About the Author
Author of more than a dozen books of poetry and two of literary criticism, Susan Howe's recent collection of poems That This, published by New Directions won the Bollingen Prize in 2011. Her earlier critical study, My Emily Dickinson, was re-issued in 2007 with an introduction by Eliot Weinberger. Three CDs in collaboration with the musician/composer David Grubbs, Thiefth,�Souls of the Labadie Tract, and Frolic Architecture�were released on the Blue Chopsticks label (2005; 2011). Howe held the Samuel P. Capen Chair in Poetry and the Humanities at the State University New York at Buffalo until her retirement in 2007. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999 and served as a Chancellor to the Academy of American Poets between 2000-2006. In fall, 2009 she was awarded a Fellowship to the American Academy at Berlin. Grenfell Press published a fine press edition of “Frolic Architecture with photographic prints by James Welling in 2009. Recently she was an Artist In Residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. In October, 2013 her word collages were exhibited at the Yale Union in Portland, Oregon, and in the Whitney Biennial Spring, 2014. A limited press edition of Tom Tit Tot (the word collages which amount to a series poem) with art work by R.H. Quaytman has just been published by MoMA in New York, and Spontaneous Particulars:The Telepathy of Archives, (2014) published by Christine Burgin and New Directions.

He surveys and assesses a wide range of rival assumptions about the nature of intentions and the status of intentionalist psychology. With detailed reference to examples from diverse media, art forms, and traditions, he demonstrates that insights into the multiple functions of intentions have important implications for our understanding of artistic creation and authorship, the ontology of art, conceptions of texts, works, and versions, basic issues pertaining to the nature of fiction and fictional truth, and the theory of art interpretation and appreciation.

Livingston argues that neither the inspirationist nor rationalistic conceptions can capture the blending of deliberate and intentional, spontaneous and unintentional processes in the creation of art. Texts, works, and artistic structures and performances cannot be adequately individuated in the absence of a recognition of the relevant makers intentions. The distinction between complete and incomplete works receives an action-theoretic analysis that makes possible an elucidation of several different senses of "fragment" in critical discourse. Livingston develops an account of authorship, contending that the recognition of intentions is in fact crucial to our understanding of diverse forms of collective art-making. An artist's short-term intentions and long-term plans and policies interact in complex ways in the emergence of an artistic oeuvre, and our uptake of such attitudes makes an important difference to our appreciation of the relations between items belonging to a single life-work.

The intentionalism Livingston advocates is, however, a partial one, and accomodates a number of important anti-intentionalist contentions. Intentions are fallible, and works of art, like other artefacts, can be put to a bewildering diversity of uses. Yet some important aspects of art s meaning and value are linked to the artist s aims and activities.

About the Author
Paisley Livingston has a B.A. in Philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University. He is Chair Professor of Philosophy and Dean of Humanities at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. He has held teaching and research positions at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, McGill University, l'Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), Siegen University, The University of Aarhus, Roskilde University Center, The University of Copenhagen, and Zinbin (Kyoto). His books are Ingmar Bergman and the Rituals of Art (Cornell), Literary Knowledge (Cornell) Literature and Rationality (Cambridge), Models of Desire (Johns Hopkins). Excellent book for Clinical Pathology

I had the previous edition of this book (Quick Compendium) and found this to be quite the upgrade. The addition of pictures and highlighted text makes this book more user-friendly than its predecessor. I am impressed with the amount of information that is presented in a concise format. The material is very up to date but also includes the more outdated techniques that are frequently asked on board exams. Overall, I think its an excellent source for CP throughout residency, not just board review, and highly recommend it to to all pathology residents. Attendings that don't practice CP on a daily basis and would like to update their knowledge in the various CP fields would also find this book useful.

Disappointed

I ordered this thinking that I would be getting new information. I already have the Quick Compendium by the same author which I like. When I looked up a topic and compared it to the compendium, the information was copied almost word for word. I checked another topic--same conclusion. I like to make notes and add additional information in the margins of books that I use for review; this is not possible in this book because the pages are almost completely full of text with small margins. For the cost, this purchase was not worth the money, given that I already have the compendium. The pictures are not enough for me to justify the additional cost. If you don't have the compendium, this might be the preferred book for you.
Pros: some of the chapter's pictures are nice
Cons: same information as compendium, only in paragraph form rather than outline. No room in margins for notes.

i wish i would have bought this sooner

If you are looking at the clinical compendium, I would recommend this book first. It is the same information but in paragraph form, so easier to digest for a first time read through. There are errors in the book (most common cause of transfusion related mortality is still TRALI), but honestly I haven't found a review book that doesn't have them. Has been a great resource while studying for my boards, I wish I would have bought it sooner.

Stephen King - Best story teller ever!

I read this book a while back and decided to purchase it. Stephen King really shines in this book as one of the greatest story tellers ever. It has your classic castle, a rotten king, a noble hero to save the land, a bit of romance (not too much - he strayed away from that boring dribble, thank God!), and oh yes, a touch of magic by an evil sorcerer. This could be made into movie for young adults. Very entertaining. Different genre here for King though, so do not expect any ghostly thriller aspects. Hard to put down.

Classic Stephen King Fantasy for most ages!.

Read this when I was a kid bought it for my 11 year old daughter who loved it as much as I did. Plus she wants to read more! Minus she wants to read more Stephen King, and I'm not sure how ready she is for a greater portion of his work :-(

Still an excellent piece of work from a great writer that proves he can write fantasy with the best of them. I would reccomend it for ages 8 and up provided you read it with them, 11 and up otherwise.

An amazing novel

The Eyes of the Dragon is an exciting novel. I like the voice Stephen King tells it in also. This is the only one of his books I've read where there is an all knowing narrator. That said, I like this book even more because it deals with one of the characters in the Dark Tower Series, Flagg. This novel reveals many facts about Flagg. That he is a demon, that he likes to see the destruction of kingdoms and order. It also makes him appear strangely mortal. He is a demon that has lived seemingly forever, yet he is often scared of what humans can accomplish.
This novel is about a peaceful kingdom, during the reign of a less intelligent man. By chance, his first son turns out to be of amazing quality, while his second son seems exactly like himself. For Flagg to bring about the ruin of Delain he must make the second son, Thomas, King instead of the first son, Peter. If he could accomplish that feat, the kingdom of Delain would be on the brink of crumbling in four years, after standing for thousands.
I recommend this book to anyone, but especially to fans of the Dark Tower.
