One of the better romance anthologies

The last thing live-in lovers Cullen Roberts and Darcy Logan ever dreamed of was that they'd become instant parents. But that was what happened when Cullen gained custody of his young niece. Trouble was, while Cullen adored the child, Darcy hardened her heart. Would Darcy ever admit the secret pain that kept her from loving this little girl?

And my review:

Nora Roberts is a master storyteller, not doubt about it. Not many authors can make a good, believable romance in 100 pages, but she can. I just loved the little boy - he was a full character instead of a flat plot device, like children so often are in romance. And I liked watching Cooper's transition from standoffish man to father figure. Four stars.

Ann Major's story was the weak link in this book, in my opinion. She writes conflict between characters very well, but the romance always feels a bit lacking. I find that "I love you, but I'm too proud to tell you so I'm going to lose you rather than risk being vulnerable" attitude of the heroine was quite grating by the end. Okay for a one-time read, but not to re-read. Three stars.

Dallas Schulze's story was the reason I bought this book as she is one of my favorite authors. I was not dissapointed. This story was very good. The characters were well developed. And though I don't want to give anything away, Darcy had very valid reasons for holding herself at a distance from the baby. I loved watching Darcy being drawn to Annie (the baby) in spite of herself. I kept the book for this story. Five stars.

Though the middle novella was a bit of a let-down, there were no "stinkers" in this book, which is rare for an anthology. I recommend this one.

Great book!

This is an early collection of Nora Roberts books. I haven't found one I didn't like and I've read every single one still in print. I gave this set a 4 star rating as the stories are very short and move so quickly it just doesn't seem feasible to find true love that quickly but they were still fun reads.

According to Greek myth, Metis, Athena's mother, was Zeus's first wife. Zeus swallowed Metis to prevent her from bearing children who would overthrow him. Nevertheless, Metis bore Zeus a child-Athena-who sprang forth fully formed from his head. In Aeschylus's Oresteia, Athena's motherless status functions as a crucial justification for absolving Orestes of the crime of matricide. In his defense of Orestes, Zeus argues that the father is more important than the mother, using Athena's "motherless" birth as an example.

Conducting a close reading of critical works on Aeschylus's text, Jacobs reveals that psychoanalytic theorists have unwittingly reproduced the denial of Metis in their own critiques. This repression, which can be found in the work of Sigmund Freud and Melanie Klein as well as in the work of more contemporary theorists such as Andr� Green and Luce Irigaray, has resulted in both an incomplete analysis of Oresteia and an inability to account for the fantasies and unconscious processes that fall outside the oedipal/patricidal paradigm.

By bringing the story of Athena's mother, Metis, to the forefront, Jacobs challenges the primacy of the Oedipus myth in Western culture and psychoanalysis and introduces a bold new theory of matricide and maternal law. She finds that the Metis myth exists in cryptic forms within Aeschylus's text, uncovering what she terms the "latent content of the Oresteian myth," and argues that the occlusion of the law of the mother is proof of the patriarchal structures underlying our contemporary social and psychic realities. Jacobs's work not only provides new insight into the Oresteian trilogy but also advances a postpatriarchal model of the symbolic order that has strong ramifications for psychoanalysis, feminism, and theories of representation, as well as for clinical practice and epistemology.

About the Author

Susan K. Jacobson is a Distinguished Teaching Scholar and Professor in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. She teaches and conducts research on the human dimensions of natural resource management and environmental communication. She earned her Ph.D. degree in resource ecology from Duke University. She is the author of Communication Skills for Conservation Professionals, and has published well over a hundred journal articles about environmental management education and natural resource conservation in the U.S., Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. She has served on the Board of Governors of the Society for Conservation Biology and the North American Association for Environmental Education.

Mallory McDuff teaches environmental education at Warren Wilson College, a unique liberal arts school that combines academics with work and service. She is the author of Natural Saints: How People of Faith are Working to Protect the Earth (OUP, 2010) and Sacred Acts: How Churches are Working to Protect Earth's Climate (New Society Publishers, 2012). Her essays and op-eds have been featured in USA Today, Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, The Rumpus, and Sojourners. She earned her Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida.

Martha Monroe is an international leader in environmental education research and practice. Her research focuses on the motivations for engagement and assessment of outcomes of effective education programs. She has also conducted a number of evaluations of formal and non-formal environmental education programs, led professional development courses on program evaluation Education, and co-authored Evaluating Your Environmental Education Programs. She was recognized for her career achievements with the highest awards given by the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals and North American Association for Environmental Education and has mentored over 100 graduate students and authored over 100 book chapters and publications.

A must read

Don't do any Environmental Ed, public outreach or service learning projects without reading this book. It is wordy, but the organization of the book and its step-by-step approach are really helpful. I was required to get this for grad school, but I will always keep it as part of my professional library.

The surge of motivational titles flooding bookstore shelves amid the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression is evidence of our society's growing obsession with self-improvement. Recently two areas of growing interest have been positive organizational behavior and psychological capital. While books on these subjects have led to a new understanding of motivation, they have limited their focus to two ends of a continuum. On one side a plethora of empirical data supports the academic literature; at the other extreme is a tidal wave of self-help books, almost all of which lack academic rigor. The popular volumes ignore rich veins of research, while the academic books pay scant attention to bestseller lists. Both markets seem content with what they get. Scholars read their colleagues' books, while self-help gurus rehash the same old themes and programs. This book gives equal time to both sides. It pays heed to the extensive research and careful conclusions of academicians, then crosses into the realm of self-help and mass-market literature. The book's eight chapters blend topics that I have studied and taught over two decades in the classroom and practiced in motivational-leadership consulting. Improving Self-Motivation

Although this is a small book, it is powerful in that Dr. Provitera has capsulized for the reader important information available in the field of self-motivation. He provides 28 pages of Endnotes of other authors who have analyzed and summarized systems for personal success. This book would particularly benefit young adults, students of institutions of higher learning or those who have been in the work force for several years and desire to improve their occupational or vocational status. In addition, Dr. Provitera provides a workbook at no extra charge to go with his manual, which he believes will help the reader understand his concepts more fully. He also invites readers to contact him regarding three questions he poses at the end of Chapter Eight. Perusing his website [....] provides more fully his background and most of the media tools available for self-promotion.

This reviewer heard CEOs speak the other day on Book Events and with such a lack of jobs available for new and even old employees, the main asset they look for in new employees, and especially degreed ones, is the ability to jump beyond the job requirements and improve it based on their own initiative. In other words, how can an employee make the job more efficient in the same amount of hours for the same cost? This manual helps an employee understand how to meet such standards. I recommend this book especially for individuals who are seeking new insights in the areas that are covered.
