Smoke and State

A team of misfits on an adventure makes a good basis for a story, and tribal cultures are always tasty. Let Larry Niven loose on them, though, and you get a novel that is nominated for a Nebula for Best Novel in 1984, and a Hugo ditto the following year.

Niven's tales often hang on an epic structure: the "Ringworld" Ringworld (A Del Rey book), for example. In this novel, a central star ("Voy") is too close to its gas-giant planet ("Gold"), and the atmosphere of Gold has been sucked off into a gas torus, a vast ring around the star. The thicker part of the torus is breathable—this is the Smoke Ring where humans can survive.

The humans that do live here have adapted to the conditions in the torus, where gravity is nonexistent, but tidal forces may be felt. Mostly, the tides affect dwellers at the "out" and "in" ends of any of the millions of integral trees. The length of these massive growths can almost span the smoke ring, and they were dubbed "integral" because the opposing winds at either end bend the tufts outward into an ∫ shape. These tufts collect smoke, dirt, animal life and insects from the wind; tufts and trunks impact free-floating water globules—"ponds"—and this provides moisture for the life on the tree.

When Quinn tribe's tree sinks too far in the smoke ring toward Voy, the tribe's leader—the "Chairman"—sends the tribe's least useful citizens to climb the tree to its free-fall zone at the trunk and farther "out" on a hunting trip, to find a way for the tribe to survive. Unfortunately, the tree has its own plans, and those plans don't take into account the humans living on the "in tuft".

The State is hinted at in flashbacks and founding documents, and in the opinions of 'Discipline,' the AI personality of the ship that brought humans to the smoke ring. 'Discipline' has carefully forgotten the mutiny that separated it from the humans, so it cannot be biased against the descendants of the mutineers, and it stays out of the gas torus to preserve the ship's physical integrity.

When the disaster at the Quinn tree brings 'Discipline' back into contact with the survivors, that contact brings humans under the eye of the State for the first time in hundreds of years. The Quinn survivors worry about being made "copsiks" (slaves) by another tribe or captured by the longer-limbed free-falling fluff-jungle dwellers; they should be more worried about Discipline's intentions.

If you haven't encountered "The Integral Trees" yet, it's time. The people of the Smoke Ring may be strangely shaped by their gravity-less environment, but their cultural adaptations prove they are all too human.

Niven has a peculiar propensity of contradicting himself (or, rather, the characters) on occasion, in word or deed, which makes for some unpleasant speed-bump moments for the more careful and thoughtful reader. Aside from that minor quibble, I've read this book probably on the order of twenty or so times, so that speaks for itself towards it being a good read.

About the Author
As an entertainment industry veteran, Aaron Powell has worked briefly in front of the camera and very successfully behind the scenes representing some of the biggest names in television, radio, music, books, and film. He started out as a dancer in old-school hip hop videos and in New York City clubs. He met a lot of aspiring actors at dance auditions and in the clubs and eventually got bit by the acting bug and began auditioning for everything, including a few Spike Lee movies. On an audition, he met a casting director who encouraged him to follow all his dreams but to have a back-up plan and suggested he look into the world of public relations. He followed her advice and eventually landed a internship at ARISTA Records, whose roster at the time included Whitney Houston, TLC, Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin and Carly Simon, to name a few. After ARISTA, Powell worked at one of the most prominent black-owned PR Firms in N.Y., where the owner took him under his wing and taught him the ins and outs of publicity. He worked for various radio and TV personalities and was an independent publicist for record labels like TOMMY BOY and ULTRA Records. He also did publicity for TV personality Wendy Williams (for her novel, Ritz Harper Goes to Hollywood ). Powell also worked as a publicist for the late groundbreaking author E. Lynn Harris (for his final mainstream novel, Mama Dearest).

A book that whispers, writhes and screams ....

Poet and spoken word artist Aaron Powell's debut release "Behind Concrete Doors" is a tiny book that hits like a kick in the nuts. Whispers, thoughts and screams from dark corners where sexuality is cloaked in subterfuge, where manly homies hump each other but dare never tell, where secret thoughts of men and boys are flayed and laid bare for the entire world to see.

Aaron Powell's little book is perfect tucked in those nooks where the reader can get a quick fix of the shockingly real world of Blatino life on the down low, with all its lust, deceit, poignancy and pain.

It is certainly a book designed to lustfully re-visit again and again. ~

Now I know what's Behind Door #1

JKing-Garcia (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) I've been waiting so long to get my copy of this book, and when I finally did I saw a few titles that caught my eye. Aaron spoke of things that we as a society only think about on a day to day basis. It's the truth but has a funny twist to it as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the gay life or even if you want to know what Aaron is thinking.(Smiles) Either way, I'm sure you will enjoy every line from start to finish.

An amazing read from start to finish makes you want more and more. This collection of short poems really spoke to me especially the poem "Mother, May I..." this has always been something that i've wanted to say to my own mother but I never had the balls to say it, this author has a wonderful way of captivating his audience and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us next.

Great handling of delicate subject matter

Karyn Mitchell had been date-raped and for the past several years she'd been struggling to put her life back together. Finally she convinces herself that local DJ, Christopher Faulkner, is the man who can solve her problems. After all, he offers sex advice nightly on the radio. Maybe if he'd just put a little of his advice into practice with her, all her problems would be solved. When she finally gets him to agree, it's with the understanding their affair will be short and sweet with no emotional involvement. Only that's easier said than done when Karyn finds herself falling for Dr. Desire. Chris has emotional baggage of his own which comes to a climax when he fails to keep the one promise he made to Karyn -- to keep her safe. I enjoyed this debut novel from Kira Sinclair and look forward to future books from her.

Kira Sinclair delivers a great story in her debut book--I like the unique hook and Sinclair explores a difficult subject with sensitivity (but without dragging down the overall tone of the book). Karyn and Chris are interesting, multi-faceted characters, and their chemistry sizzles.

She tackles a very difficult subject - date-rape - in a manner that few could, turning it into the triumphant story of a woman finally putting her past behind her and learning to love and trust again. Delightful and Inspiring Gratitude Journal for all ages

Buddha Doodles Gratitude Journal is a delightful and inspiring way to count your blessings. The artwork is true Molly Hahn style and helps one find ways to be grateful for the simple things in life. Appropriate for all ages, I can see young children and the young at heart using this journal with joy.

I have two so far and plan on purchasing more for friends in the near future. It really does help to take a few minutes each night to reflect on just 3 things you are grateful for. Imagine ending the day on a peaceful and positive note. And the artwork certainly helps if you need a little inspiration.

The journal itself is well constructed and well laid out. It does help to use a pencil or ballpoint pen instead of heavier ink type pens. Mine has bled through a bit so I took the advice of switching to my regular ballpoint.

Great for yourself or as a gift. I very highly recommend this journal.

Holy smokes what a ride.

Wow! Nicole can not churn these books out fast enough for me, holy smokes I love the Sci fi human triad or more interactions in other books, the Kindered and Kalqorians not by Nicole and please read those yummo. (hope I spelled that right) Now the Arathians, yowser. This book left me breathless, I was literally holding my breath at times, and turning blue towards the end I. did. not. see. that. coming. Brilliant just brilliant writing, imagination through the roof and I took flight right along with Lukas. Nicole keep this series coming! It will throw you to the top. Next book longer please I know I am greedy. Thank you for a splendind moment in a world you created.

A Nice Installment

I really did like the story. It's a cute continuation of an interesting story. However, I did feel like the first 40% of the book was a rehashing of the second book from a different pov. While I enjoyed the alternate take on a scene, I felt that the romance between the two heroes and the heroine felt really rushed since they really only interacted with each other for the second half of the book. All in all it's an enjoyable afternoon read

Loved It!!!

I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this book, and I was not disappointed! When I read the first book I really hoped the series would continue and after reading this book I still hope it will. This series has everything you want in a great sci fi erotic romance. The characters are lovable, the plot is great, the writing is wonderful and the sex scenes are incredibly HOT! I love how honest the characters mostly were with their feelings and attraction for each other. None of that " denying their love because they feel they don't deserve happiness " carp that is becoming increasingly common in books lately. It is an overall great read and I highly recommend this series !

Great book, important topic

It's my opinion that the Christian church has done a poor job of addressing sexuality. Lisa McMinn's book is a wonderful exception to that generality. She balances candor and compassion; is didactic but not judgmental. Her presentation is a good antidote for unhealthy views of sexuality that exist both inside and outside the Christian community.

Best book on Sexuality from a Christian perspective

It seems Christians treat sexuality as one of two extremes - to celebrate in marriage, or to ignore or repress in the unmarried. This book gives an excellent overview of how God created us male and female from birth, and that sexuality has a purpose - throughout life, not just in procreation. This book addresses sexuality as a longing for relationship - in every context of life. It addresses sexual development, singleness, marriage, childbearing, and our sex-driven culture. It was a refreshing read, well-researched, and well thought-out. I would definitely use this book when talking to young women (men also, but I mostly talk to women) about sexuality and sexual issues in today's world.
