space. The book has a lot of "examples" of other blogs supposedly relating to the concepts being discussed, but most of the time it feels like the authors are advertising for these other blogs as they go off on personal tangents about the person or the blog. Chapter 10, Secrets of Successful Blogs, is the worst example of this, going over other successful blogs and quoting the same repetitive insights from the authors. It can honestly be summed up in one phrase: "Know your audience."

There are simple definitions and explanations in this book, but I can't honestly see anyone who grew up with the internet needing it listed and then repeated. The author is very clear that making money from blogging takes a lot of hard work, and I wish they told us more about that. That being said, one can easily see how the title is misleading: "Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income" implies, to me at least, a FOCUS on insights or techniques about how to make money blogging. I am sure that all of the information needed to blog successfully is "technically" there, but the authors never get that specific or tell you exactly how they applied this knowledge, sans one VERY general case study and references to the fact that they did it once. It feels like the textbook of a survey class in college that gives you all the definitions of a subject but no useful knowledge for applying it. I wish I had nicer things to say about this book, but I have to give it one star because I honestly feel like I have just been scammed. It is written for people who want to buy products to make themselves feel more productive, NOT people who are hard-working and serious about making money and want an in-depth technical guide. This book is more of a distraction than a guide. Instead of reading this, go out and start working on your website or blog. They say a fool and his money are soon parted. I am sad to say that today I am that fool.

"The third updated edition of Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology appears in full color and is a powerful 'must have' veterinary reference, representing a complete update to a reference on managing neurology cases in small animal practice." (Midwest Book Review 2016)

(Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association 15 June 2016)

The Practical Guide to Canine and Feline Neurology, though being a textbook with a target audience of veterinarians, is written using clear language and medical terminology that would make it a useful addition to any veterinary clinic library.

My Brief History (Deckle Edge) Hardcover, by Stephen Hawking

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Stephen Hawking has dazzled readers worldwide with a string of bestsellers exploring the mysteries of the universe. Now, for the first time, perhaps the most brilliant cosmologist of our age turns his gaze inward for a revealing look at his own life and intellectual evolution.

My Brief History recounts Stephen Hawking’s improbable journey, from his postwar London boyhood to his years of international acclaim and celebrity. Lavishly illustrated with rarely seen photographs, this concise, witty, and candid account introduces readers to a Hawking rarely glimpsed in previous books: the inquisitive schoolboy whose classmates nicknamed him Einstein; the jokester who once placed a bet with a colleague over the existence of a particular black hole; and the young husband and father struggling to gain a foothold in the world of physics and cosmology.

Writing with characteristic humility and humor, Hawking opens up about the challenges that confronted him following his diagnosis of ALS at age twenty-one. Tracing his development as a thinker, he explains how the prospect of an early death urged him onward through numerous intellectual breakthroughs, and talks about the genesis of his masterpiece A Brief History of Time—one of the iconic books of the twentieth century.

Clear-eyed, intimate, and wise, My Brief History opens a window for the rest of us into Hawking’s personal cosmos.

Review
"Stephen Hawking [has] a brain of enviable vastness, seeing and understanding things that lie way beyond most of us... His modesty is engaging" Daily Mail "Hawking writes movingly... we hear his voice radiating directly from the black hole of his motor neuron disease, without the amplification and elaboration supplied by the co-authors with whom he wrote his last few books" Financial Times "A concise, gleaming portrait" Nature "Powerful... [his] brevity makes for a bold picture" Guardian "Read it for the personal nuggets... But above all, it's worth reading for its message of hope" Mail on Sunday

Hawking / MY BRIEF HISTORY

1

Childhood

My father, Frank, came from a line of tenant farmers in Yorkshire, England. His grandfather—my great-grandfather John Hawking—had been a wealthy farmer, but he had bought too many farms and had gone bankrupt in the agricultural depression at the beginning of this century. His son Robert—my grandfather—tried to help his father but went bankrupt himself. Fortunately, Robert’s wife owned a house in Boroughbridge in which she ran a school, and this brought in a small amount of income. They thus managed to send their son to Oxford, where he studied medicine.

My father won a series of scholarships and prizes, which enabled him to send money back to his parents. He then went into research in tropical medicine, and in 1937 he traveled to East Africa as part of his research. When the war began, he made an overland journey across Africa and down the Congo River to get a ship back to England, where he volunteered for military service. He was told, however, that he was more valuable in medical research.

My mother was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, the third of eight children of a family doctor. The eldest was a girl with Down syndrome, who lived separately with a caregiver until she died at the age of thirteen. The family moved south to Devon when my mother was twelve. Like my father’s family, hers was not well off. Nevertheless, they too managed to send my mother to Oxford. After Oxford, she had various jobs, including that of inspector of taxes, which she did not like. She gave that up to become a secretary, which was how she met my father in the early years of the war.

I was born on January 8, 1942, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. I estimate, however, that about two hundred thousand other babies were also born that day. I don’t know whether any of them was later interested in astronomy.

I was born in Oxford, even though my parents were living in London. This was because during World War II, the Germans had an agreement that they would not bomb Oxford and Cambridge, in return for the British not bombing Heidelberg and Gttingen. It is a pity that this civilized sort of arrangement couldn’t have been extended to more cities.

We lived in Highgate, in north London. My sister Mary was born eighteen months after me, and I’m told I did not welcome her arrival. All through our childhood there was a certain tension between us, fed by the narrow difference in our ages. In our adult life, however, this tension has disappeared, as we have gone different ways. She became a doctor, which pleased my father.

My sister Philippa was born when I was nearly five and better able to understand what was happening. I can remember looking forward to her arrival so that there would be three of us to play games. She was a very intense and perceptive child, and I always respected her judgment and opinions. My brother, Edward, was adopted much later, when I was fourteen, so he hardly entered my childhood at all. He was very different from the other three children, being completely non-academic and non-intellectual, which was probably good for us. He was a rather difficult child, but one couldn’t help liking him. He died in 2004 from a cause that was never properly determined; the most likely explanation is that he was poisoned by fumes from the glue he was using for renovations in his flat.

My earliest memory is of standing in the nursery of Byron House School in Highgate and crying my head off. All around me, children were playing with what seemed like wonderful toys, and I wanted to join in. But I was only two and a half, this was the first time I had been left with people I didn’t know, and I was scared. I think my parents were rather surprised at my reaction, because I was their first child and they had been following child development textbooks that said that children ought to be ready to start making social relationships at two. But they took me away after that awful morning and didn’t send me back to Byron House for another year and a half.

At that time, during and just after the war, Highgate was an area in which a number of scientific and academic people lived. (In another country they would have been called intellectuals, but the English have never admitted to having any intellectuals.) All these parents sent their children to Byron House School, which was a very progressive school for those times.

I remember complaining to my parents that the school wasn’t teaching me anything. The educators at Byron House didn’t believe in what was then the accepted way of drilling things into you. Instead, you were supposed to learn to read without realizing you were being taught. In the end, I did learn to read, but not until the fairly late age of eight. My sister Philippa was taught to read by more conventional methods and could read by the age of four. But then, she was definitely brighter than me.

We lived in a tall, narrow Victorian house, which my parents had bought very cheaply during the war, when everyone thought London was going to be bombed flat. In fact, a V-2 rocket landed a few houses away from ours. I was away with my mother and sister at the time, but my father was in the house. Fortunately, he was not hurt, and the house was not badly damaged. But for years there was a large bomb site down the road, on which I used to play with my friend Howard, who lived three doors the other way. Howard was a revelation to me because his parents weren’t intellectuals like the parents of all the other children I knew. He went to the council school, not Byron House, and he knew about football and boxing, sports that my parents wouldn’t have dreamed of following.

Another early memory was getting my first train set. Toys were not manufactured during the war, at least not for the home market. But I had a passionate interest in model trains. My father tried making me a wooden train, but that didn’t satisfy me, as I wanted something that moved on its own. So he got a secondhand clockwork train, repaired it with a soldering iron, and gave it to me for Christmas when I was nearly three. That train didn’t work very well. But my father went to America just after the war, and when he came back on the Queen Mary he brought my mother some nylons, which were not obtainable in Britain at that time. He brought my sister Mary a doll that closed its eyes when you laid it down. And he brought me an American train, complete with a cowcatcher and a figure-eight track. I can still remember my excitement as I opened the box.

Clockwork trains, which you had to wind up, were all very well, but what I really wanted were electric trains. I used to spend hours watching a model railway club layout in Crouch End, near Highgate. I dreamed about electric trains. Finally, when both my parents were away somewhere, I took the opportunity to draw out of the Post Office bank all of the very modest amount of money that people had given me on special occasions such as my christening. I used the money to buy an electric train set, but frustratingly enough, it didn’t work very well either. I should have taken the set back and demanded that the shop or manufacturer replace it, but in those days the attitude was that it was a privilege to buy something, and it was just your bad luck if it turned out to be faulty. So I paid for the electric motor of the engine to be serviced, but it never worked very well, even then.

Later on, in my teens, I built model airplanes and boats. I was never very good with my hands, but I did this with my school friend John McClenahan, who was much better and whose father had a workshop in their house. My aim was always to build working models that I could control. I didn’t care what they looked like. I think it was the same drive that led me to invent a series of very complicated games with another school friend, Roger Ferneyhough. There was a manufacturing game, complete with factories in which units of different colors were made, roads and railways on which they were carried, and a stock market. There was a war game, played on a board of four thousand squares, and even a feudal game, in which each player was a whole dynasty, with a family tree. I think these games, as well as the trains, boats, and airplanes, came from an urge to know how systems worked and how to control them. Since I began my PhD, this need has been met by my research into cosmology. If you understand how the universe operates, you control it, in a way.

A history brief, simple and sweet
By Ash Jogalekar
Stephen Hawking is not only a great scientist but he is also an exemplar of grit, optimism and good humor. He is as famous for his triumph over a devastating disease and his determined survival as he is for his scientific brilliance. His book "A Brief History of Time" introduced millions of people to the wonders of the universe. This short memoir now introduces people to his own life which has not been any less wondrous. Those who have read the biographies by John Gribbin and Michael White or by Jane Hawking may not find much that is new in here, but the book definitely benefits from Hawking's simple and illuminating writing style and dry sense of humor. Suffering from an illness like ALS can definitely lead someone to express themselves with economy and clarity.

As the title indicates, the book is very short (144 pages) and is divided into even shorter chapters. Each chapter is more like a snippet that focuses on one particular topic. The earlier chapters deal with Hawking's upbringing in London as the son of caring and slightly eccentric parents, his education at Oxford and Cambridge and his initial struggles with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Hawking gives us a good idea of the pioneering research on black holes and the Big Bang which he did with Roger Penrose and others. There are also anecdotes about other scientists like Richard Feynman and encounters with celebrities like Popes and Presidents. Hawking talks unflinchingly about his disease without a hint of self-pity, and this is a quality that continues to make him so widely admired, sometimes to the point of reverence.

The later chapters deal with his current research on quantum gravity, his various trips to different parts of the world (including a few weeks spent every year at Caltech) and his two divorces. One revealing part of the book is Hawking's description of the several occasions on which he was on the brink of death; it was only the dedication of his wives, Jane and Elaine, that saved his life. Old and new photographs (some showcasing Hawking's bawdy sense of humor) enliven the narrative. The book ends on a characteristically optimistic note. Hawking says that his devastating illness has not held him back from fully living life and he is grateful for his gifts and for the support others have given him. There's some useful advice there for all of us.

My Brief History by Stephen Hawking is a fascinating jubilee of life, love & triumph over adversity
By Shannon
Told with the greatest humility, My Brief History by Stephen Hawking is a fascinating jubilee of life, love and triumph over adversity that gives its readers unprecedented access to the heart and mind of one of the most famous and loved living scientists.

The following is an excerpt of my book review published in association with Nature.com and Scientific American. The full review can be read online at [...]

The autobiography revealed a great deal about Hawking, the man. Most notably, it took Hawking out of a wheelchair and showed us a vibrant, active, and youthful man. The featured image on the cover of the book, titled "The Boat Club at play," is of Hawking leaping into the air holding a white kerchief. Similarly, we see Hawking, once again defying gravity much later in life, in the last photo of the book where he is floating in "Zero-G" aboard NASA's "Vomit Comet."

Hawking's autobiography genuinely burst to life with 47 archival images, including candid family portraits with his parents and his two sisters, Philippa and Mary, affirming a happy childhood. (A photo of his adopted brother, Edward, is absent). Some of the photos exposed colorful, non-centrist, and controversial aspects of the lives and political beliefs of his parents, Frank and Isobel. The photos of Stephen's first wife, Jane, whom he married in 1965, and their children -- from eldest to youngest: Robert, Lucy, and Tim -- unveiled tender, celebratory moments depicting nearly 25 years of a happy marriage and a joyful home life. The photos, however, masked brewing marital tensions that followed a life-threatening event related to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as "ALS" or "Lou Gehrig's disease." Hawking said his declining health led to his wife's affair. He laid bare the circumstances in more detail than expected on pages 84-88, explaining their eventual physical separation in 1990.

The narrative story revealed much about Hawking's early life and education. First, we learned that disability was not new to his family. His mother, who was Scottish and the daughter of a physician, had an older sister afflicted with Down's syndrome, a heritable disease. The experience probably imbued her with an understanding of the patience and dignity required in the process of care giving with the differently abled. While there are some instances in studies showing the heritability of ALS, the actual cause of the motor neural disease remains unknown. His father, who was academically and professionally trained in medicine, was aptly suited to raise a child who developed a medical condition. In short, Hawking could not have been born to a family that would be more capable to provide him with the love, empathy, dignity, and emotional support to pursue his dreams and become the scientist he is today.

As a fellow Cantabrigian, I found the chapters on Cambridge life to be quite relatable and I feel most alumni would enjoy reading the book for the same reason.

In addition to allowing the reader to learn about Hawking as a family man, the book conveyed some surprising stories about his professional studies and career as a cosmologist. Hawking also used his autobiography to correct some misconceptions. He revealed examples of how he felt certain incidences in his life, and his overall public image, had been distorted by the media.

The book no doubt serves as the basis of the recent movie, Hawking, released in the UK by Vertigo Films, September 2013.

A Very Brief History
By Rikki White
I was one of the millions who bought a copy of A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME and read it from cover to cover. It enthused me so much that I enrolled with The Open University and did three years study of AstroPhysics, so I am a hero worshipper of Stephen Hawking and anxious to learn as much as I can about this incredible man. Therefore, I am disappointed that I can only give two stars to this book. I have read several of his books and I was wanting to find out more about the man not his music. There is little new to enlighten the reader of his fortitude with the slings and arrows that life had shot at him. It was more a record of people and places he encountered. Wonderful that he could be so positive about the advantages his disability gave him but I feel I know no more about him than I did at the start of the book. The chapters on his work I found incomprehensible, but that's probably my fault not his. This is a book for admirers of the genius who have little knowledge of his history and want to know something about him. It could appeal to a wider audience than his more scientific offerings as only a small section needs a knowledge of theoretical physics to understand it. The title is apt, it is indeed a very brief history.
