McKinley brings to the Robin Hood legend a robustly romantic view. She renders it anew by fully developing the background and motive of each member of the merry band, from Robin's "crime" that sends him into the woods, to Marian's subterfuge as she straddles the worlds of the nobility and of the outlaws. Their habitations, foresting and thieving is explained, and McKinley, in a thoughtful afterword, reveals both her debt to and her differences with previous versions of the story. There is no reason, however, that readers of those stories might not enjoy this one as well. Although the author does fall into the politics indigenous only to the British isles, she presents a solid piece of tale-weaving, ingenious and ingenuous, causing readers to suspend belief willingly for a rousing good time. Ages 12-up.

Grade 9-12 Robin Hood is immortal, but in The Outlaws of Sherwood he doesn't quite come alive. McKinley's novelistic treatment expands the outlines of characters and episodes familiar to readers of Pyle. All is well in the Greenwood until the outlaws open their mouths: their speech and thoughts are a stiff, uneasy mix of ye-olde high seriousness and flip vernacular. McKinley's attempts to evoke the 12th-Century conflict with her wish to raise her characters' political and feminist consciousness do not work. The book moves slowly: there is action, but not enough for the sword-and-sorcery genre addicts; the romance between Robin and Marion hangs fire while he figures out that he can't tell her what to do; the dialogues are sometimes unwieldy and un-yeomanlike; the whole is unconvincing. Pyle's text may be stilted, but there are his wonderful pictures; even Roger Green's version (Penguin, 1984), albeit for a younger audience, has the merit of good pacing. Probably the best re-telling of Robin Hood that I've found!

I've always loved the story of Robin Hood, and Robin McKinley was reccommended to me as an author I would like. So when I found her books in the library, I had to take "The Outlaws of Sherwood". This book lived up to it's expectations, and more! I liked the interesting twist how Robin wasn't the unusual more-than-human hero. He wasn't the overconfident, always-merry man that is so often portrayed. He couldn't even shoot that well! I liked the way all the characters where so human, and yet most (the outlaws anyway) were very likable. It was cool how Marian was actually the great archer, and that there was other women in the outlaws. (Sibyl, Eva, etc.) Will and Much provided some humor, and an arrogance that was actually likable, which is rare. Little John was the perfect large-yet-quiet faithful companion. King Richard was intriguing; I couldn't figure out if I liked him or not.
It was also interesting how during different times, the viewpoint switched around to many people. Of course it was still Robin's view through most of it, but frequently Friar Tuck too, and then towards the end it was often Cecil. (Which is interesting because you wouldn't have thought that character to be a main one) This book has everything; a familiar-yet-new story, adventure, romance, humor, good characters, evil villians, battles, great setting, (I love medieval times!) etc. I encourage anyone to read this!!

Robin Hood: the Possibility of Reality...

Robin McKinley is, perhaps, one of the best writers I have ever read, especially her books Outlaws of Sherwood and Beauty. In Outlaws of Sherwood, McKinley uses her clear and descriptive style to add a little reality to the Robin Hood legends. Instead of showing her readers a Robin who looks debonair and dashing while joking with his merry men, McKinley gives us a Robin who lives in the forest, is poor, sometimes afraid, and not constantly merry. This Robin even has trouble shooting a straight arrow! He is faulty, yet he is likable and compelling because the reader may see him/herself in his life and his decisions. The other characters in the book are also convincing, showing us a suprisingly different view of our Lady Marian along with a wonderful portrayel of Friar Tuck. McKinley uses the reality factor of life to spin a tale in which people really might have lived, yet she still captures all the fantastic elements of the Medieval times and pagentry, along with the humor, that the original legend possesses. Perhaps one of the best scenes in the entire novel is toward the end, when Guy of Gisbourne attacks the theives outside of Friar Tucks little church and hovel. The excitement of battle is mixed with such a concern for the characters that the reader really feels present among them, dodging blows from swords and the feathered shafts of arrows!

This was the first Mckinley Book that i had the good fortune to read. I was in the middle of a Robin Hood streek when i picked this up. I am very glad i read so many diffrent versions before Outlaws because Mckinley's book raised my expectations for old tales of heroism to olympic levels. Besides Marion being so cool without overcrowding Robin the main reason i liked this book is its multitude of characters with depth. Robin has a group of people surrounding him that you actually care if they are merry or not. His band are not mere cutouts of stock medevil charcters-friar peasent nobleman. Mckinley is able to tell a broad story without losing the focus of the tale that made robin famous. You will not want this story to end.

Required reading!

This book should be required reading for every executive of every major company. The average lifespan of a company in the S&P 500 today is about 12 years - primarily due to disruptive change that we see in virtually every industry. To survive and thrive, companies need to learn how to be ambidextrous - that is, not only to be able to exploit their current products, but also able to explore and develop new products. The vast majority of companies fail at being ambidextrous. In this book, Charles O' Reilly and Michael Tushman provide an essential guide to explaining why companies fail, and what it takes to achieve ambidexterity and solve the innovator's dilemma.

This books gives a concise overview of the law of armed conflict as taught and trained in many western militaries. It traces the rationale of the law of armed conflict in holistic manner under the auspices of Just War. The author gives special attention to the concepts of jus ad bellum (right to war) and jus in bellum (right in war). He goes on to give the foundation of where these ideas came from in Western thought from Plato to the Geneva Convention. He goes on to explain how these concepts apply in modern war against non-state actors and terrorists, the use of nuclear weapons as well as well an officer's role in persecuting just war and the role of the United Nations. The intended audience is military students and people involved in defense policy; particularly in the American view. If you want a more in depth study of these concepts, read the primary sources he lists or find a different book.

This is a simple, and simplistic, attempt to review the nature of war as regarded by philosophers and ethicists. It may be that it was written so that the author might offer his students, in an ancient and ignoble practice, an intellectually slim volume as the text for a course. If you need something to lead you to primary sources, this might do. If you want an original take on this subject, or even the hint of perspicacious commentary, look elsewhere.

Glaciers in America’s far northwest figure prominently in indigenous oral traditions, early travelers’ journals, and the work of geophysical scientists. By following such stories across three centuries, this book explores local knowledge, colonial encounters, and environmental change.

Do Glaciers Listen? examines conflicting depictions of glaciers to show how natural and social histories are entangled. During late stages of the Little Ice Age, significant geophysical changes coincided with dramatic social upheaval in the Saint Elias Mountains. European visitors brought conceptions of Nature as sublime, as spiritual, or as a resource for human progress. They saw glaciers as inanimate, subject to empirical investigation and measurement. Aboriginal responses were strikingly different. From their perspectives, glaciers were sentient, animate, and quick to respond to human behaviour. In each case, experiences and ideas surrounding glaciers were incorporated into interpretations of social relations.

Focusing on these contrasting views, Julie Cruikshank demonstrates how local knowledge is produced, rather than “discovered,” through such encounters, and how oral histories conjoin social and biophysical processes. She traces how divergent views continue to weave through contemporary debates about protected areas, parks and the new World Heritage site that encompasses the area where Alaska, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory now meet. The book, “Do Glaciers Listen? Local Knowledge, Colonial Encounters & Social Imagination,” demonstrates that local knowledge and scientific knowledge differ not in their empirical outcomes, but rather, in their respective ontological and epistemological underpinnings; which, however, can strongly influence the type of spatialities that would be produced in a given place. This picture is seen in all places that have undergone European imperialism, as the social, cultural, and geophysical landscapes of these places are altered to fit those of European worldviews. Drawing on climate histories, colonial records, and Aboriginal oral histories, Cruikshank makes this picture more apparent as she examines the relationship between glaciers and the Indigenous people of northwestern North America during the little Ice Age, and how this relationship is subsequently impacted by Western contact. In a nutshell, the book examines how the view of nature, society and culture as unavoidably entwined is contested, and a view of these components as disaggregates gradually takes center stage in Northwestern North America.
The ontology of the Indigenous people of northwestern North America, particularly, Tlingit people on the Gulf of Alaska Coast and the interior Athapaskans, is that nature and society are inseparable. Hence, the native people view nature, in this case, glaciers, as sentient beings with as much agency as their human counterparts. There is mutual respect between glaciers and humans, as glaciers can respond to insolent behavior – making obscene remarks about glaciers, insulting elderly people, calling glaciers and cooking greasy food around glaciers – leading to dire consequence, such as their deluge on entire settlements.
Knowledge – about the behavior of glaciers – is acquired and transmitted through stories passed down from one generation to the other. These stories about glaciers, however, are given in the context of the daily material practices of humans; hence, glaciers are a determinant of the material and imaginative outcomes of the society. Humans are able to navigate their daily lives through knowledge of the behavior of glaciers, and knowledge of the glaciers is acquired through a navigation of their daily lives and transmitted through oral narratives. Local knowledge, therefore, is not static or discovered, but it is produced and reproduced through a dynamic process of nature/society interaction.
On the other hand, the book reveals that European explorers, who later made contact with the glaciated lands of northwestern North America, viewed the area as “discovered” and external to human society. They did not only see clear lines between humans and the glaciers, but also, they (explorers) and the indigenous people. For instance, the French exploration leader, Jean-Francois de La Perouse, viewed the glaciers of Lituya Bay in 1786 with awe, yet he was ready with instruments to ascertain their dimensions and characteristics. The American environmentalist, Muir, introduced a definition of nature as something to be protected and preserve without regard for the already existing human population that drew its livelihood from the environment.
This dualistic ontology and the epistemological hegemony of science – dismissal of oral narratives as myths, as they do not fit into the jigsaw puzzle of science – formed the base of European imperialism. The British writer and traveller, Edward Glave, who wanted to return to the Belgian Congo, needed to prove to his targeted employer that he had the requisite skill to work in his colony; hence, he changed his previous tolerance of native views of the environment during his second visit to northwestern North American. The consequence of this emergent ontology – nature/society dualism – and epistemology – science – in northwestern North America was its annexation, demarcation, and sharing, albeit protracted disputes, which did not involve the original inhabitants; as the area was viewed, by its invaders, as though it was an uninhabited space. Much of this area now stand as protected lands, national parks, and the UNESCO World Heritage site. Traces of this dualism are found in contemporary issues of environmental governance, biodiversity and climate change globally.
Nonetheless, Cruikshank makes the point that many scientific disciplines are beginning to acknowledge the importance of local knowledge in knowledge production and the interconnectedness of nature and society. A juxtaposition of oral narratives of three women who lived the Saint Elias Mountains area – present day Yukon Territory – and oral histories left by early explorers demonstrates no significant differences in their stories about glaciers, except for the fact that the Native women encased their stories about the natural landscape in their social life.
In my opinion, this book will be useful to students of interdisciplinary programs as it demonstrates that there are diverse ontologies and epistemologies, which may not necessarily be in conflict with each other, but can be complementary in the process of knowledge production. Also, lessons from this book can be useful to environmental policy. In an era when the looming problem of climate change may require the cooperation of all sovereign states of the world, lessons from this book can engender tolerance and cooperation among nations. Academically, this book can serve as a key text in the study of the theoretical and methodological approaches in social science research, while the imperial content can be useful to students studying the Aboriginal communities and histories of northwestern North America.

History and native memory, take your choice

This book was one of several recommended by a lecturer when we were cruising in Alaska waters. It is interesting in a way but I had mixed feelings. There is some interesting history related which is much of what I was looking for in the book. What makes the book stand out is the relationship the writer developed with elderly natives. She directly heard some stories and picked up some cultural understanding of the relationship the native people had with the glaciers. Obviously thy treated them as sentient and attributed sudden glacial movements to such things as frying met nearby or taunting a glacier. While interesting to read about, it left me with a strange feeling. Reading the bibliography I found a book I had read and it led me to another that I have read since. If cultural background, particularly legends, interest you this book offers that. The history interested me most and that part of the book was worthwhile.

Focal Point Both Asks the Right Questions, and Provides Valuable Answers

In the first two pages of Focal Point, Brian Tracy tells an anecdote so powerful and real, readers could stop right there and still receive tremendous value. He walks the walk by making the focal point of his book crystal clear. But it's just as well he wrote the following 222 pages, as he provides so many ways to translate the core concept into everyday practices.

He applies the "Focal Point Process" to financial, spiritual, community, and personal objectives. Chapters include "Improve Your Family and Personal Life", "Enjoy Superb Health and Fitness", "Make a Difference in Your Community" and Spiritual Development and Inner Peace".

The ideas may not be novel, but the combination is robust, and the touchstones are useful in shifting to a more positive and effective mindset. For example, the "1,000 Percent Formula" offers the approach of achieving great change incrementally. The "Law of Increasing Returns" states that the more you focus time on activities that bring the most value, the better and more efficient you get at doing them, so your returns on effort and energy increase. "Zero-based thinking" means asking yourself, "`Is there anything I am doing right now that, knowing what I now know, I wouldn't get into again if I were starting over today....If your answer is `yes', then your next question is, `How do I get out of this situation, and how fast?'"

Focal Point consolidates time management and prioritization guidelines useful in life and business. Collectively, the perspectives and questions both challenge current thought patterns (which may not be so productive) and suggest new ones (which are productive). you will love this one

If you haven't read a lot of books from Brian, you will love this one. I've been reading his books for many years and there wasn't a lot of new stuff. However, Brian Tracy's wisdom is timeless so it was a great refresher to hear his positive words and thoughts and I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who hasn't consumed his other work.

Foundational Learning for a Personal Development Journey

I found "Focal Point" by Brian Tracy very down to earth in its presentation of ideas, technology for improvement, goal setting, life's planning, Vision and Purpose development. Well worth the read and time invested. Use a good hi-lighter and take notes.

This is a fast read of 201 pages consisting of 12 well designed chapters, a very well developed Appendix and Index in the back. I will admit much of the information is pretty basic as compared to the advancements in personal development and self-improvement technologies since the initial publication of this book in 2002.

I did appreciate his methods for self discovery, simplification methods to life's challenges, and probing, thought provoking self-examination questions. Gives one a new perspective on their current, past, and future situations. Again, the primary point of this book is we each have the ultimate power to determine the success and failure in our lives. The only way outside forces change our circumstance is if we give them permission to have such power over us.

For one on a continuous journey of personal development, I recommend this book for your personal libraries as it adds value to your foundation and frame of reference.
